Just picked one up at one of the Minneapolis stores. In and out within 10 minutes! Wish it was always like this. :)

So I'm confused now - are long lines GOOD or BAD? ;)

I am, of course, referring to those that talk about Apple and/or Samsung and the length of lines to get their products.

When you shaft iPad 3 owners don't expect them to return for another round so quickly.
Shaft them how? The iPad 3 is a great tablet. I'm not aware of any issues with it. Don't whinge just because it hasn't been a year since it was released. Sheesh!
I have every flagship product Apple has produced, but I would never buy a non-Retina iPad mini. Since iPhone 4 there's been no going back. There won't ever be. I'd lose my mind
That was my main concern, being non-retina, as I'd want it partly for reading web articles, so crispness of text is important. But having played with it, I have no problem with it; the reduced size squeezes the pixels anyhow and the text is quite crisp. But I'm sure the next iteration will get Retina.
I've never had an iPad, I've always felt it wasn't right for me somehow, and for reading it was too heavy to hold without resting on a table or your legs. With this, I feel they've hit a sweet spot for me; I can really seem me using it and being a permanent fixture on our coffeetable for reading articles and books and of course Facebook on the couch and checking up on the TV guide. The weight is good. I'd prefer Retina and a lower price, but I have no qualms about getting one.
As for price, it's the usual for Australia that closeness to Asia ought to make transport cheaper, and the exchange rate is in our favour and has been for some time since our economy isn't a basketcase unlike the rest of the Western world, yet it is more expensive here. Still affordable, but it should be cheaper. Below $300, and it would be virtually an impulse buy.

It's still amazingly idiotic to stand in line to buy a MASS product that you can pre-order and purchase ONLINE for the SAME price and get it delivered to your house ON THAT VERY SAME DAY.

The only explanation that I can come up with is that it's some sort of substitute for going to church.

If I ordered home delivery I would have to book the day off work and waste a day's leave waiting for the thing to arrive. Alternatively, I can go the Apple store which is 5 minutes' walk from my office and pick one up on my way in to work.

This falls into the 'No S$^% Sherlock' news. Most people already have an iPad. Not many sold it to get a mini or want 2 iPads. The kids are going to love it in their stockings this Christmas though.

Am surprise there are lines - I thought everyone by now already has at least one tablet or in some sort of economic recession.

No, Apple got to be the biggest company in the world by steering clear of the bottom end of the market where the customers want everything for nothing.

There is a huge difference between "Apple wants to make a quality product that delivers a very good user experience at the 'high end' of the market" and "Apple doesn't really want you as a customer"

And when did "This seems $30 too expensive" become "I want 'everything' for 'nothing'"?

Just curious where the media obsession is with Microsoft's sales figures on Surface RT. They all reported on how it was "sold out" on line. Yet no sales figures released from Microsoft. And when Ballmer was asked about it he said there was nothing significant to report. Lets see Reuters, CNBC et al report on that.

No lines are awesome. I don't think lines are indicative of how well a product will sell. I mean the Galaxy S III has sold millions but afaik no one was waiting in long lines to get one.

Yeah but how many walked out with merchandise? There weren't many at the Apple store this morning. But everyone I saw there walked out with something.

My point is, he was clearly stating opinion, he wasn't making outrageous statements or dressing his opinion up as fact. Based on that I don't think your baseless quasi-psychological assessment of him was warranted.

Psychology 101:

"Apple, IMO, needs to get back to really innovating." = "My life is in ruins! I purchased a non-Apple product and there is no way to return/sell them and get an iPad or iPhone."

Exactly. And personally - as a customer, I'd rather be able to just go in and walk out in minutes with the product I want vs waiting on a line or having a several week shipping delay.

I was skeptical about the screen - but I have to say after playing with one (after purchasing my iPad 4), it looks very nice. Much less noticeable than the iPad 2 - I had to put the retina next to the mini to really tell the difference.

Bought one for the wife, and will hopefully be receiving my own for Christmas!

they had 2 lines at Stonebriar, 1 was to purchase, 1 was to try out, the one to purchase was much longer, it was quite surprising but real

Why would we expect iPad 3 owners to be on line for the launch of the iPad mini unless they are in the market for that size tablet too?

As for getting shafted: why get all crazed when Apple refreshes a product line if you don't need the refreshed model? I have no control over when Apple releases new models. I buy newer gear when my older stuff can't get the job done any more. I might buy a model of a completely new product line (like the iPad mini) when it comes out but if I do that, I won't update it just because Apple might do so on a short refresh cycle. I do my thing, hardware sellers do their thing. When we happen to meet, hopefully they have what I want. If they don't, I keep shopping.

Well.. Basingstoke UK.
15 mins before opening there were about 20 people in front of me. They were giving out cards based on your requirements. I just wanted Black 16GB but they had sold out already. They offered me a 32GB but 16GB of flash isn't worth the amount Apple charge.

I was therefore really pleased with myself for not just spending money when I don't need to. I'll just wait for my web ordered to be delivered :)

However the Apple Store only got about 45 units iPad Mini's in..
Sounds like they can't make them fast enough.
