Serious question; where does one have to go to see a Nexus 7? I have been to Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile, RadioShack, and AT&T. None of them have a Nexus 7 on display. How are they expecting to sell any when no body had them? I only bring this up because the mini has piqued my curiosity.

seen them at Staples and GameStop

according to milo.com they are also sold at Office Depot, Fry's, Micro Center in my area and most are apparently sold out

I just wish it was a bit brighter so I could comfortably enjoy using it between classes on campus without squinting.

When comparing cheap, inexpensive products (Windows PCs, Androids) to Apple products, it's EXPECTED that the numbers are in the favor of the cheaper product. There should be more Fords sold every year than Lamborginis.

But if the OPPOSITE happened - more Lamborginis instead of Fords were sold, despite the more expensive price, clearly Lamborgini is the winner. This is the same with Apple products.

For example, there are 2 soda machines. One is stocked with Coca Cola for $1.00 a bottle. The other is stocked with RC Cola for 40 cents a bottle. They are very similar products. You would expect RC Cola to win based on price. If Coca Cola wins (more sold), it's clear that Coca Cola is the better product - people will pay extra for it.

Stop drinking the Apple koolaid. Its rotting your brain.

Android and windows products are cheaper? Let me guess. Youre going to say people who cant afford an iphone buy an android product.

Galaxy note 2 retails/starts at $299. Every other highend Android starts at 199. Same as apple.

Youre gonna sit there, lie to yourself, and still say Android products are cheap and inexpensive?

Brainwashing at its finest.

Aren't we just comparing a 3 series BMW entry model to a fully loaded mid-size sedan from Ford? I always loved when people do these care comparisons. Apple didn't screw up just like BMW didn't screw up to offer "luxury" base models when the competition has better "specs(options)" for cheaper.

Why did you post twice? You should of just edited your first post?

Anyway, the battery will last what 3 or 4 years before it starts to die? If you receive it as a gift then you may want to keep it going for longer then 4 or 5 years when it costs the money they do no?

As for your argument, flawed, and no, the iPad Mini is hardly a BMW, they DID screw up, the are loosing market share as proven on Mac Rumors front page today, it is loosing to Android devices, you can't really include Microsoft as they are too new. If anything the Samsung, Google, Amazon tablets are Audi's.

So if Apple is loosing it's market share to it's competitors, it sells a weak lower specced higher priced competitor in reaction to the market, how have they not screwed up? As I said I'm sure it will sell, but even then, I read on news websites, with potos to back it up, that Apple in the UK had security staff hired, barriers hired, expected all these massive queues on iPad Mini launch day, and in London anyway they had NO queues at all!
If Apple expected a reaction the same as the iPhone, and instead got a luke warm steady ish stream of buyers, they screwed up and they know it.

I should also add that speaking of specs, with the 9.7" iPad now WAY WAY WAY more powerful, it does make the Mini look even more like a bit of a wimp.

Thanks. Damn, I just drove by a Staples an hour ago. They really need to sell them everywhere if they want to sell them.

I did see a Surface at Best Buy though. Wish I hadn't though. Garbage.

I don't know what you use your tablet for, I use mine for basic things like calender, notes, reminders, e-mail, surfing web, listening to music and playing some games. I have NEVER felt my iPad 2 was slugging in ANY way at all.

Some people think the Mini is a failure, some like it. I think we're all voting with our wallets. At least we have options, whether it be the competition or different sizes/products from Apple. Life goes on.

Your whole battery argument still makes me laugh, I don't know anyone with a iPad 1 or iPhone 3G or even the original iPhone's who's had their battery die. Never heard of it once.

With the battery argument, how long does an MacBook Pro battery last before it starts to loose charge? How many times can you run it flat, leave it for 5 hours, recharge it? So what is going to happen with the Retina models glued in battery's?

Anyway, lets hope these small devices DO last a long time with the battery's, otherwise yes it is all about choice.
But Apple has failed with it's offering :D and if I WAS in the market for a mini, I sure as hell would wait for the next revision next year with A6 and retina...

Personally I have gone for a Nexus 7 32GB, but I only did that after seeing what Apple was going to bring to the table, plus having an iPhone 5 and several other iPhones before made me want something different to iOS.

Just don't be surprised if you buy a Mini now, you feel sore next year when it gets upgraded a lot. Because as I said, compared to the full size iPad, it's ridiculous.

a Surface at Best Buy? thought those were Windows Store/online only

And even then, the resolution is as good as or better than any ebook reader out there until recently (well, the Kindle DX might be an exception for the three people who bought one).

low resolution doesn't seem to affect e-ink as much when it comes to text. Sure, pictures looked terrible, but text was always crisp and dark. It wasn't the sharpness of the text that was ever a problem, although background is not as white as it could be.

