Go with the latest and greatest. This is the rule with technology that I follow. My DD12 has an iPad 3rd Gen 64 GB AT&T model, which is still supported and up to date iOS. However, her 6-year-old sister has an original iPad 64 GB AT&T model, which is now orphaned on iOS 5. Trust me, I hear it all the time about what games won't work on her iPad. While still a good functional machine it isn't the same as a device running iOS 8.
It's not a question of IF the iPad you purchase gets orphaned, it's a question of WHEN. The difference in the money is slight. Get the newer one.
