... Is Apple a BS company that takes advantage of it's fans, you bet ya. Do they put out devices that are intentionally less than they could be so upgrading is an option in a year, you know they do. ...

I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means but I disagree with you. Do you think they could have put a lightning connector and an A6X chip on the iPad 3 when they launched it? Why delay it if they are doing it now for the same price?

A more reasonable assumption is that it just wasn't ready. Apple didn't get to where it's at by taking advantage of its customers. They are putting out the best products that they can and doing an awesome job in the process. The competition is in their rear view mirror.

And this from a former Windows guy...

My guess is once the mini delivers and folks get one in their hand.
50% of posts here will claim the screen is no good.
50% will claim it's fine.
50% will claim the speed is slow.
50% will claim it's fine.
50% will claim it's too small
50% will claim it's too big.

You're naming specific things. The person you quoted didn't. How do you know what specific features or devices he was talking about?

Ok, I'm sick of the complaints about the specs.

There is literally ONE spec that will be noticeable and that's the iPad Mini missing the Retina Display.

I've watched side by side test of the iPhone 4, 4S, and 5...they are very minimally different/quicker. Yeah the A6 processor may be TWICE as fast as the A5 processor...but if the A6 takes 1/4 of a second to do something it takes 1/2 a second on the A5. So OMG it's twice as fast...but nothing significant. And if 1/4 of a second is that big of a deal in your life you probably shouldn't be on this forum wasting more of your so important time.

There are so many whiny brat "nerds" on this forum that act like these specs are so awful and so bad...but if they had an iPad Mini with an A5 processor right next to an iPad Mini with an A6 processor and couldn't do a side by side test...but play around with it for a couple minutes then use the other one...I guarantee you no one would TRULY be able to tell the difference and guess at which one was quicker.

I'm bummed there isn't a Retina Display because that's noticeable to the eye...but now that you've READ the specs on the Mini it is now an "out of date" product. Get over yourselves and get out of here if you don't like it. Has that much changed in ONE year that the processor in the 4S (which now runs in the Mini) is now SO OUT OF DATE?

No...it's not out of date to you...but on "technical" terms it is.

Seriously, get over yourselves.

You're just trying to justify Apple's low standards.

I don't see them as complaints, it's just people expressing thoughts & opinions based on experience, preferences or both. Without this feedback, products would never improve.
To some people, anything that isnt overtly positive is considered "whining". Its partially funny and partially pathetic because these people are just as defensive about Apple as they would be about their grandmother.

Jony Ive boasts about starting from the beginning with the Mini and then filled it with recycled parts that are now two generations old and lacks the "resolutionary" screen that people out here couldnt shut up about 7mo ago. To be angry that people notice is ridiculous.

BTW. I bought two because I dont mind the outdated specs. BUT, if it doesnt perform as expected for a 2012-2013 device then I have every right to say it without someone giving me a lecture about proper etiquette for discussing Apple products.

Can someone explain to me why Apple in their official video of the iPad Mini can say specifically that the iPad Mini can be used with one hand, but also claim that any competitor's screens that are larger than the iPhone 5's cannot be used one handed?

Check out the video on the Apple website. The one that starts with Ive talking. At around the 2 min mark. They say specifically using it with one hand; not just holding it with one hand.

Why is no one else calling them out on this? Can someone explain the disparity of this?

You're just trying to justify Apple's low standards.

I don't see how you can call Apple's standards "low."

I have an iPad 3 and a Nexus 7. I like both for what they offer, but I would say the Nexus 7 has by far the lower standards of the two... and this is supposed to be the flagship Android tablet.

And this is across the board, Jelly Bean, while improved in many respects, still lacks polish, cohesion and that "we actually thought this through" type feeling. The apps for the Nexus 7 are, for the most part, subpar, in both usability and aesthetics. An example is the CNBC app... everything's seemingly mashed together in portrait and stuff doesn't format properly. Build quality, the Nexus creaks in different ways even though there is no removable battery or SD card slot, some say it's the screen lifting from the body and others say it may just be the plasticky back. And let's not even start with Google's non-existent customer service.

Either way, I know which company is more OK with the lower standards, and that's Google. That's not where they make their money, so it's understandable.

P.S. I really do like the Nexus 7, but without a doubt there are noticeable compromises that you make with the lower price point. I'm sure the iPad mini comes with compromises too (less RAM, lower resolution, higher price than Nexus 7) but I think the idea is to bang out the product where the customer perceives the fewest amount of compromises for a reasonable price.

Likely based on general usage patterns of phones vs. tablets. Flipping a page on a book/scrolling on the browser vs. texting on a phone. My friend has a Galaxy Note and to do regular phone functions on that device is impossible one handed, dialing, texting, etc., but flipping through a book is fine.

But I'm sure there are plenty of inconsistencies in Apple marketing. It seems like every computer is "The best Mac we've ever created..."

I get what you mean, but let me play devil's advocate: iMessage comes with the iPad, and I presume will with the iPad Mini. Whether it's over WiFi or 4G, Apple fully expects people to text on iPads.