The way I see the iPad Mini is Apple's way of testing the water. They are trying to enter a new market that they did not establish. So they gave it enough features that would make the device sell. Then depending on its success, commercial and critical, it might see future versions with better features at the same price point.

My personal experience has been all my Apple devices have kept their value extremely well. With that in mind, it makes it very easy to upgrade most (not all) of my Apple stuff every 2-3 years and barely feel it financially. An example is I'll be selling(maybe, not 100% sure yet) my iPad 2 32GB and I will actually walk away with a couple bucks($20?) after getting the iPad Mini 16GB.

You are completely right though that it is very obvious that the next Mini will be a beast compared to what it is now. But what I think most people don't realize is with all that power and wonderful display will come maybe slightly worse battery life and probably more weight. We're talking minor numbers here, but for me those numbers were enough for me not to get the iPad 3/4. I guess I want my portable equipment to be really light (keep in mind that when I say that I only say it after recently having fallen in love with the weight of the iPad Mini and iPhone 5, I didn't feel like this couple months ago).

in portrait mode, I see more of your example (cnn.com) on my 7 than on my co-worker's Mini. The "longer" screen works in its favor.

Well, yeah, but the point is, the text is still 79% smaller in portrait mode on the 16:10 7" tablets and rendered at an effective resolution of 216*.79 or 170 PPI, which is what a lot of people don't seem to realize, since 216 is obviously 53 bigger than 163, right?

Bah!

It's funny how sales figures imply excellent products when it comes to Apple, and yet never did when it came to, say, Windows PCs, or now with Android devices.

Either sales figures are an important indicator of quality or they're not. They can't only matter when Apple is winning.

No, no no no no no.. Android figures are always sold 'to retail outlets'.. they never reflect sold to PEOPLE.. get your facts straight.. Samsung and others use a very deceptive form of hype.. and why many have learned to ignore their sold numbers and look to web browser traffic.

When Apple reports sales, it's to individuals. It's not some box sitting n a warehouse.. waiting, hoping, to actually be bought by a consumer. ROFL!

I think that's what it was. It had a Windows emblem on it. Maybe it wasn't a Surface, but are there any other tablets out there running windows?

This makes no sense over the long term - stores won't buy countless Android devices to sit on shelves after not selling them. Over the long term, the numbers reported are the numbers of devices sold. Plus, Apple has misrepresented sales figures as well.

However, hey, keep pushing the myth that the Android numbers aren't real.

I totally agree but I really wonder how much thicker or heavier it will get because of those upgrades. I find the current thickness and weight to be fantastic.

I doubt much...because it didn't happen barely at all with the iPad 3 or 4.

heh heh, a couple points. The low end market share that Apple lose to Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 has no profit in it. Both Amazon and Google loss money on their respective tablet not break even (BOM cost + manufacture profit + warranty cost + reseller profit + broken component in manufacture process + rework cost + design cost + transportation cost pretty much guarantee both company will loss money on the current sales price). I am not sure why Apple should give away their tablet at a loss to fight for those market share.

Didn't you hear today that Apple sold 3M unit of Ipad mini+Ipad 4 in the first weekend? And most importantly they are supply constrainted. So whatever projection they have before the weekend, they more than meet that projection.. The local store misjudge the line .. big deal... so long as they can sell the stock, they are all good. didn't I see a UK reserve thread in the IPad section?

1024x768 is out of date.

Very much so.

Apple (only) 162 ppi

Nexus 7 ..... 216 ppi

So Apple charges a whopping $329 for a tablet that is widely reported to cost approx $188 to build, while equipping said tablet with a low res 1024x768 is just shameful.

Yet the problem is Apple knows no shame, nor cares.

It's as though they are forcing out some of their most loyal, avid long time user base simply because of their egotistical moves.

I have both, so I am happy.

I'm curious are any other Mini owners keeping their iPad 2/3/4? To me it seems a little like having a 11" Air and a 13" MacBook Pro with retina. Which would be AWESOME but overkill, no?

I'm confused as to how you reach your 170 ppi figure, since the text is rendered at 216 ppi, and there's a very small amount more of it horizontally (due to a very small amount more pixels), and a fair but more of it vertically when comparing an 800x1280 screen to a 768x1024 one.

Granted, the letters themselves are tinier, but there are more of them.

If one thing came out of he Samsung vs Apple trial, it was that Samsung definitely wasn't 'selling' what they 'shipped'...the numbers don't lie. Shipped vs Sold was vastly different.

So yah...I'm going to keep believing the facts, or myth as you call it, that Android sales aren't that good.
