Does one really "need" a product bad enough to wait in line. I realize that products sell out quickly but I would be embarrassed to wait in line like that for a gadget. Its very silly imo.

more and more people pre-order and wait in the comfort of their home or office.

The lines may be "mini", but at least there are lines! I've NEVER heard of lines for a Samsung product :)

I know what you mean... I would wait in line for the Note 2. However, I'll be able to stroll in to my att store and pick one up no problem.

Real Apple fans will stay in line for their best products, iPad 3/4 not the mini. The iPad mini is a niche market. It will sell a lot, though.

Experience

I waited in a very short line for the iPad mini. There were several units left when I finally bought mine. The excitement was low key, but I suspect many pre-ordered, and others are waiting for LTE.

In personal use, I like it. Form, and function, are excellent. I have a iPad 3 and don't miss the retina display as the pixels are tightened up on the 7.9" display. I could see the mini becoming my iPad of choice on form alone. I feel Apple has another hit on their hands, which will grow steadily as people experience them "in the wild."

As for retina display fans, are you sure you know what you want? Ipad 4 is about 1.44lb and Ipad mini is about 3/4 size of the Ipad 4. So a retina display at IPad 4 resolution of 2048x1536 Ipad min probably will weight about 1.08 lb (Ipad mini weight 0.68 lb), about 58% more than Ipad mini. And then who is going to pay for the cost of the extra set of led back light (Ipad 3/4 use 2 set of LED backlight) and the bigger battery pack (because of the extra set of LED back light). So an Ipad mini with retina display at Ipad 4 resolution will probably weight 58% more + may be $80 more.. Anyone still interest in a device like that?

Apple can get to retina spec on Ipad mini without going to 2048x1536 because of the smaller size (much like Nexus 7), but it introduces screen layout problem to all the tablet app in existence. A new resolution will force all the existing app to update the design and who know the schedule of when will they be done. So we end up a device that is just like Android tablet, a tablet with much better spec but terrible app experience. Is that what you want? I know I don't.

Ipad mini is not a flagship device. It is a entry level device that is much more mobile than the flagship Ipad 4. It cost lower and you can use it with one hand. If you are not willing to pay for the flagship price, you shouldn't compare it to the flagship features. Comparing to Nexus 7 or Amazon Fire HD is a fair game. But there is a reason that Google and Amazon priced their tablet with such a low price. It is an indication that the demand for their product is weak at higher price point. Asking for a lower price Ipad mini is like saying I want a steak but I am only willing to pay a hamburg price. Of course, you are going to be disappointed. Ipad mini is going to be the lowest margin product in the current Apple product line up. They discussed this in Apple earning conference call a week or so ago. Ipad 2 and Ipad 3 has 23 to 32% gross margin. After paying tax, design cost, distribution cost and pay tax, Apple at best make 10-12% on each Ipad 2 and Ipad 3. The base Ipad mini gross margin is going to be in the high teen and Apple probably make 3-5% profit after all the expense. The only way Apple can make money on Ipad mini is customer buy a lot of the high end model (the 32g, 64G or the one with wifi). The high end model will have a much better gross margin. Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD loss money for Google and Amazon. Google make up the loss by the search revenue (Google pay Apple to be used as the default search engine in IOS device but no fee to anyone for Android device). Amzn make it up when people spend money on their site and they sold the default search engine right to Microsoft.

so far, one of the most insightful and smart comments in this thread here.

this prevalent non-retina whining and iPadMini bashing is part of a tech-fetishism culture that lost more and more grounding in what is really reasonable and truly necessary.

i haven't bought an iPad because of its size, and stuck with iPodTouch instead, waiting for a smaller form factor, using my MBAir instead. the iPadMini is precisely what I need, and I assume many others agree. Like others, as soon as the LTE is out, i will have one. ANd like others, I didn't go to buy a nexus or whatnot. Even given superior specs, I wouldn't do it because, like many others, all computers I own are from Apple. And i do not want to bother with any fiddling around to get things done -- one of the main reasons to stick with Apple: their stuff is just easy to deal with.

so what if iPadMini doesn't have retina display? When iPad2 came out, people where salivating over the screen and overall experience. Suddenly, human evolution increased eye sensitivity and this kind of resolution is no longer bearable -- some declaring here that below retina they cannot endure any display! Oh, what refined senses and tastes they are blessed with! Just like any other bourgeois snob who cannot endure any wine below 95 Parker points.

This is childish complaining on an unprecedentedly comfortable level of end-user satisfaction. And most of those complaining never had to develop such a device in the first place and have no understanding of the reasons behind form factor and component decisions that large teams of highly talented people made over months of analysis and trial-and-error. Give those guys at Apple some credit -- especially considering the fact that most of us here would have no chance to land a job at that company simply because we are not good enough.

Is not it amazing how Samsung manages to sell twice more smart phones (and more mobile devices in total) than Apple without any lines?

----------

Think about it: Anything with a stylus means you can NEVER use it with one hand. I owned about 10 PALM devices. That was enough with a stylus.

Galaxy Note does not require one to use a stylus. It has regular touch interface. It offers additional features (not available on other smart phones) that provide extra precision and pressure sensitivity which can only be used with stylus but those make no sense without a stylus anyways. In short, nobody uses stylus for using Facebook on Galaxy Note.

Ah, "fanboy" and "kool-aid" again.

