silliest thing i've seen. I have an ipad 3 and iphone 5. I got the ipad mini this morning and it's beautiful. The screen is not as good when using a magnifying glass on it, but overwise it's very nice. Great color and viewing angle.

lol!

I watched The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers (both HD) on the mini. While the display was obviously not in HD, it looked great. I have zero issue with this display and Iown all the iPad products that have been released. The mini serves its niche and I suspect will do very well.

No!

this is not allowed!!!!

you have to cry and weep that apple has screwed you from the rooftops to be part of the in crowd experts here!

Chill out dude. Not everyone has said that apple has screwed us. There are some idiots but the majority has just commented that they observed that the non-retina display is a deal breaker. We're not buying it. Apple can release whatever they want and we've voted with our wallets. We'll just wait for the next release. We're not entitled to anything and those that feel that way are just sad people. How is that anything remotely close to "apple has screwed us" rhetoric?

I'd just not the same when it's not retina. I know that it's technically a little better than the ipad 2, but if you've gone retina... It's really tough to go back.

I LOVE how the ipad feels in my hand, but apple really missed the mark on leaving out retina. Whenever apple does decide to release an ipad mini with retina, then they have a real winner. As it stands right now, it just feels like a half baked device.

I agree 100%... I tried to give the mini a chance, but the screen is just horrible. I am keeping my 3 until the retina mini is released.

If you've been squinting at a pixelated, blurry iPad 2 for some time, the Mini is going to look gorgeous to your eyes. If you've been spoiled by the iPad 3's Retina, your eyes will thank you for only a slight downgrade.

Compared to the obsolete iPad 2's display the Mini is stunning.

Am I the only one who's not moaning about Retina display? I'm very happy with the iPad Mini!!

It's a trade off. I've found myself zooming more, and using apps to get my news rather than safari because it seems to be more noticeable in safari than anything else.

The size and weight really was the draw to me, and the reason why I'm keeping it over my 3rd gen ipad.

iPad 2 vs Mini will be an interesting comparison to make at the Apple store. I remember looking at the iPad2 and New iPad and noted the huge difference in display quality. Still sitting on the fence whether to wait for an iPad mini with retina or not.

I completely agree. I have kept trying to use the Mini but I can't bear the screen. To everyone who likes the Mini that's cool.

The market will speak. In a couple months we'll find out how they're selling, what return rates are, etc. My prediction is it'll sell from initial hype then after 1 or 2 months sales will fall off. I also predict higher than normal return rates.

I really wanted to like the Mini so I'm disappointed.

I think apple made the mini to sell to people who can't afford and ipad 3 or 4. So they haven't been spoiled with a retina screen in the first place. I have an iPad 3 and I bought a mini. I really like the mini overall. If I was a photographer showing pictures to clients I would probably elect to have a retina display. But to the average John Doe who can't quite afford an iPad 4, this thing will be spectacular for them.

+1 to all he said

I agree also.. I have the iPad 3, a iPhone 4S, and now the iPad mini. The screen is fine, and it is a great device...

So I'm guessing every Mac iPad iPhone iPod was half cooked before.. But millions purchased and loved them.

That is a tired argument. Of course becuase that was the best tech at that time so they where amazing. Apple is the one that put every other company down by starting this retina display war. So you can see where some people get upset that a iPad, in the year 2012, did not come with a retina display. IMO apple went backwards with the specs. Before I get crussified over talking about specs, let me just say I played with the mini today and liked how snappy it was and how nice it felt in the hands. I was ready to drop 329+ on it but decided not to because if the screen not being retina. I am def. gonna pick up a 2nd gen or will wait for a refurb from apple if its below 300. Like I said, it's nice, but I feel like it was already outdated with it being released this year. I can almost garentee that this Spring we will see a retina mini and that's when I will bite.

Well your Air's screen is inferior to the rMBP.

I carry my Air a lot as I am 24 by 7 on the road , so to me Air is very light and very useful I dont need retina and carry the heavy loads in my bag in between airports .

So lets face it you loose some , you win some each device have their own strength .

Those are my feelings exactly. The only time I reallynotice the non retina display is when im on the web. Smaller text is so much easier to read with a retina display.

Can you really guarantee it? ...or are you just trying to justify the non-purchase? ;) (I haven't bought it myself)

No, your right. I can't guarantee it but I feel like it will be sooner than later. As far as justifying my "non-purchase" I don't think so. If I want to I can buy it whenever I want. I choose to wait til a refurb or more than likely, a 2nd gen Mini. I am a huge Apple fan but I don't drink the kool-aid. In MY opinion, and my opinion alone, the mini without a retina is a no go for me at $329 because I feel like I would get buyer's remorse. I like to think about my purchases before buying. Impulse buying is a terrible thing.

In terms of perceived display quality, and that's all that matters, resolution is I believe the 4th most important thing.
It's black level, contrast ratio, color balance, and then resolution.
Apple excels at the first 3 (vs the competition).
The resolution could be better, but I've seen the nexus 7 and while the screen overall is good, I could instantly tell that it's not as good as an ipad 2's.
It just isn't. You can tell when watching movies. If i put a number on it, I'd say it's about 15-20% worse. Again, nexus 7, good if not great for the money. And the same song and dance continues with an Android nexus product. You always hear the comment that the nexus 7 screen is good for the money, the tablet is good for the money. When will they say that it's just good, even if it cost the same as an iPad?
It does not seem that the nexus 7 would sell at all if it was $329. And that's fine and dandy, b/c Apple is trying to create an ipad mini segment--the 7 incher affordable luxury class.

If the mini's profit margin is lower than most, then we can't really fault Apple too much yet. A retina display just costs too much right now. In one year, this is when you want to get the mini. But it is curious that an ipad mini costs so much given its A5 internals as well and low res screen. I suspect that Apple's margins are still very high.

Same here, weight and size. And coming from iPad1 I have no complaints about speed or the screen. But the font is awfully small in Safari, in landscape, as I am not even considering browsing in portrait. Never did on the gen1 either.

I don't really want to to get perfect Browser or whatever else, so maybe zooming is the best option. Unless there is a miracle of having font-options in Safari.

The text are too small and pixelated for the mini when reading in portrait.

Double tap and zoom to reduce strain in your eyes.

Otherwise in landscape position evertything seem normal and ok to read without producing so much strain in your eyes..

I agree people are making to much over the screen, sold my ipad 3 and glad I did, the mini is awesome.

For the ppl who want retina would u trade 6 hrs battery life for retina? Theres gotta be a prototype they had with this but cost was prob an issue. Hopefully igzo will help

Guys, the screen is retina. Your just looking at it wrong!

Seriously though, the "screen is not as good" comment is stupid. It's half the resolution. Duh. I think Josh Topolsky said it best. If these devices were just about the screen then he'd by a nook hd. But they are not. It's hardware, software, use cases and most importantly the app ecosystem.

I understand people comparing to larger iPad if they are looking at it as a replacement. And it may be hard to give up the bigger one since all those other factors are almost the same on both devices so screen can become major differentiator. To each his own on that. But from a market perspective this device is second to none. The blend of portability, feel, hardware and ecosystem is amazing. And the screen is great. Spent most of yesterday reading a book and reading my newspapers online.

Whether you can deal with a screen downgrade if you are looking to replace is different although I will say like anything else, you should give yourself more than 5 mins at the store to make that decision.