I guess my point is, now Apple's parsing out what it considers is applicable one handed use? I guess so, but I feel these are more than just marketing inconsistencies. One of the major justifications for the 4" screen of the iPhone 5 and one of the major selling points (they have an ad specifically to highlight one handed use of the iPhone that implies anything larger can't) is the all-important one hand use.

This is just one of the harder things to swallow from Apple. Just feels so false and disingenuous.

At least with the Mac, if they truly think each generation is the best, and the next one is better, well, I guess it makes sense to call that the greatest Mac ever. I buy that (and it's no surprise I love their macs).

It´s sort of true. iPad 2 had 132PPI but the iPad mini has 163PPI due to the smaller screen size

Also it has a different type of display that makes the image higher quality.

Not quite sure what exactly, though. Something about the image being on top of something. I don't know.

I suppose some people are also concerned whether using a 2 gen old chip (counting A5X) would also cut short the lifespan of future iOS update support on the iPad mini.
Exactly. There are already games that look better on A6 chip. Try Wild Blood. Character's armour details are way beyond than what is seen on A5 chip.

no its a budget 7 inch tablet. The nexus 10 is the flagship device

I'd weight it a bit more heavily on the negative side, but only because people with a problem tend to be more vocal

I'd give more weight to the negative as they tend to be more vocal, but agree that your never going to make everyone happy.

Visually you can SEE the Retina Display and the redesign...you can't really SEE the differences in the chips and specs until you read about them.

A retina display requires more CPU/GPU/RAM power then a non retina screen. So if you throw in a retina screen without upgrading the SoC and system memory as well you will SEE a decrease in performance compared to the same spec iPad with a non retina screen. All without having to READ about it.

+ don't forget the retina screen and the stronger hardware would drain battery life really hard. if you want to make small and thin devices, you'll always have to compromise. i would have loved to see a retina ipad mini and i probably would have bought it but i guess it's not possible atm

I will get the mini without a retina screen, because the size and weight will suit me much better than my full sized 3. I will consider upgrading when it gets the retina screen IF they don't add too much thickness or weight to it. I am more than happy to get this lighter version. I also have very little doubt the performance and user experience will be will be every bit my as good as my other apple products. If I can only keep my eyes from bleeding from the lack of retina.

It will probably be a lot heavier and thicker unless battery technology takes a huge leap forward in the next 12 months.

The Nexus 7 at $300 and a fraction of the size is not an iPad competitor. It is a budget tablet. Of course it doesn't seem as well designed as the iPad.

We shouldn't be comparing the Nexus 7 to the Mini either, but sadly we are, because it has better specs, even though it was released several months ago. Sure, the IPad Mini is undoubtedly a more beautiful device on the outside, and Ives deserves credit for that, but as another poster said, they filled it with old parts. It is a shame, and our "complaining" is just calling Apple out for trying to sell a sub-standard product as a premium one. We deserve better.

There are all sorts of inconsistencies here in Apple's marketing, and I think objective observers will have long ago noticed that Apple's statements are internally inconsistent and don't fit reality outside the Appleverse either. Normally, i don't care, because they still make a lot of the best stuff. However, in this case they're clearly selling us a compromised product (like Maps as well) that shouldn't be so much worse than the competition.

I want Apple to make products that are better than the competition's, and I am willing to pay more to have a great experience. The Mini and Maps, though, are weak, and Apple deserves the criticism. They need to get their act together.

Yeah using it with one hand is obviously wrong. You can only hold it with one hand. The iPhone is the only phone IMO that you can touch every part of the screen and USE with one hand. The SG3 is just too big to touch all parts of the screen with my thumb. All this is IMO btw.

That is SO true. It's like how a small child defends their mother their mother. "you said something that wasn't nice about mommy, you're mean!'

Apple is a company worth billions that charges a premium for their product. They should be held to a high standard even by people who like their products. Every criticism shouldn't be dismissed as whining or trolling.

Not every decision that Apple makes is great (like the Maps fiasco). And if customers don't express their opinion or more effectively vote with their wallet, there is little incentive for Apple to change.

No retina is not a flaw. First of all the thing would cost even more, and it wouldn't be out this year. Second, it's not necessary. Buy the full size iPad if that's what you want. And if you're going to complain or compare, wait for benchmarks and actual side by side testing. Bitching about the specs of an Apple product is ridiculous.

Telling others to 'get over themselves' because their opinion differs from your own is lame and does nothing to support your argument.

This.

Personally, I'm not interested in a smaller iPad, and now even less so as I consider the mini to be underspec'd. However, it will be the right device for a lot of people. No need to dictate either way what people should think about it.

Agreed, but it's a typical consumer behaviour. He loves iPad mini so he doesn't want to have any doubts about he's newly preordered iDevice. That's why he's whining about the whiners, not really letting any other arguments than positive. All to make himself good about the purchase and that he's made the right decition.

Yes, I don't know about the OP in particular, but this is what a lot of posts on these forums look like. When the iPad 3gen came out, it was pages after pages about how not having retina was just impossible and the 2gen was basically outdated. Now, all of a sudden, no retina is no big deal at all and the device is wonderful. You have to wonder where all of that comes from.
