Ars is generally a good site, but surely that's just speculation at this point.

Nexus 7 is cheaper, with a better screen, more ram, quad core. The mini will sell on it's name alone.

Even then it makes sense because retina graphics don't have to load so the RAM footprint should be smaller.

Good point.

I'm not enjoying my N7 (the screen ratio in particular) and am seriously considering a iPad mini but find it hard to go back in specs (ram, display resolution, etc.).

Is it just me or does the iPad mini seem to have the internals of the iPad 2 (except for the camera)?:(

I know what you mean. I think the next model in 2013 will make the retina jump and likely have to bump that RAM to a gig.

will not buy if it has the same ram as ipad2. don't want to go back to checkerboarding and only a few tabs in safari.

Apple

They must have stockpiled 512 ram chips. Even budget devices and knockoff tabs from china have the same amount.

Any RAM specs are purely speculation at this point, until an actual tear-down is done.

I have an iPad 2 and I never have an issue with RAM.

Would be funny if it indeed has 512mb AND can run Siri. What excuse will Apple have for not letting iPad 2 owners have Siri?

Why are people surprised by this? The iPad Mini is essentially an iPad 2 in a 8' form factor. Of course it's only going to have 512mb RAM.

Along with a smaller screen, cheaper build quality, and non-existent tablet apps. The Nexus will sell solely based on it's price.

We won't know until ifixit do a teardown.

512mb will be a the difference between me keeping my iPad 3 or selling it and buying a mini.

I can live with non-retina ( i prefer smaller form factor ) but I can't live with re-loading of webpages and other issues when multitasking due to lack of ram.

I suspect however it probably does have 512mb :(

I saw that as well, but for the iPad, or iPhone where you really don't do true multitasking how important is 1gig of ram vs. 512meg? I'm not making excuses for apple if this is true, I really don't understand the implication in that we generally only use a single app at a time

Normally i think that people who start these sorts of threads are just moaning for the sake of moaning, but TBH safari refreshing itself EVERYTIME you pop in to check your email is totally irritating.
