Sorry, but I don't follow your logic here.

The new rMini has the same processor as the 5S and iPad Air. Additionally, Schiller claims that it has the same 10-hour battery life as the first Mini.

With all of that in mind, how is this iPad 3 all over again? If the rMini is handicapped, then so too are the 5S and the Air as they have the same specs?

Your logic is flawed if you believe that.. The Air has more physical space for a bigger battery to power a high-res retina LCD.. It was the reason why the iPad3/4 was thicker was to accomodate the Retina res.. Sure they may be using IGZO or similar technology now and the A7 is also more power efficient. Anyways thats not my beef.. even though I get almost 20 hours usage on my Mini Gen1. I doubt the new one with Retina can do the same anymore and that's a negative to me. Design is my beef now, going backwards even if it's slight is just depressing.

My GF could tell the difference between the 2 and 3 on a consistent basis, just by picking them up. She prefered using the 2, as well. Maybe I should have got her weight training certificates for Christmas...

Clint

That's why I've still got my 2 after trying both the 3 and 4.

Both me and my wife could tell the extra heft of the later models and didn't like it. Small difference maybe but there all the same and uncomfortable to people that notice it.

My HTC One is exactly one ounce heavier than a 5s, and it definitely feels heavier. I have a TPU case for the HTC that weighs .95oz, and it definitely feels heavier with the case on. Whether it's enough to keep anyone from buying it is beyond me. If a larger footprint isn't a problem, the much lighter iPad Air (hate that name!), looks nice. It's also available sooner.

question is is it so much thicker that old mini cases wont fit? internet points to whoever knows the answer

Probably Will NOT fit the thin backplate cases for the original mini.

Probably WILL fit any case that has a little give. It is only .3 mm difference after all. But still enough that if it was a tight squeeze for the original, it probably won't fit the Retina Mini.

Plus don't forget about the second mic hole.

Looks like 3mm, not .3mm thicker. That would definitely make snap on case makers happy.

7.2mm and 7.5mm respectively.

That's .3mm

If it were 7.5cm thick, then yes it would have been 3mm.

The snap-ons still most likely won't fit, as they are pretty exact. Plus they don't have the second mic hole.

So they'll still be happy.

Yeah, if you think I was complaining about the internals you couldn't be more wrong for trying to call me out on it. Go re-read my posts with your Apple defender turned off.

It's not that we're iSheep so much as you're an insufferable person. Seriously, you're gonna get on this forum right after the announcement and talk about how this is a dealbreaker for you? And then you blame the "iSheep" for your melodrama? The kind of people who do that usually have no redeemable social qualities. I realize that's a little harsh considering the subject matter, but there's little other explanation for your behavior other than you're just intolerant.

But that's okay, we get to go on with our day feeling content with the new products Apple announced. You're the one who has to live with yourself.

And you've proven to have more time on your hands than I do ranting about how you know me so well? Please type another novel.

I was downloading Mavericks while looking at the specs. Sorry about that. I'll have to go back for an overall closer look.

Well they said in the Keynote that they had to decrease the battery size of the iPad Air in order to create that form factor. So technically, both the iPad Mini retina, and iPad Air should have worse performance than their predecessors haha. But yeah, definitely the iPad Mini Retina's will be decreased a bit more. Should still last longer than the iPad Air though, given the screen is smaller

----------

was there a date on the ipad mini air being released?

They officially said "later this November". I'm guessing that means like November 12-15ish

The screen is smaller, but it's GPU is driving more pixels. That alone will drain the battery more.

Ahhh, the "You're a bigger loser than I am because you're participating in this conversation" response. Have fun with that one.

The Air also has to a power a larger screen, the majority of battery life is due to the screen. Again your logic fails.

Yet everything you said was basically wrong. Battery life isn't worst.

A smaller screen still requires significantly less to power the actual screen, and that is what uses a big portion of the power.

----------

I should point out the Retina Ipad Mini has a significantly larger battery than the Ipad Mini 1, around 50% larger. This should help with battery life.

Source on larger battery in Retina Mini?

ehh

LED backlighting is pretty power efficient.

The GPU and CPU are what suck the power.

Yes the larger iPad will use more LEDS thus power to light the bigger screen, but that A7 GPU is going to be maxing itself out to drive all those pixels on the Retina Minis screen.

I bet games will suffer on the mini v.s. the Air because of this.

I was asking. So it's not yet known? Just got home and didn't get to see the reveal.
All dimensions are the same except for the thickness. You can verify this on Apple's website (iPad comparison page; compare the dimensions of the first-generation iPad mini with the retina iPad mini).

Well they said in the Keynote that they had to decrease the battery size of the iPad Air in order to create that form factor. So technically, both the iPad Mini retina, and iPad Air should have worse performance than their predecessors haha.
This would be a fair assertion to make if both iPads were using the same processors as their predecessors. The A7 is a more power-efficient chip than the A6 or A5, which is how it can perform better without requiring much more power. We'll have to wait for real-world benchmarks before we can say whether there's truly any hit to battery life, though.
