It's unlikely. As mentioned by someone else, the A5 processor has RAM built into the chip itself. Apple would have to have an entirely seperate manufacturing process to make chips with 1gb of RAM in.

I can't see any reason at all why it would make sense for them to do that when essentially most users who don't visit macrumors wouldn't know or care whether it had 512mb or 1gb of RAM.

balls. Really wish they'd just put the bloody A6 in here and be done with it....

Ahh, 512Mb it is then.
Oh well we shall see how well it runs in real life soon enough.

Nexus 7 is cheaper, with a better screen, more ram, quad core. The mini will sell on it's name alone.
Amount of RAM is unknown. A5 clockspeed is uknown. Screen is unknown (according to the first hands-on, the iPad mini's display is better than the iPad 2's display in several areas (even though it's "only 1024 x 768")).

It's very well possible that the iPad mini turns out to have a better display.

Ya but you have to deal with that garbage OS and no quality tab apps.
Garbage OS?! No tab apps?! Have you even used a Nexus 7 for any length of time? I'm a big Apple fan... but if i didn't have a 3rd gen iPad and was contemplating the mini, i'd certainly check out the Nexus 7. The build is great... not Apple luxury item great... but solid. And there are plenty of good tablet apps in Play.

I saw that as well, but for the iPad, or iPhone where you really don't do true multitasking how important is 1gig of ram vs. 512meg? I'm not making excuses for apple if this is true, I really don't understand the implication in that we generally only use a single app at a time
In my experience, 512MB of ram causes Safari to constantly reload pages while browsing multiple tabs. That is not a good internet browsing experience for me, and this unnecessary problem can be easily fixed with a cheap memory bump to 1GB. I hope that this is just a rumor.

I see it as the opposite, to me it seems that there are more people hating Apple then google here.

I had to join the site just to post. I have been a member of another iForum since 2007, it was called everythingiphone back then(no longer this). That site has been invaded, so it's annoying too. I don't understand why Samsung people feel a need to waste their time on iSites? I understand why the designers of Samsung and other companies would waste their time on here to copy, but do the droid forums suck as much as the phones do or something? Shut up, Apple tells us whats the best thing right now, and if we don't believe them, then we can go elsewhere.

Although, these are people with interests in Apple products, so maybe I shouldn't steer them away? IDK

How many points do I get?:apple:

Yes i've used the N7 and I didn't like it at all. I find the droid OS's to be TERRIBLE on all devices (tab/smartphone). I'm good with the hardware on the majority of the droid devices but the OS and ecosystem is just terrible. That's just me opinion. I did here good things about the Surface though, hopefully I can get my hands on one through work and play with it.

I still don't buy the 512MB RAM guesses, the mini can record and play 1080p HD video.

Unless there is some sort of magic dust sprinkled in there, I just don't see 512MB having the power for that.

Welcome to your membership here, I've been a member for years, mostly just observe, but have noticed over the years the infiltration of trolls who have nothing better to do in life than join fan forums in order to quash people's happiness and joy, just to "prove their superiority." I don't believe we shouldn't challenge each other and Apple, but there are members here (I've chided one such member twice in the past day for trolling behaviour) who have nothing positive to say about Apple or people who like Apple products. I don't understand someone whose life is so empty they feel the need to visit forums like this simply so they can attack person and product - it boggles the mind.

I just wonder how many people don't ever join in any of the discussions because of all the jerks ready to pounce and attack, or the visitors who come here and see the arguments and fights and simply leave and never return. I've never visited Android forums so I've no idea whether Apple fans go there and do the same - I would certainly hope not, but I fear people are the same all over and it has nothing to do with platform affiliation?

I have no problems with 512 on my iPad 2

512 is going to force the browser to constantly reload pages. It's a joke of a product at 329 dollars. Apple should be ashamed, but we all know they wont be.

I'm not the smartest person in the world but I don't think I am stupid. I use chrome and don't have any problems. I don't have a ton of tabs open so that might be why I don't notice it. I do have it jailbroken and it rarely gets super low on available RAM.

Even then it makes sense because retina graphics don't have to load so the RAM footprint should be smaller.

I believe what makes a screen "Retina" is the pixel density, not the resolution, which I believe you're confusing here.

