I think this article is more telling of the overall market... note that they talk about most products they make are down significantly... Seems more like a reflection of the overall global economy which is not good for the most part. Besides... with over 140 million iPads in the market.... it's very possible the market is reaching a saturation point... I know for me, there's no burning reason yet to upgrade my iPad 2.

Let's face it, IOS stuck at some point with boring UI, lack of customization options and so on. Android is evolving every day with new extensions (no matter if good/bad/slow/fast but they are there!) and opening the android source to the public makes small/big/medium publishers/geniuses to create outstanding innovative applications/extensions.

Android openes also to new hardware, and manufacturers are using this opportunity. SGS4 got plenty of sensors, plenty of additional software/hardware that is using them. Its called innovation, and idea. At this point, apple doesnt have "an idea" and "innovations"

If they have, can someone point it? you are all arguing about other vendors but can really someone tell what innovations apple has? - i don't see any.

True dat. It's time for the mini to join the rest of the retina family (MBA is next, if not this year, most definitely next year).

god, i hope not. the Retina display is at odds with the mission of the Air - minimum size and weight with maximum battery life. the Retina display sucks power. Don't need or want it anyway - not much noticeable difference from regular display - just marketing. of course Apple will probably do it since they don't let function drive form anymore. hence, we have a ludicrously long and skinny iPhone 5 that is so light it feels like it came from a Dollar Store, an iMac with tapered edges even though it sits on a desk and no one sees or touches the edges, scroll bars with no arrows anymore, etc. etc. Its no wonder the stock got pounded. Apple has lost its direction.

Apparently Pegatron also revealed plans to employ up to 40,000 new workers as it ramps up production for products set to launch in 2H12. Frankly i think Apple's about to kick back hard against Android -- it has spent two years investing in partners to replace Samsung, Google is no longer core. Neither company now has the sam insight into Apple's plans as before, and a look at its capex in recent quarters suggest it has also been working hard on breakout products. I kind of think AAPL looks good right now.

And because of Android having a problem with audio latency, it's very unlikely that those or similar apps (Apple won't port GarageBand to Android^^) will be released on Android soon.

Even if Google finally changes this in Android 4.3 (or 5.0, whatever the version they will announce at Google I/O next week) - It will take at least a year before that version of Android will be widespread enough to warrant development of those Apps for Android.

And then there's the lack of hardware accessories like the Alesis iO Dock (Pro) for Android devices - and as there are so much more Android device manufacturers and not a single device like with iOS, it's unlikely that anybody (except maybe Samsung itself) would release such a dock for the large number of Android devices.

I'm guessing this day and age, all companies including Apple and Samsung have to sell more for less, to break even, and by looking at the trend, people are going to be less likely to buy more expensive products

I always thought Apple was said to be the one catching up to the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire tablets?

They have been available at least 5 months to a year earlier than the iPad Mini and are way cheaper BUT Apple still outsold the Nexus 7 with the iPad Mini and Kindle Fire interest also seems to have dwindled down.

The only real competitor that has been released AFTER the iPad Mini is the Galaxy Note 8 - which has scored worse in reviews and costs a bit more.

Apple has a brand name, a strong retail presence, a reputation for the specific i-devices and a momentum on sales. There's not going to be a single product to outsell the ipad mini, but collectively the competition is making a very good case for themselves and that's reflected in sales too. So the masses are been drawn to apple. So what?

It's not an ipod vs. nothing type of situation here. It's the ipad vs. some strong and ever growing competition in sales volume. And the point we are dicussing here is if the current ipad mini is a good proposition, and it's not, it's a rip off in terms of price/specifications.

Having said that I would wager that all tablets under 9" sold surpass the ipad mini in terms of sales. Do you have data to prove otherwise?

Well they were pretty innovative with their maps app. When you move half the world around and invent new towns, cities, bridges, airports, even rivers and mountains, that's not just innovative, that's literally earth shattering. I installed maps for ios, and the next day my small town had an airport a few miles away. Thank you apple!:)

To get to the bottom of the story, I asked Pegatron CEO Jason Cheng by e-mail about that quote. Here's what he said:

"We held our Institutional Investors Conference yesterday, and gave out a guidance of our 2Q13 business outlook... The category of Consumer Electronic Product includes game consoles, LCD-TV, e-paper readers, tablet products, and some others. We put all tablet products in this category, but have never broken down to detail numbers for specific products nor customers.

"After the meeting, one reporter from Bloomberg approached me, trying to dig out detail numbers about some specific product. I clearly refused to comment on specific products, nor customers, even though he continued with other questions.
I did say those words that he quotes me in the article "more on demand, while price has been stable"…, "almost every item is moving in a negative direction"…; "Not just tablets, also e-books and games consoles". But I did not say anything associated with any specific products.

"'No indication, nor hint for specific products or customers' has been our principle and guideline for any public events such as investors conference. There are always speculations after these meetings.

You're not holding it right if you don't see a difference.
Your eyes must be 3 inches or less from the tablet to notice the retina display pixel increase.

This is good, but I read it that way from the start. It was clear to me from the original quote that the manufacturer was talking about their entire business in general, not any one of their customers specifically.

Why is this news ? With all the analyst stating that a retina iPad Mini is coming out soon, why would anyone buy a Mini now ?

Exactly right. It's totally irresponsible to analyze quarter to quarter results on a product that has such a big sales cycle variance. They should be publishing a rolling monthly average covering one full sales cycle if they want to present something meaningful. Since this is the first sales cycle, any data presented to illustrate product success is totally worthless.

:) With the way this issue is reported, you'd think that Apple selling 100 million widgets in one quarter and nothing the rest of the year is worse than selling 10 million a quarter.

It isn't nearly so misleading if you don't ignore the rest of the text. A little confusing, perhaps, but I figured it out without a lot of trouble.

The author, according to the CEO, purposely attributed a quote from the CEO as being about iPad mini when it was not. That quote was the basis of much of the article and the headline.

Not sure how you "figured it out" that the CEO was not talking about the iPad mini when the author and the headline clearly said that he was.

Evidently, it was misleading enough that Elmer-DeWitt and MacRumors felt the need to correct it.
