I own am iPad 2 and have compared the screens side-by-side. The mini does not have a better screen. And why are you waiting for November 26th to get it. I bet you can get one much sooner by walking into an Apple Store.

I own both ipad2 and mini. The screen is better on the mini.

They're only trying to justify their position. If they can ignore that iOS is such a better tablet os than anything out there and get you focused on why you need a quad core 7" tablet that does nothing particularly well they will try their hardest.

The article was about a technical assessment, so of course specs are part of the ensuing discussion. I would suggest that arguing against the specs repeatedly through the discussion could be interpreted as justifying a position.

Things improve in landscape mode, but the Mini gets an advantage from being able to display more vertically; IOW, it sucks less in landscape mode than the other tablets.

try the same thing on iphone 4s compared to iphone 5

Given that the iPad3 had to get thicker to accommodate the battery needed for Retina, I'm sure that was a factor to consider if they were going to put a Retina display in the Mini at the expense of weight/thickness...

Saw one at the store over the weekend and was quite impressed at how luxurious it felt.

I'm sure they couldn't have put a retina display in this year's iPad mini. But chose not to so they have a selling point for next year's iPad mini

Hey, hey, heeeeeeeeeeeey.... it's perfect for men too okay

After using the Mini a few times now I can't help but think the 7.9" is perfect for proper tablet use (everywhere, anywhere, all the time). The 9.7" feels like I'd only really want to use it in bed where I rest it on my chest :)

I know, I am tempted to sell my iPad 2 for a mini... I was more or less adding to post I quoted about his wife using the iPad to read in bed.

I think I will just go back to the good old days - buy whatever gadget I want / need AND stop watching the pissing contest among the trolls in message boards and (tech) media.

This is one of the first times I've heard someone say that about it. I find it built really well.

I had also made that comment on another site. Not cheap, per se. its a combination of things. The thinness, and the lightness contribute to it feeling less solid than other ipad. my ipad2 feels "dense", but the ipadmini feels like its hollow.

It feels cheaper than the ipad2/3/4, but, in reality, it is.

And that's another thing. If some random Apple product has better specs than the competitions (see A6 and all that good stuff), you'll get people talking nonstop about how much better the hardware is. If the competition does the same thing, suddenly "BUT SPECS DON'T MATTER! IT'S ABOUT EXXXPPPEERRIIIEENNNCCEEE! APPLE GETS IT, THEY DON'T"!

If 216 ppi is so much better than 163, why is 163 not better than 132?
.

I don't know. I don't get caught up in all the specs and such, but rely on my own eyes and the Mini's screen is lacking. Maybe because I'm comparing my iPhone's 326 dpi to 163 dpi, which makes the mini look pedestrian at best. Or maybe because 163 is much closer to 132 than to 216. Plus, you usually hold the Mini closer to your eyes, negating any increase dpi benefit.

Besides, why so angry? If you think the mini's screen is amazing, you've already convinced yourself. You job is done.

This is my main reason for waiting until next year. Other reason: A6. Of course, this is all dependent on IF Apple brings the above to the table next year.

You could say the same thing as the iPhone 5 compared to the 4 and 4S. Believe me though, after using it for a little while (not just at the store) you would never want to go back to something heavier.

I mean realistically the future is everything getting lighter. The balance is finding the perfect point where it doesn't feel too light making it seem cheap. I find the Mini and iPhone 5 to be perfect. (Will they make it even lighter in the future and I'll they THOSE are perfect in the future? Maybe.)

Interesting... I'm thinking Apple has some work to do to make the Mini really take off (though I guess their holiday sales numbers may prove me wrong!)

Personally, my ideal iPad doesn't exist quite yet:
* iPad 4 power & display with the thickness, weight and battery life of an iPad 2 (or better!)

And my idea iPad Mini:
* Retina at the current size, thickness & weight + A6X (and battery life of the iPad 2 -- not sure where it is at the moment)

Gee I was waiting for the mini. I have not held it yet. I just saw it in the display window of the store. My immediate reaction was that I would like the size. However, I am a big fan the retina display which will probably cause me to keep waiting for an upgrade mini. :)

Then maybe my memory is not as great as I thought, but regardless, I used one in Best Buy and really liked it enough to order one online. I also kept my iPad backup and will be able to sync everything again.

I would if they had them in stock, but I only want the 16GB white WiFi version. If I wanted a 64GB version, then those are readily available in the Apple Stores and other retailers, but I only have so much money to spend.

I never said it was amazing.....

And I'm not angry, simply making statements based in fact and logic to counter those based in hate for the sake of hate.

The iPhone (with its smaller screen) is generally held closer to your face - thus a higher ppi is required to make it "retina" (make the pixels seamless). You won't (or at least I won't) be holding my iPad (mini or retina) as close to my face as my iPhone, therefore a lower ppi is needed to attain retina (the 9.7" iPad has 245 ppi).

My point is the screen isn't the only feature - and there are reasons why Apple went with the resolution they did. I guarantee, if Apple had come out with a retina iPad mini the same people crying over the resolution now would be spittin' mad they had to wait for developers to adjust apps to the new resolution.

Yes it was, and did you see the original prototype? It was huge.

You have no proof of this, its pure speculation, Steve thought a 7 inch wouldn't work, he was proven wrong by competitors so Apple brought out a 7 inch iPad.
It's actually a 7.9 inch iPad, as Apple executives have taken great pains to explain.

They agree that a 7 inch screen is too small (as Steve proclaimed). But 7.9 inches is the "sweet spot".

The iPad mini's battery life is better than the iPad 2 by about an hour. What you're proposing for the mini is likely impossible to manufacture at this point - but hey, they improve every year!

Realistically though... those tablets are only on the market because of the original iPad.... So I agree with you... enough with this crap...

Those 7" tablets are on the market because they needed a better way to compete with Apple and the iPad... So they made a smaller, cheaper one to have a larger advantage.

It makes me laugh, apparently only Apple copied other companies by making a smaller, less expensive tablet... Not Amazon, Google, or Samsung... Nope, apparently all three of them (and any other companies with smaller tablets) didn't copy each other either.

To be honest, I have no idea which 7" tablet came first, wasnt it an HTC or something?? Anybody know?

This entire argument is bs... Amazon, Google, Samsung, Apple, who care's if it's a giant game of "copy". Competing car companies long ago didn't give each other s*#t because another company put 4 wheels on their vehicle just like they did. Give me a break

What gets lost in those wonderfully descriptive posts you mention is the fact Apple products don't need overkill specs to run smoothly and sell well - those of us who present that argument in a more reasonable manner will tell you this.

And when an Apple product happens to have better specs, we just say "Damn, not only do they run better and sell the most - they have the best specs too!"

So hold. Android tablets suck because they didn't have retina. iPad mini doesn't have it. It's not practical? Logic?

as i had already said. I OWN the ipad mini and ipad2. Why would I have to go back to anything?