For example, people complain that the iPad 3 isn't as smooth as the 2 because of the "retina graphics," when in actuality, it's the doubled resolution on the 3 that requires more processing power (which is separate from PPI). And on that note, I would argue that it's more the GPU's fault than it is the CPU's or RAM's.

People are sort of forgetting the point anyway. It's pretty much a fact that webpages have to frequently reload when using any iProduct with 512MB of RAM or less. It's annoying. Apple really should've thrown in a 1GB chip with the Mini; if nothing else, then to at least provide a certain degree of "future-proofing."

What was the original slogan for the iPad? Something about "the best way to browse the web"?

I'm not an Apple hater. I love my 4S, I've been having wet dreams about the 5, and my wife has an iPad 3 which I use all the time (and also love). I just think this was a crappy move on Apple's part, putting their leftovers in different packaging and calling it "new."

And what's with the people hating on the Nexus 7? That's a sweet little device. Frankly, I think Google Now is awesome...some definite potential there. Now that I'm completely underwhelmed by the Mini, I'll most likely be picking one up.

The battery power is significant lower. the RAM increase has significant implications for Power requirements from the processor.

I don't think its a money thing, I think its too produce a slim and light device.

After using my iPhone 5 and an iPad 3, I could not go back to half a gig. Everything on my iPhone 5 is always loaded and its so nice not having to reload webpages all the time.

Since when did specs make the device? Apple's products have a focus on beauty and usability. They don't sell because they have the fastest processors or oodles of useless features. They sell because the things that people use them for can be done well. So if you want some Android tablet with more RAM or some ridiculously useless features, by all means go and chase the 1 GB and a quad-core Tegra processor to run your phone apps and long list of unusable crap.

Getting back to the iPad mini here, the purpose of it is to fill a market for people who wish to use an iPad with one hand. It's meant to be light and smaller, yet functional and useable. It's ideal for reading, browsing and email. If you want to use Photoshop get a Mac or a PC. Don't cry about 512MB of RAM when it's more than is needed for a device of this nature. Do you drive an F1 car with 1000hp 5 minutes down the street to the grocery store? No, because it's not needed, the same way 1GB of RAM in an iPad mini isn't needed.

In short: Don't worry about the MB, MHz, GHz, etc. The specs cannot tell you anything about the experience of using a product. They may give you a preliminary indication, but to really know just use it.

What strikes me as odd is that the smaller the screen size, the closer the reading distance is and hence, the greater that the resolution (density) should be ! Apple has taken the opposite approach. Beats me why Apple did that other than they can probably convince customers that a Goat is a Cow

Since Apple decided that the lifespan of iOS devices will be dictated on them. I can easily see the day in a couple of years when iOS 8 comes out and the minimum spec is 1GB of RAM. Furthermore, lack of RAM has been the number one reason Safari has crashed on my iPad 1 (256MB). I can easily see it happening on the mini if enough tabs and apps are open.

Don't buy into specs don't make a difference.

256MB RAM on iPad 1 vs 1GB on iPad 3 is a huge difference.

same with an A4 chip on an iPhone 4 vs a 1.3GHz A6 chip on the iPhone 5

This is the problem with the "spec wars" that go on in geeky crowds (and usually the non-apple ones)... the way something runs comes down to a whole lot more than just raw specs. I've been saying it for years.

Geez, just recently my sister-in-law wanted me to help her order an iPhone from Apple (don't know why she couldn't do it herself -LOL). She handed me her 1-year old Dell Laptop. What a heap of ***** that thing was. It wasn't loading pages, it was taking forever, all kind of stupid anti-virus crap was popping up... it was a dog. I felt like I was back in the 90s. I told her "go get me your iPad" (she has the iPad 2) and we had the phone ordered and paid for in less than 5 minutes.

In every way possible, spec wise, the laptop should have been better. But in this situation it wasn't. In specs, maybe the Android should be better, but often it's not. The iPad 3 has 1gb of ram, but I've heard it said often that it's not always faster than the 2. STOP WITH THE SPEC WARS. This isn't 2002 and we aren't comparing Alienware Gaming CPUs.

I expect 512mb for the Mini is going to be fine for 99% of us.

You're missing part of the argument. It's not that the Mini will be an unusable piece of crap. It's that if current-gen Apple devices are running A6 chips with 1GB of RAM, then so should the Mini. The only thing "mini" about it should be the screen.
