Dude who says the "same" refers to 9,99. This could also say: Amazon is going to up their prices. Jut saying.

2010 will be the year of the eBook

There is an awful lot of whining and carping about a product that isn't even out yet, but there were the same naysayers about the iPhone, and the iPod. History will bear me out on this, just wait for it. 2009 was the first time eBooks overtook print books on Amazon (they sell a few books if you haven't heard of them).

CourseSmart.com already sells college textbooks in ebook form, at prices up to 50% off the printed version, and already have an app for the iPhone and working on one for the iPad (albeit a bit rough on the interface). The iPad is a huge leap forward from that, both in size alone and interface. Plus they already have the store built. I would bet on Apple being a big enough gorilla to continue to pressure the prices of the books downward, much as they did with music. Just in the academic market alone, this is going to be big. Really. Don't just take my word for it...

There is a good read here, a whitepaper and market analysis on ereaders:

I am sold, even if some of the wishful goodies don't show up when released. My eldest goes away to school in a year, which is good timing for me to buy v2.0. Until then the 1.0 version makes sense for me now...

I wondered the same thing. If not, the Apple Remote application on the iPad will allow you to control your itunes on your laptop/desktop/appletv.

That would, unfortunately, thoroughly ruin the experience having to connect to yet another computer to pick songs or force you to have another computer turned on. Guess time will tell.

Mossberg asked a question I was really wondering about: whether or not you'll be able to save/export as a Word document in the iPad version of Pages. From Steve Jobs' answer, it sounds like yes. (Maybe this was mentioned during the keynote, but I haven't had a chance to watch yet.)

To me, if it really has 140 hours of music playback (with the screen off I assume) and 10 hours of reading (with the screen on), or something approaching those figures in real usage, all on a device that has a very decent screen and works like an iPhone, starting at $499...I can see how this could be a huge success.

That makes me think it’s 10 hours of Wi-Fi OR watching video, but less if watching video WITH Wi-Fi turned on. (And less still if the video’s actually streaming off the net.)

Still, 10 hours of anything is overkill. I like it.

funny how they tell us what we want to hear. I'm good if it could do at least 6-7 hours strong with heavy use.

Who makes the display?

Wired seems to think it is LG. If so then it is possibly using Enhanced IPS.

According to Wikipedia:

Also from Wikipedia:

The Korea Times has an article detailing LG IPS technology:

So basically, this guy isn't considering all the facts. Apple isn't going to tout 10 hours if it gets less than 3 like he claims
So, if LG found a way to make an IPS display without it consuming too much power, is this an indication that the next laptop refreshes will have an IPS display.
NY to Tokyo is 13hrs+. Oh well, I suppose I have to sleep some.
I know NY to Tel Aviv (Israel) is 10 hours, and flying over the entire continent of Asia should take at least 8 hours, I think NY to tokyo would be about 18 hours.
Stop whinging. Not that big of a deal.

whining :p
If they let us on the plane with it.
Why would they not let you on plane with it? They allow laptops and other electrical devices on plane

It is one thing for critics to be all nitpicky about the device, but what about those of us that wanted this thing to be incredible? I am not hater, I have two iPhones and love Macs. I had placed money aside and was fully planning on buying the iPad, but now that I see what it is I can't say I am all that impressed. I would have paid double if it ran a regular Mac OS and I could develop on it. This will not be a good e-reader (backlit and glossy screen), it is not a good netbook (no multitasking, no flash). It has possibilities, but I am underwhelmed to say the least.

I really don't see this device being a game changer on any front, or being all that popular when it comes out. An enhancement or killer app may change that, but right now it looks like a mediocre attempt at a tablet to me. I expected more from Apple.

Don't most commercial passenger jets have power adapters these days? It seems like a lot are even starting to get usb.

The iPad is a perfect example of how Apple marketing is the genius of the company. Apple can no longer compete with the competition. They have to overwhelm it. The iPad will not do that. At least in this configuration.

Sure diehard apple fans will flock to it's defense and some will be sold but in the long run if it does'nt change significantly it will not be the "magical" device it was touted as.

You cannot ignore the fact that it is only a bigger iPod touch. Simple as that!

