The iPad Mini might be more less convenient, but it's going to last longer, have even brightness, and the text will look great. You might have to hold it farther from your face and make the text a little bigger, but that is pretty much better for your eyes anyway. The Kindle Fire was great to read on, so I can't imagine Apple using a lesser quality display.

I agree with you for the most part, but disagree with this last paragraph. Have people in this thread compared a Retina to a non-Retina Display lately? I own an iPad 2 and own iPhones 4/4S/5 and I honestly dread reading on my iPad 2. Compared to my iPhones, the text looks all blurry. And if I was going to buy an iPad Mini for the sole purpose of reading text, I'd have to think long and hard about what I was getting myself into.

It's great getting caught up with all the hype and the marketing, but as a voracious reader, which I assume most of us are in this thread, I care about my eyes and my comfort. Therefore, I think people should go to the Apple Store and try the mini out before putting their Kindle on eBay. See if you can tolerate starting at the screen; read some white-on-black or black-on-white text and if you don't see any problems with it, then go ahead and buy it.

An iPad (or Kindle Fire, Nook HD, Nexus etc) is not a replacement for a Kindle e-reader. Ignore anyone that tells you're they're somehow equivalent when it comes to reading books. They're not. If you can swing owning both, do it. If you cant and your main goal is reading, get the Kindle.

Six months ago I would have totally agreed with this. Heck - I wrote stuff like that in other forums. I've had a Kindle since the first one came out and have read hundreds of books on e-ink.

Then I got a Kindle Fire HD. I fully intended to play some games on it, and maybe do some reading when I didn't have my Kindle Touch with me, or in low-light situations. And here's the weird thing. I haven't used my e-ink reader in three weeks. I've spent hours reading on the Fire and loved it. Go figure.

Don't believe the hype about the paperwhite. I had two in the uk. Both blotchy and not that great to read from. I really wanted to like it but in the end I think a mini will work out better. However 'bad' the screen may be it will be better than the paperwhite. And read the reviews. Everyone is saying the light causes eye fatigue like iPads so there is no real difference apart from the price!

I prefer reading on my Kindle Paperwhite compared to a LCD screen. That said, the Kindle HD has a higher resolution screen than the iPad Mini which should help when it comes to reading.

The iPad 2 screen is not usable for me even when viewing the web. I hope I don't notice the low res screen on the Mini, but not optimistic.

The Kindle Paperwhite is amazing. It is easily the best Kindle to date and the higher screen resolution is much better than past Kindle's. The text is so crisp and easy on the eyes. The Kindle and Mini have the same resolution screen, but the Kindle is 6" and the Mini is 8".

That said, there are some bad Paperwhite screens out there. For once, I received a good one with great uniformity, no pink or blue hues, and no blotchiness. I leave the light between 8-10. Not sure what setting you were using.
