Except that a phone and a tablet are different devices with different purposes... And I didn't say that people HATE Androids because of the screen size, but rather the screen size with the aspect ratio isn't enough screen space to be a useful tablet IMO.

16:9 would be fine for an iPad Mini, too, I assume... But the screen would have to be longer.

You finally nailed it on the last sentence of your post.

Thanks. :D

Even if people says they want 16:9 for movies, I think a lost of films are closer to the 21:9 aspect ratio.

Anyways, I think this image is pretty convincing:

I have a Nexus 7 tablet and while I like using it, there is a lot of the screen not useable. Even watching Transformers 3 on it, I sometimes feel like zooming in.

Even Microsoft Word works like a 4:3 screen in widescreen mode.

I know eventually Apple, under the direction of Mr. Cook, will make the iPad 16:9 at some point. The iPhone 5.....I don't like it in 16:9 which is why I am still holding on to my 4S. It's 'too tall jones' and the default portrait mode for me isn't really useable as a phone.

Is there anyway Apple can scale their graphics to not have to quadruple the pixel count? Basically, Apple is implying it is either the existing 1024 x 768 or the iPad 3/4's pixel count that is 4 times higher. I guess there is no happy medium because that will mean extra scaling and performance degradation.

Here's an interesting article on the aspect ratio and compromises.

Who knows yet, but I have a feeling there's gonna be some sacrifice or retirement somewhere in the next couple of years for the aspect ratios or pixel ratios.

What are you complaining about? Apple is a business. Have you seen their 'disapointing' profits? Your comment does not match reality.
Simply sharing my perspective as a customer, no complaints from me.

As an APPL shareholder of over twenty years, the profits I've made from my stock has made me obscenely wealthy. Funny how that works.

Thanks. :D

Really interesting. To me your picture comparison makes the 16:9 option look really nice - I think the Surface is somewhat wider still, and that made it look odd from pics. It certainly makes portrait use at that size seem uncomfortable, but then the Surface at least seems to be almost all landscape use.

As for the iPhone, I find it very hard to go back to looking at the 4/4s; I think the change for the 5 was a brilliant one. It works great for portrait as you fit in those few extra lines, and it is not big enough to start feeling strange; and for landscape, well I only really do landscape for games, and it is nice to have the little bit extra for those that support it.

The comparison misses the forest for the trees in my view. Go back and look. The mini's screen is A LOT bigger while the device is only slightly larger than the fire. I've handled both devices and, even putting the mini's overwhelming software advantage aside, it is the device I would choose hands down.

The consensus seems to be that Apple made too many compromises in making the Mini, while not pricing it competitively enough. May not make as much of an impact on small tablet sales as they were expecting. This is the most rapidly growing segment of the tablet market, and Apple may have to react quickly to avoid being on the outside looking in. Great news for Google and the Nexus, though, as their market share should continue to steadily increase.

Consensus on MacWhiners.com? ;) I think the reviewers, the people who've bought one and general laws of supply and demand would disagree with you. C'mon, they just sold 3 million iPads this weekend and minis are sold out worldwide. And they did that without LTE models, and they didn't have to give it away for cost!

I think google is paying people off to troll these blogs. Seriously, 1 week of advertising the Nexus 7. I have a iPad 3 with retina and I purchased a iPad Mini. Although it does not have a retina, it's still pretty darn good. I have no interest in converting to android. It doesn't matter if it's 50 times better. I have played with one for a couple of days and have no interest in purchasing one.

Serious question; where does one have to go to see a Nexus 7? I have been to Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile, RadioShack, and AT&T. None of them have a Nexus 7 on display. How are they expecting to sell any when no body had them? I only bring this up because the mini has piqued my curiosity.

Good question. And it says a lot about how crazy good that little device is. Its pretty much word of mouth. There might be a a few stores but none of the big ones. That says a lot about how much people love it. When you hold it and play with it for a bit, you think .."$199 for all this ! ? !! " your're going to want it.
$400 for the same old shi......(Crap) from iOS and you will kick yourself.
Get out there, try all the wicked cool tech we have now. Don't be trapped in the Apple bubble.

I asked before and no one bothered to answer, maybe you will now. Is the 16:10 or 16:9 as awkward to use as the pictures I've see online? I have never held one so I don't know. I'm honestly curious. I am so used to the 4:3 from the iPad and I love holding in in portrait so I assumed it would be really weird to go to such a longer display. 4:3 seems so natural.

Not at all Bro.

Try it for yourself. Check Google for reviews ( I've never seen a bad review)

What a sad life you lead in trying to sway a person or two toward the dark side. :apple:

Coming from an iPad 1st Gen, the mini looks appealing. I might be interested in the Nexus 7, except:

•I'm kinda locked into the :apple: ecosystem
•Nobody has the Nexus for me to try out

Given that the following is the actual difference between text on the iPad mini (left) and the 3rd-gen iPad (right), I think we'll ride out the doomsaying "iPad mini text looks like it belongs in an 8-bit Nintendo game" hyperbole about the lack of Retina display without too much worry. :p

The Nexus 7 is a much better device - faster, better screen, better shape and better build quality. I dont see why people would pay more for the inferior ipad mini.

I currently have in front of me an iPad mini, nexus 7 and an iPad 2. Display wise (text clarity) the nexus 7 is the best out of all if them.

In terms of iPad 2 and iPad mini display, I'd say the mini is marginally better.

But that's just me what do I know? I'm just looking at them with the same websites and pages loaded up. I'd show a pic but it has a different website loaded up and maybe MacRumours would kill me for advertising another site! Lol

I'm sure Apple could release some kind of clear type to smooth the text in a software update. But I doubt they will. However if they did do some kind of clear type it would make the reading much more pleasurable for me.

Cannibalization (?) questions:

What would apple have to change about iPad4's display in future if the mini was updated to a retina display? - So, in order to make people still choose the larger future iPad over the next mini.

Would they have to make the iPad4's bezel smaller now that the software has been tweaked to deal with this as on the mini?

Could they make iPad4's resolution even bigger that way or stay with the same resolution but use a bigger physical screen size to optimize readability of text etc.?

Just random thoughts.

PS: I played with a mini yesterday at the store. I thought the display was 'nice' but not stellar, but text size on websites was quite small. The form factor and lightness, however, were great.

It's funny how sales figures imply excellent products when it comes to Apple, and yet never did when it came to, say, Windows PCs, or now with Android devices.

Either sales figures are an important indicator of quality or they're not. They can't only matter when Apple is winning.

When it's high Android selling it means that buyers are smart, when it's high Apple selling it means that buyers are iSheep.

Rules change according to the device you buy for haters ...

am i the only one finding the article misleading?
news are getting more fanboy-y than they used to be.
the source says the display of ipad mini is the worst compared to competitors in all fields, resolution, glare, and gamut.
calling it very capable seems more a way to mitigate the disappointing news..

The mini's form factor is just crushing the competition. The Fire HD and Nexus 7 look like fat and cheap knockoffs.

iPad mini must be godlike in it's ability. How else could it make something that came first look like a knock off of something that came later. Time folding is a truly amazing feature I didn't realise Apple had incorporated into the mini.
