Red Herring

Apple did this on purpose. ;) Frankly I'm glad there are cases ready to go when I buy a new Apple product. I usually just buy the cheapest on I can get, and then add a better case after a manufacturer has a real one to build on.

Honestly, are people interested in an iPad mini?

I've got an iPhone 5 and an 3rd gen iPad... How does Apple intend to position this product to a consumer like me?

(legit question is legit)

Its a potential product that would compete in the lower tablet market, for people who either don't want to buy/can't afford the regular iPad or don't want something that big. If it is eventually released, the iPad Mini will not be a product marketed towards you or people in similar situations.

Consumers will likely eat it up if it's lower priced than an iPad but the big market is going to be industrial.
Industry spends BIG bucks on rugged protable devices and there is a most definite need for a device larger than an iPod but smaller than an iPad.

Plus they all look awful. I bet Scott Forstall uses an Otter Box clipped onto his belt and we all know what his taste is like!

Scott only uses the belt-clipped Otter Box for the off chance that him and Jony get in a tickle fight at Gourmet Haus Staudt. Standard protocol.

if the invite does not go out tomorrow

then iPad mini is cancelled. :D

tim cook is too busy he cannot announce the iPad mini neither the iMac or Mac Mini or 13" MBP retina ...

I am curious to see if we see an invite go out tomorrow for this purported iPad Mini event that probably also has iMac and Mac Mini updates. Not to mention the release of iTunes 11. If iPad Mini is real, I will definitely be tempted to get one. My only concern is that in order to compete price-wise, Apple will probably not include a retina display in it, which will suck. I would love to have a "7.85 iPad that is just as powerful as the new iPad.

interesting thoughts folks... thanks.

I think this tells us that all of the iPad Mini mockups we have been looking at for the past few months have been fake.

Yep.

It wasn't a design change as the design likely hasn't been revealed. Apple probably doesn't give a **** about their being third party cases for this. Assuming it is real that is

They are probably worried it is vapor like he teardrop so they aren't going to actually start production but they don't want to look totally dumb so they are pushing 'information leaked might be incorrect' instead. It's like analysts taking about delays when in fact they were just wrong. The real Apple TV that was supposed to be released during the summer, 'delayed' to Fall, then next year, then 2014 etc is a prime example

And, on a more practical note, we're likely to be getting to the point where a powerful laptop attached to an external monitory is good for 99.9% of tasks that anyone used to use desktops for.

More like we are already at the point where a tablet is good for 100% of what 90% of folks use a computer for.

I bet he doesn't. Because if he shatters his iPhone he can probably walk down the hall and grab a new one.

They don't. However, someone like me they might.

I have an iPhone (3.5" screen"), an iPad 1 (10" screen), a 13" HP Laptop (work), and a 27" iMac. I don't want to upgrade my iPad for 2 reasons, 1) 10" is just a little too large for when I need it and 2) it is a little more expensive than I'd like.

So for me, an iPhone (3.5" screen), an iPad Mini (8" screen), a 13" laptop, and a 27" iMac works much better than the current setup.

Are desktops really dead??

They are not yet dead, but I would not expect Apple to put much more than minimal resources into them. The Mac Pro will continue to be produced in limited quantities for a while, and the iMac might see a spec bump before that too is discontinued.

Why don't they just wait and see the final design. Apple rarely announces products and releases them the same day any more. There is usually at least a week between announcement and release. Isn't that enough time to finish the design and start manufacture?

They don't. It's not intended for people like you.

It's intended for people who would otherwise buy a Nexus or a Kindle or any of the other cheap 7 inchers out there.

If you had 3 kids all wanting a tablet for Christmas and you were on a budget so you couldn't afford to get them all an iPad you would understand.

Apple HQ keeps bowls full of iPhones sitting around like M&Ms :D

Yeah, assuming the specs are as rumored ...

It'll be for people who want a tablet (an iPad specifically) at a lower price point (that's an assumption on my part it'll be a $299 entry price). People who aren't concerned about the size (see below) will want a decent enough difference between full sized iPads and this product, otherwise it'll be the "why not pay another XXX and get an iPad 2/3).

Also, while the size difference isn't dramatic, if the height, width (narrower side bezel) and weight are as rumored, that makes it a good bit more flexible. It would fit in smaller bags, glove boxes, in a holder on a dash, much easier to hold one handed (so better for enterprise use like inventory systems), easier for kids to hold, etc.

And, on a more practical note, we're likely to be getting to the point where a powerful laptop attached to an external monitory is good for 99.9% of tasks that anyone used to use desktops for. Already laptops, basic ones, are more than powerful enough for most people. The only ones left who need desktop computers are the 0.01% who do heavy work with movies, sound and graphics, maybe CAD. I mean, other then them... who needs a desktop now?

WHEW!

Thank god. Thanks for explaining it to me.

come to think of it this sounds like a 100% apple move.

Instead of buying a $1700 desktop, i can basically do the same thing with a $2200 laptop, $1000 dollar display, and $300 external hard drive.

Textbook apple move actually.

Is it mandatory to respond to innocuous posts where someone's trying to explore some stuff with unfunny sarcasm? I mean, really, what's your problem?

Like they would change the iPad mini now if it was to be released or announced (Which is usually the same day for the iPads) next week or even next Month.
