Apple is working on a revamped version of the iPad mini that will feature the first design update the smaller-sized tablet has seen in six years, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

The updated iPad mini will feature narrower screen bezels, with Apple also testing a design that does away with the Home button. We've heard several prior rumors about Apple's work on a new version of the iPad mini, which could feature a display that measures in at 8.5 to 9 inches, a notable increase from the current 7.9-inch display.

Images of an iPad mini dummy model even leaked earlier this year, though it is not clear if that dummy model was accurate as it did feature a Home button.

In addition to a new iPad mini, Apple is also working on a thinner version of the low-cost entry-level iPad that's aimed at students, with both the iPad mini and the new low-cost iPad planned for "as early as the end of this year."

Bloomberg's report also highlighted a new iPad Pro coming in 2022 that could feature MagSafe wireless charging capabilities as well as the ability to reverse charge other wireless devices.

Although not having such wide bezels gives you more room for viewing and working with content, perhaps the reason why the bezels on the mini have been as wide as they have been is because that makes it easier to hold.

Keeping the iPad Mini around to ensure devs design for a smaller iPad style display that will eventually find its way onto the foldable iPhone.

This will make a great DJI drone controller display. Drone users love the iPad Mini and having a bigger display in a similar size will be quite welcome. I currently use my iPhone 12 Pro Max which is decent since I'm only using a DJI Mini 2. I might pick up one of these if I upgrade to the DJI Pro 3 next year to better see what I'm shooting, especially since I'm thinking about going back to the regular sized iPhone Pro when the 13 comes out.

A 9” iPad Mini with a similar design to Pro and Air 4 sounds very appealing, especially if it keeps or increases its current ppi of 326. They will probably move it to OLED later on as well. So there will be the Pros with mini-LED, Air and Mini with OLED and entry iPads with LCD. Sounds good to me.

Argh. They both look like they will come out when I’m looking to upgrade. iPad mini or new, thinner iPad regular. I think it will be a win whichever way I go. I’m stoked that they appear to be investing in these two important versions of the iPad.

I love this idea except I’m not expecting the mini to be OLED but I’m hoping!

Holy ****ing ****. Finally.

Hell, had they done this years ago and kept upped the screen tech (or, hell, just kept the CPU in line) I'd have bought one and probably upgraded again by now.

It's so obvious that 8 to 9 inch territory is ideal for consumption. I assume this is also why it received so little attention. The focus has been on iPad Pros as bona fide laptop replacements for the masses.

Looking forward to a beautiful, more affordable iPad without extra gizmos like lidar-scanner or reverse charging etc
LOL. More affordable? Apple increased the iPad Air price when they updated it to the Air 4. Expect the same with this mini. Apple wants to ensure that the pheasants kept using devices with outdated hardware (the current base iPad doesn’t even have Bluetooth 5, it’s stuck with Bluetooth 4.2), to differentiate the classes of people using their products. That’s a reason why the Pro lineup keep going up in price.

I sure hope so. The mini is an absolutely underrated device. I love mine to death. It’s the perfect complement to my MacBook Pro.

An updated model with a bigger Liquid Retina display, Lock Button Touch ID, Pencil 2 support, stereo speakers, and an A14 would be my dream iPad.
