Looking forward to it. I really hope it will have 1080p@60fps video recording. I think it would be about time to iPad mini to have that. The iPhone has had it since iPhone 6 (2014).

Well your take is wrong.

The iPad mini has been on the verge of discontinuation since the day it was first produced. Receiving the fewest updates of any iPad. It just barely justifies its own existence, which is the only reason why it still has one. It is much like iPhone mini which is likewise a product Apple was pressured to make by loud whining voices, who failed to materialize into a market. If not for the fact that the design was a 2 year bet there wouldn't even be an iPhone 13 mini, but there will be, and after that it will fade away.

I'll believe this one when I see it. It may be that some aspect of the R&D that went into making the new iPad Air has enabled them to make a new mini for a low cost, but again, I'll believe it when I see it. Near worthless product that isn't good at anything.
Actually the only thing that will be fading away is your comment, which is worthless btw.

Much as I would rather and be completely content with a continuation of the same iPad mini 4/5th Generation iPad mini design but with upgraded internals, I really don't think it makes ANY sense for them to move the iPad Air to the 2018-current iPad Pro design and for them to NOT do that with the iPad mini, assuming Apple's goal is to continue selling an iPad mini. Also, you don't go to such lengths to NOT put Face ID into this thing and to instead completely engineer, from the bottom up, an entirely new post-home-button Touch ID system only to JUST have it on one model of iPad. The only iPad I can see retaining the old body style for any serious length of time past this point is the standard iPad. But I'd imagine that, after the ninth generation, it too will make the jump. Typically Apple doesn't take THIS long to transition body styles on products.
No the under-display Touch ID is the future for Apple in that lower price point for devices like the iphone and ipad.

It's likely for the iPhone and unlikely for the iPad. Apple isn't going to engineer that kind of a Touch ID system and make THAT big of a deal over it only to use it in one product.

iPad mini?? Sure, that may be true in your world but it isn’t necessarily true in others’ worlds. As another poster astutely stated, the iPad mini fits perfectly into my particular work flow. The larger Pro(and downward) screens don’t.
While I disagree that it isn’t good at anything, I take your point that iPad mini, so far, isn’t an inspired device especially that it comes from a company that frequently does inspired devices.

Absolutely loved my first iPad mini. I upgraded to the original iPad Pro (and have loved it), but I defiantly miss the size of the mini. It was perfect for video and reading—even in bed since it was so light—and served as a great notepad for school and work. If it's got the same-ish footprint as the current mini and includes Apple Pencil 2 support, I'll likely nab one.

agreed (though for me the pencil isn’t a need). I’ve had my mini 4 for 4+ years. It’s my go to for chill time reading and videos as well as light work. it’s the light-small device I take on the go when I need a bit more screen than my IP11. A new mini will be a buy for me — when it becomes available through the Apple refurb store 😀.

Why does the mini cost more than the base iPad?

while it may seem (and often is) that bigger version of a similar device must be more expensive, this isn’t a certainty. Manufacturing can be a strange beast (I worked at Apple’s factory in California wayyyyy long time ago). When you sell more of X, you generate enough to tool extra mfg lines, increase efficiency, reduce parts cost through greater bulk discount buying.
Additionally, what something is sold for is usually based only on what people will pay for it. See Bitcoin for the purest form of this reality.

Apple does like fat margins. Just make it on someone else’s dime. I like low prices. :D
Buy the next to latest version after trade in or secondary market sale — or go refurbished. Otherwise, if you’re waiting on the low cost product range to be filled by Apple it’s gonna be a loooong wait (seriously, the day Apple starts trying to fill the low cost segment of the market? They might as well become one of the many that sells vacuum cleaners, electric toothbrushes and coffee makers).

My general point was I don't want to be paying more for a new mini than I did the min5.

Jeez...I wish we had fixed release dates for Apple products. I need an iPad something now - and this would be a lock. So how long do we have to wait?!!

LOL. More affordable? Apple increased the iPad Air price when they updated it to the Air 4. Expect the same with this mini. Apple wants to ensure that the pheasants kept using devices with outdated hardware (the current base iPad doesn’t even have Bluetooth 5, it’s stuck with Bluetooth 4.2), to differentiate the classes of people using their products. That’s a reason why the Pro lineup keep going up in price.
I think it's pretty great. There's an iPad there for everyone.

(I would like a "Pro mini". And I guess others might like a 13-inch Air. But that's about it.)

It's a pity that Apple don't allow streaming gaming services on iOS, because that would make the rumoured new iPad mini a killer gaming device (with a gamepad of course). I'm looking forward to see it in person. I had the first mini and loved it at that time. The problem is that it was released already with outdated hardware (iPad 2, 512M ram) and finally decided to update it to a bigger one. Mi 2017 pro is starting to age so maybe I do the jump back to the mini unless is crazily priced.

It will be also interesting to see how many of them they will sell after the poor sales of the mini version of the iPhone.

Not even accounting for the global skyrocketing inflation? Basic products and services have gone up quite a bit, even the US minimum wage has increased significantly in most states (compared to a couple years ago). I'd wager that inflation has raised the prices of at least some computer parts.

With every year, a single dollar buys you less and less. There may even come a time when the joke meme coin Doge will outvalue the US $1 dollar.