Why can't they just like the product? Why does it always have to be something sinister? Why do we all have to agree with you that it sucks?
Guess I forgot my sarcasm tag. ;)

I wonder if this phenomena (Apple lines) even exists in non English speaking countries? GB feeling like "little brothers" and following in the foot steps of Americans is a well known fact. What about, say, France?

The media and anti-Apple trolls will have a field day, but can't say Apple doesn't deserve it this round. It's really not a "gotta have it right now" product. Ultimately, sales will be great this quarter and that is all that matters.

But I hope Apple is taking note. They need to beef up the screen and proc. next round. Instead of a mini iPad and iPad retina line they need an iPad and iPad Pro line. Sell both sizes like the MBP, but one as a "budget" model, and the other with all the tech bells and whistles. The mini shouldn't be hobbled by a two year old proc and 512GB RAM just because it's smaller.

I love my iPad 3 but it is a bit heavy and thick. The Mini addresses the thickness and weight issue head-on, but that means, at least for this generation, no Retina until Apple figures out how to reduce power consumption for the screen. A retina on the Mini right now would mean it would be a lot thicker and heavier. Will I get one? I am inclined to wait until next year as I am more keen on getting a new laptop this fall, but I might change my mind after playing around with a Mini. It is hard to step back to non-Retina after the iPhone and iPad 3.
The A5 is fine. It was fine in the iPad 3, which was really just an A5 with wider memory interfaces and more GPUs to handle the increased pixels. So the A5 is really only one generation behind, if you understand chip design. I suspect that Apple really wanted to have the A6X in the iPad 3 but they could not get it done in time so they hacked together the A5X. Of course the A6 and A6X are ridiculously fast and it would be awesome to have an A6 in the Mini, but I would assume that the iPad Mini and iPod Touch will always be a generation behind the iPhone and iPad, that is your Pro and Mini lineup right there. Next year the Mini will likely get an A6 with Retina, or at least something approaching retina DPI.

My advice is do not get hung up on specs, there will always be something better coming out in a few months.

there are one or two exceptional posts here that give some excellent reasons for the short lines for the iPad mini. In addition don.t forget that this launch is as compared to the last few is being simultanious in 26 countries both retail and online orders. they have 10 million in supply.. forget my grammer, broken laptop and keyboard at the moment..,l,/ u know what i ment... with i pad 1 and 2 we had to wait 3 months for some countries.... now they can supply most of the world straight away.... we will hear the numbers next week... u bethca it will be hiogh despite...m how it seems;[]- ;)

Don't flatter yourself....

When you shaft iPad 3 owners don't expect them to return for another round so quickly.

How did yours get shafted, that sucks. I was lucky I guess. Mine still works like it did when I bought it, same speed, still has retina, even got a free upgrade to the OS a little while back. How did yours stop working? Try taking it back to Apple store, they'll replace it if something is wrong.

/sarcasm

Amen brother! I was furious when they announced the fourth gen iPad. I'm a launch day buyer, but have definitely learned my lesson on that one!

All progress should stop to allow a cooling off cycle for previous buyers.

We call this phenomena, SADs. Satisfaction Apple Dependent syndrome.

I've been waiting for months for the iPad mini and yet now that it's here I'm in no rush. It's the screen that has put me off. I want it for reading and that's exactly where the old low res screen fails.

Maybe that's why so many others aren't in line either.

Apple, you miscalculated. Learn a lesson from this.

Don't be a vag.

Keyword "if" but it doesn't. The mini is a "mee too" device because so many others are doing smaller tablets...better.

I know that the design and build is so great, but it is technology. I personally do not buy this stuff to put it in a frame or try to sell it in 20 years as a collectors piece. I buy it to use it.

I have a plastic, large bezel Kindle, made by that inferior company Amazon (sarcasm) and I love it. Apple, IMO, needs to get back to really innovating. The iPhone was an innovation. Guess we will see what J.Ive comes up with next.

Paying a premium for a device that has lackluster specs, that will only be around for a year tops, seems silly to me.

I say all this because I have been a loyal Apple fan for over 15 years. But, I recently switched to an Android Galaxy S3 phone from the iphone and I love that too. The Android store is way bigger than Apple fans like to admit. I can honestly say there is not 1 app that I had on my iphone that I did not get on my S3...that I NEEDED.

Sure the Apple app ecosystem has more apps, but I don't need a "fart" app or $999 diamond app. I;m looking for these devices to actually make my life easier (cough: iTunes...terrible)

I plan on geting that plastic Google Nexus 10, cause there is a device with some specs...and a beautiful screen.

OK, let the flaming begin....

Somehow I have hard time buying your story... an Apple user of 15 years wouldn't be seduced by specs and cheap plastic... that's the antithesis of what Apple is all about. And as a N7 and former HTC Desire owner, Google Play, the "Android store" doesn't come close to Apple's App Store when it comes to offering apps optimized for big screens. In fact, it's downright awful.

Because of that, I view the Nexus 7 as essentially a giant phone without the ability to make calls. It's a good deal if you don't have a smartphone, but a waste of $200 if you do, IMO.

I went to a local (non apple) store to see if they had any on display. They didn't" but had just had a second shipment in (having sold their first to people who had queued overnight), so I bought one.
I've only had it a few hours, but it is absolutely brilliant - it's unbelievably light and still feels really well built.
For me, the mini isn't just the best small tablet - it's the best tablet, period!