The question is whats wrong with the iPod Touch, and whats wrong with ha 10" version? I know everyone was expecting the second coming of christ with the iPad but the truth is, what exactly is so wrong with it? 90% of the tasks i need to do in my free time i accomplish on my iPhone, but i would love a bigger screen, and bam the iPad has it. You can surf, listen to music, play bigger (and eventually more complex) games on it, watch movies, and everything else you can do on the touch. It's got an e-book store, and truth is most of us spend hours reading online as it is on an LCD, i dont see the big deal of lack of e-ink in that regard.

Sure, its got no multitasking, but neither does the Touch/iPhone, and millions of people have survived. And the big complaint about flash? Clearly you havent used flash on a netbook because it sucks there too, even with nvidia ion and flash beta 10.2.

Fact is, the iPad is going to sell like hotcakes, and will only get better as Os 4.0 and iPad specific apps get released.

The majority of international flights have some sort of charging capabilities (at least the airlines I fly). Seatguru only lists true power supplies and not USB (which is all you need for the tablet!) but I know American, British Air, KLM, IcelandAir, and Qantas have some sort of power supply (on at least some of the planes).
I was pleasantly surprised this past summer when I flew IcelandAir to discover every seat had a USB charger so I could keep my iPhone charged up throughout the flight.

It took just around 14 hours direct from JFK to Tokyo. They went westbound up and over northern Canada, crossed the northern tip of Alaska, hugged the eastern coast of Russia and down to Tokyo.

the best part for me was that books will be the same price as Amazon.
I don't want to be buying the iPad knowing that it will be more expensive to buy my books then if i had a kindle.
Of course i have to wait for books to be available in Canada, and if its anything like the music/movie store at launch we'll be missing half the good books

Amazon offers a free Kindle app for the iPhone -- an app that also works on the iPad. All Kindle books will work on the iPad.

And why are we even discussing battery time for music listening on iPad. Seriously. Who is going to use it for music? How? Built-in speaker(s) will suck (they always do on devices this small). I can imagine people using head-phones while doing something else. They definitely are not going to stare at the blank screen for 140 hours. Are you?

Nope.

Making great products that people want is the genius of the company, hence Apple's numbers, hence their ability to to not just ignore a recession but hit it full-on with a truck and then back over it repeatedly.

It isn't some magical hocus-pocus that Apple sprinkles on consumers. People genuinely love Apple products, for reasons which should be obvious. It's just that simple. Of course, Apple's marketing and products will naturally reflect each other - style, attention to detail, and simplicity.

Nothing at all. Misgivings and criticisms are manufactured in the artificial Apple Forums bubble on the ass-end of the internet, which in no way reflect the reality of the market, nor have they ever.

Forums like MacRumors, AppleInsider, etc., are little self-contained communities full of people that are completely out of touch with what's going on off the boards. This is why Apple forums are the only place you see nonsense about headless Macs, the "rise" of hackintoshes, total ignorance about basic IP principles, and plaintive cries about Apple failing in a recession if they don't cut their prices in half and "open up" OS X.

I don't care about the cost of those ebooks. How do I get the extensive library of ebooks I already own on the thing?

Amazon offers a free Kindle app for the iPhone -- an app that also works on the iPad. All Kindle books will work on the iPad.

Also Stanza has a great app (I think much better than the Kindle one) that you can import your own books into. It accepts almost every type of ebook format. You just open a file on your Mac and sync it to your iPhone (or iTab). I've purchased books from a variety of sources and can read them all fine using Stanza.

I'd probably just have the thing resting near my hifi, connected via the headphone jack or a dock adaptor.

If I'm on a train it would be handy too. Music and 3G web browsing. Or writing that last minute report/todo list/etc.

And why are we even discussing battery time for music listening on iPad. Seriously.

Seriously indeed. Why do I want a headphone wire attached to an iPad, when I can carry a Nano for mp3's (or my iPhone for Pandora) in my pocket and thus not be tethered to the tablet while reading/browsing/leaving it on the couch while getting another drink from the fridge?

Cool would be a pair of apps so I could control music playback on my iPhone or iPod Touch from an iPad.
