Current lineup starting prices:
Base iPad: $329
iPad mini 5: $399
iPad Air 4: $599
I don't think consumers are attracted to the iPad mini 5, since it's smaller and more expensive than the base iPad with the same A12 chip (ignoring storage). So it makes sense for Apple to refresh the mini into a mini6, starting at $499. That way, the differentiation is clearer (older design, cheap. Newer design, premium).

Look amazing, but also very interest in the signs of a budget iPad upgrade.

Honestly, with the rumored budget iPad upgrades to Air design and screen, A13 and likely pencil2 support. This should make the budget iPad the default iPad recommendation perfect for most people. With the iPad Mini the choice for extra portability and the ipad Pro for demanding tasks and specific needs. And the ipad Air left as the awkward middle child that does really fit in anymore. Hence, I believe Apple will move back to a three category iPad product line

I doubt the budget iPad would get a makeover anytime soon. It just got an update to an A12. It will be like the AppleTV/iPod touch, where Apple would just keep it at the minimum supported hardware they have in volume. Remember that the budget iPad still retains the original iPad Air design from back in 2013, without even laminated screen like the Air 2. Maybe in two years time, while refreshing the hardware to an A14, but imo not sooner.

The mini 2 was fine. The worst one was the mini 3, which is literally just a mini 2 with TouchID, nothing more, and it got an increase in numeral.
No the mini 2 had a massively reduced color gamut. This wasnt fixed until the mini 3.

Maybe, but the article specificallly mentions the a budget iPad upgrade and macrumors own page references a 2021 upgrade is expected.

Just give me an iPad Pro Mini already.
I don't think Apple would do an iPad Pro mini now. Apple wanted the Pro lineup to have a much higher price points, to differentiate the lux users from the pheasants. Having a mini pro would disrupt that price difference since it cannot be more expensive than the 11" Pro, which still sits on $799. Maybe on the next refresh of the Pro, where I can see Apple increasing the 11" Pro to $899 or even $999, trickling mini LED to it. Then we can see and iPad mini pro taking up the $799 price point.

Apple could simply just slip in an A13 in it and call it a day. They have to maintain differentiation. If the $329 iPad looks as good as the $599 Air 4, most people would just get the base iPad. This is not Apple's way. :)

Pinch me I must be dreaming. To think after selling my iPad mini 4, I was almost ready to buy a iPad Pro.

That thought has now passed, and my wallet will be bust with two epic upgrades the 16” MacBook Pro and now the iPad mini.

True, but imo consumers in that segment getting that wouldn't even notice it. They just want a cheaper smaller iPad for their kids to play with.

I don't think it would be OLED. It's too expensive for the price point, and even the more expensive Air 4 and Pros don't have OLED. I bet it will be the same "Liquid Retina" as the Air 4. But yeah, expect a price jump because it looks newer.
That seems more likely. The OLED rumor doesn’t make sense to me.

I’d rather the device get smaller than the screen get bigger. Why do all mobile devices almost always eventually get bigger and almost never smaller? Reminds me of cars. New compact models keep getting bigger until they become full size sedans. Wagon models keep getting bigger until they become mini SUVs. And mini SUVs keep getting bigger until they become full SUVs.

Oh thank God. Apple finally sold out of the overstock bezels from 2015. Thank you SO much to everyone who bought one from a Best Buy kiosk at an airport when you really didn’t want one but it was the same price as two magazines and a sandwich! We can FINALLY get a new design now!

I would rather believe no iPadMini update this year. iPad mini and iPhone SE are backup models if the mainline sold bad, which is not the case right now.

I hope it’s true that the 6th Gen iPad mini will finally look like an iPad that belongs in the year 2021, a smaller version of the iPad Air 4. I’ll definitely buy it and I hope it’s available in sky blue.
