On the contrary, it's precisely like watching a 70" if the ratio of the viewing distances is equal to the ratio of the screen sizes. Simple geometry.

That's why I said "real world impact" (do you even HAVE a 70" to compare?). If I hold my iPad Air up a foot from from nose, THAT is a more accurate approximation of what the image looks like on my 73".

I'm sitting on my couch testing it. You can math it all day long, a Mini isn't cutting it at a foot, esp with a 70" at 9 feet. I'm at about 10-11 for a 73 and it takes an Air at that distance to begin to approximate it.

But then again, this a ridiculous discussion. :) To actually answer the OP's question, I went with an Air and I could NOT be happier. I tried watching movies/tv on other's minis and it just didn't come close to the immersion of the Air.

That said, it's all a trade-off of size v convenience. The rMini is literally the same thickness so it's just the diff in weight and screen size you have to decide on. The Air was close enough that the mini wasn't enough of a convenience to give up the screen size.

To each his own.

To be honest, the bigger issue for me with movie-watching is the aspect ratio (4:3, which results in letterboxing/black bars), which is the same on both the Mini and the Air.

True but you would have the same issue on any device, except for real 16/9 video which are mostly TV shows. And even for 16/9 shows I prefer to have a 7.9 4/3 tablet than a 7.25 16/9 as it is more versatile (reading books).

I have both the Air and now the mini retina. Have say I like both equally well. I like watching movies on both. I like reading on the mini better just because it is smaller thus making it easier to hold one handed. Guys probably don't notice a difference but women will. The Air is nice because it is lighter than the other ipads but it is still larger than the mini. If I had to choose between the two I wouldn't be able to which is why I have both :D!!

For me, the rMini is perfectly fine for watching movies/TV shows on. While I never watch any videos on my iPhone, I do not hesitate to grab my rMini to watch a show or movie if my fiancee is watching something I'm not interested in. I'm sure the Air is great for movies due to the larger screen, but I still have yet to find the rMini screen to be "too small."

I absolutely love how lightweight my new retina mini is, it does make a difference to me compared to the heavy old iPad 4.

I watch Netflix, HBO/Showtime movies & shows and YouTube A LOT and they look super awesome on the retina screen. It doesn't matter to me that the screen size is smaller than the Air because I can easily hold it with one hand now.

Hello guys i have one question for the ipad rmini users,i think that my iphone screen is too small for watching movies or videos in bed,can someone tell ma if the ipad mini retina is big enough for the movies or should i go with the air?

I watch movies with my iphone 5. ipad mini is great for me.

I think the Rmini is perfect for tv and movies. Although I'm watching video on my ipad 4 today for the first time in a month after using my retina mini for this the last few wks. Feels like watching a big screen tv. Feels pretty cool. I still like the mini better for video because I just find the screen size perfect for that purpose or ebooks but I like the reg ipad for web browsing and typing.
