Font on the mini is too small for me in Safari - and I know, landscape solves it but still. iPad Air 2 and now Pro 9.7 is my perfect tab.

I've had the Mini 4 since its release and added the Pro97 recently to try...

I'm having much difficulty deciding between them.

As a former user of the 12.9" iPad Pro, 9.7" iPad Pro (purchased this past weekend but returned an hour ago), and iPad Air 2, I find myself constantly going back to the iPad Mini as my main portable iPad computing device. Though the updates and announcements are almost a footnote at this point for Apple, I really do think that its a marvel of a device for its ability to:
1. Show the same amount of content as the 9.7" iPads (albeit scaled down in size)
2. Have a keyboard that is actually quite easy to type quickly on with the thumbs due to ease of reachability for each key
3. Fit in one hand and be able to be gripped. There's something about holding it that feels like holding a smaller moleskine notebook that really does contain all of the data that's important to you (dropbox, ebooks, videos, the web).

Not trying to start a negative campaign on the other iPads here, just very curious to get personal thoughts from folks who love their iPad Minis for the same reason as I do, or those that feel it's compromised and/or cramped when compared to the other iPads in the lineup.

I love iPad mini since it was first time released. I had first mini, mini 2, then updated to mini 4 last year, still loving it.

I have 12.9" iPad Pro also, and using it for digital sketchbook. Since I don't use attachable keyboard with is, it's big and bit heavier but still acceptable to bring around if I know I'll be working on my digital art/photoediting or composing music at cafe or else.
But otherwise, mini 4 is my to go first choice for daily as well. I don't need 9.7", that is still little too big to carry around daily basis, and too small to work on for drawing digital or creating music.

My big wish is though, next mini(if it's still upgrading from current mini 4), having Apple Pencil support. Then it's gonna be much comfortable and convenient, I can bring mini and Apple Pencil for daily and can doodle tiny pieces anywhere when I feel like to do so. Make PNGs and transfer to iPad Pro, then I can go further step to complete a big piece as well.

I absolutely agree with you about its size. My hand is tiny, still I can hold it by my one hand. Size, weight, everything is just right as "portable" device. Somehow mini "fits" in your one hand.
The experience reading eBooks on mini is another thing I love too. And that size, I don't feel too much hesitatation when I'm checking emails in public :)

iPad Mini + Pencil is what I really want.

I'm worried that Apple isn't going to put pencil support on the next Mini. And that's a shame because (IMO) Pencil support is far more practical than 3D Touch.

I know people will argue against that but the pencil is an optional accessory that has huge profit margins so it would make sense for Apple to put it on all future iOS devices.

I agree. I think that Pencil support would be a much more useful addition to the Mini than 3D Touch.

Don't worry, there'll be a 7.9 Pro soon enough. ;)

I'm actually kind of worried that Apple is going to kill the mini completely.

I go for the Mini size every time, having been setting up my Mums new iPad Pro 9.7" it is just too big for me, when I go to the shops, as I am yet to get an iPad Mini for myself, I always have a play and the games they have on it are always much better on the iPad Mini for me. I just prefer the smaller size.

Why? They are not going to kill it off rest assured. How many people said the same thing of the iPod Touch on here? A LOT, and look what happened and it sells less then the iPad Mini does, I think.

Without a doubt the Mini sells more than the iPod Touch. I posted some data a while ago that confirmed that the Mini 2 & 4 combined for more sales than the Air 1 & 2 last holiday season. I don't know if the Mini line will see major updates every year, but I doubt it's being killed off any time soon.

When I had regular sized iPad, I was constantly upgrading from the 1st gen through the 4th gen. Once Apple released the retina mini 2, I bought it, sold my iPad 4, and been using the mini 2 till now. It's the perfect size to take with me all the time. Heck, if Apple put phone capability on the mini, I would probably stop carrying my iPhone.

Adding pencil support would be awesome.

My first iPad was the original mini, and this past Christmas I purchased the Air 2. Lately I find myself missing the mini though, and have been thinking about picking up the mini 4. Don't think I will make the purchase, because I'm saving up for a 2016 rMB or rMBP :D

I have always loved the mini form factor. My wife was still on the mini 1, so I gave her my mini 3 when I upgraded to the iPad Pro. We were watching a video on the mini 3 just a few hours ago, and I have to admit, I miss that little guy. I just don't miss it as much as I love my new one. ;)

Had a Mini 2 which I sold and bought a Mini 4 last fall. Both great devices but the 4 was definitely worth the upgrade for the extra ram and better color gamut. It's the perfect size for me since it's mostly used for reading in bed, watching videos at the gym and entertaining me on flights or when travelling. For real work I'll take out a laptop so I like that my entertainment device is very portable.

