I have been defending the screen in other threads on the mini, and yes it is not as good as the retina screen, but why would anyone think it would be as good lol. The screen is still good for what it is, and I enjoy using it. I would never and have never expected the screen to be as good as a retina screen, that is just setting it up to fail before you even use it.

Exactly.

I would not even buy it if am that bothered.

I didn't expect it to be as good. Some people though are acting like there isn't much of a difference, but there is.

Yeah I understand, and i mean for people that use an iPad 3 hours on end for months and then go to the mini probably see more of a difference then I do since i dont own one and have only used the iPad 3 a few times. However Both offer nice screens given the specs

I think the main thing for me is small text. On my iPhone/iPad 3 I can read many text blobs without zooming. I can still do the same on the mini, but the text is much more pixelated. With large text held further from your face it is not a big deal.

The mini isn't a retina screen and if someone "must" have a retina screen and therefore don't want a mini that's fine. But people saying it's "terrible" are either delusional or lying. The iPad 1 & 2 didn't have a "terrible" screen and the mini is a bit better than those.

What everyone complaining about the screen seems to be missing is the increase in size and weight that happened in the iPad 3 (& 4). It simply isn't possible yet to fit a retina with that much resolution into the mini size and weight. That's the killer feature of the mini, it's size and weight.

You know I don't get people who claim that once you go retina you can't go back. I've had the iPhone 4 since it came out and now an iPhone 5 and my mom earlier this year handed me her iPad 2 (no retina). It hasn't bothered me one bit to go from my iPhone to my iPad when it comes to screen quality. In fact what annoys me about my iPad is it is a bit too big for what I want. If I had the money I'd well rather have the mini than the retina display.

Depends on what you are doing. Text on a white background definitely does not look good or even remotely close to a retina display.

Agree. Screen is not great. People normally nit pick but this isn't IMO. The screen is the main point of this device.

No it isn't. Size and portability are the main points.

I fall into the camp of I'd rather it be small and light rather than being retina. If at some point Apple can give me small and light and retina even better. Until then I'm going to enjoy this one.

So I'm guessing every Mac iPad iPhone iPod was half cooked before.. But millions purchased and loved them.

I understand it's not marketed as the best screen on any 7 inch device, but anyone that goes from retina to this mini will quick realize that the text is simply not as sharp.

I mean, this is obviously a mute point as they're EVENTUALLY going to release an iPad mini with retina, but as it stands right now there's a glaring hole.

I love apple products more than most people I know, but this just feels like a huge step backward.

and it is so vital to post the 500th post that this is the case!

we get it...don't buy it....

No!

this is not allowed!!!!

you have to cry and weep that apple has screwed you from the rooftops to be part of the in crowd experts here!

Coming from an iPad 3 and iPhone 5:

Yes, the mini doesn't have the sharpest text, but I've found my eyes are adjusting after 1 day of using it. I had a headache at first, but not now. I sit in front of my iMac every day which has even less ppi, and that hasn't bothered me, so why should this?

It really is the PERFECT size. My thumbs can reach across all of the device in portrait and landscape, and typing feels awesome on it. It's thin, it's light, it's the best tablet out there atm, imo, even with a non-retina screen.

We all know Apple is holding back on retina for the next gen. most likely, but for now, it's really really awesome to hold, and use.

This far and beyond outweighs the weight, un-portability, and screen tinting all of my ipad 3's have had.

Have you adjusted to the screen on the mini yet?

Ipad 3 owner here. I am getting used to it, and it isn't as much of an issue, as it seemed to be when I first got it. Perfect Browser also helps with the text.

Coming from the 3, everything is definitely smaller. The difference in retina and non-retina is very apparent to me, but it's not a deal breaker.

Great point. I think it is obvious that Apple's suppliers have manufacturing issues with the high res screens. It's not just the retina ipad, also the macbook pro. Hopefully that'll change next year with the Sharp displays.

I'm adjusting, wish Apple would allow you to set a minimum font size within at least safari, if not across the board.

Just the small fonts giving me a bit of a hassle, maybe it's time to get my contact script changed.

I mean, this is obviously a mute point

You mean "moot", but god do I wish those repeatedly making this point would be mute already. Trust me, the dead horse now resembles a palmful of fine powder - you can stop beating, okay?

Let's hope so.

I thought a uniform screen was impossible to find anymore; between my iMac, iPad 3, and even iPhone 5. But the minis screen is perfectly uniform, and whites are actually white.

Never had a problem with my iPad 2 either.

I'm thinking they need a new tech. to properly light the high density screens uniformly. Maybe IGZO is it, but we'll have to wait and see.