"Pro" is just a marketing term. People need to realize that it doesn't mean or even imply anything about specs aside from what the company in question wants it to mean.

People keep saying, "how can they only offer 2GB of RAM and still call this Pro?!" As if the word "Pro" is somehow synonymous with a certain level of RAM.

Would you be happy if a Macbook came with the same specs as a Macbook "PRO"? When it is bigger, more expensive and when they call it a "PRO' I would hope that they would offer a little more "RAM" to the consumers. RAM is very cheap these days so it should not be too much to ask for. They could also offer some models with just 2GB of RAM for those that do not care much for the extra RAM.

It's not like it doesn't have other significant upgrades over the previous model. If Apple had just called it the Air 3 there would be so many fewer complaints in this forum. All it is is the successor to the Air 2. Whatever three letters they want to put in the name are just marketing.

What does a news story about slowing smartphone sales have to do with the iPad?
And Apple is not cost cutting, it is giving you all you need, I bet 4GB ram in a 9.7" device would make negligible difference for 90% of users.
iPad sales slowed too so if manufactures were cutting cost due slowing smartphone sales when tablets sales were slowing and sold less when compared to smartphones then it makes sense that the same theory could be applied to tablet sales like the iPad.

We saw this with the release of the new iPhone 6se where cost measures were taken to keep cost down.

I like Apple and their products so don't get me wrong. I have an iPhone 6s Plus,IPad Mini 2 and a 13" MacBook Pro. When I upgrade after a couple of years or so I hope that my new iPad does not have just 1 more Gigabyte of RAM where it is similar to their new lower priced iPhone 6se.

Desktop>Laptop>Tablet>Smartphone

I love reading forum members' feedback on their iPad use and preferences. Great community!

Up until release day for the iPad Pro 9.7", I used my iPad Mini 2 frequently. Love the form factor, albeit a bit heavy with the Otterbox, but that's not Apple's fault. One-handed ease of use most of the time, portable and decent battery life were my likes with the Mini 2.

At first, the A7 seemed quick but not too long after purchasing I began to notice some pronounced stutter when scrolling webpages, particularly Amazon. I prefer Safari on my mobile devices and while I do have Chrome on them, Safari simply runs and looks better in my opinion.

The stutter became so bad that when I gave my wife her new iPad Pro 9.7" I knew I'd be purchasing one soon. This past Thursday I picked up an iPad Pro 9.7" and am selling my Mini 2.

I'm wondering how Apple will proceed with the Mini line. I think it's time to drop in a fast processor with plenty of RAM and perhaps introduce a "Pro" line with that segment.

I had a Mini 2. Loved it. But no Pencil support. So when the 9.7 Pro came out, I got that and gave the Mini 2 to my wife. The Pro is bigger and takes a bit of time to get used to again (my last "big" iPad was the iPad 2) but I really like it and the the ability to sketch and draw--yay for Procreate! I think a Mini with Pencil support would maybe be too small. At least for drawing. Note taking might be good though.

And to the people complaining about RAM amount in the Pro.... pro means Pencil and Smart Keyboard support, not RAM. Besides, 2GB works very well. No complaints here.

Yes sales may have slowed down, but it is an assumption to say Apple are reducing costs due to that. In fact it shows you don't know Apple? They have NEVER done what the market wants, including stuffing oodles of RAM into devices, they only use 2GB now because all the iOS features they have.
The iPhone SE is not cost cutting either, they used the same iPhone 5 design because it's a classic design people love, why change it? In fact I think the Mac Pro is the only totally new design they have ever made in recent times, bar the iPhone. But their other devices don't really change.
And the SE has the latest spec internals, the exact same as the 6S, that's not cost cutting either.

So I do not buy the argument Apple is 'cost cutting' one bit, they don't need to and don't do it.

My iPad history: iPad 2 -> iPad 3 -> iPad Mini -> (iPad Air then when launched iPad Mini 2 together) -> (iPad Air 2 then recently iPad Mini 4 together)

Use the Mini 4 as my daily driver. Don't notice any difference in performance from the Air 2. I went into the Apple store to check out the big iPP on launch and left with the mini 4 lol.

The people complaining about the lack of 4GB RAM are the ones complaining about the lack of 2GB RAM a few months ago.

The iPad Mini 4 is by far the best versitile tablet on the market. It's the perfect screen size for portability, taking notes, and light weight is perfect. I have a full size iPad but prefer my mini. Heck even watching movies on it seems better especially when traveling, it feels more personal.

I use to have a iPad Mini 4 but found it to small.

Though I still liked it.

Do you find yourself using the mini quite a bit even though you have an iPhone? I originally had the mini 1, but it's pretty slow now so it's not used. Picked up an air 2 over th holidays, but find myself missing the mini form factor.
