Very odd...I just had the same problem...checked settings and the slider switch was set to orientation lock...when I changed it to mute my games all started back with sound...looks like a bug, feels like a bug... Probably is a bug

iPad no sound FIX

FIX for no sound on iPad: Go to Settings / General / "Use Side Switch to:"
Select "Mute" Then use the rocker switch on the side to turn up the sound. Once you have restored the sound, you may go back to Settings / General / "Use Side Switch to:" and change back to "Lock Rotation". At least this worked for me!

I had this same issue and it turned out the fix was as simple as turning the mute button off. See, with iOS 4 Apple changed the little button next to the volume to be a mute button like it is on the phone. The orientation lock is now handled in software (double click the home button and then swipe left). The reason it took me a while to figure this out (in addition to the change being totally not intuitive nor well messages) is that some apps apparently don't respect the mute button the net effect being that sound "worked" in some apps but not others.

Hope this helps somone in the same situation as I was.

This did the trick, and I can't believe it was this simple! I had no idea there even was a "mute" button. It would have been nice if there were some instructions with the thing. Apple assumes every user - new or old - is intuative to the point of not needing directions or manuals.
Anyway, I registered on this site after finding this string and Allanwells' post just to thank him for helping me before I went insane trying to figure it out myself. Thanks again.

I tried all of the above suggestions. sound works on some apps and not others, no rhyme or reason. this is my first Apple product and most unintuitive. Where is this "soft mute" & how do I access it?
Is it visible. Please help. I love this iPad , but this is driving me crazy.

Ok after several tries, I finally found the soft mute- guess I need to find an "IPad for dummies" book or download a manual. Whoever think Apple products are intuitive has never used a pc!

No sound on other apps problem answer

There is sound for everything else but the game apps and maybe other apps.
No need to take it in to get it fixed.
Double push the button. It rasises the page and shows the open apps. Swipe that section to the right. You will see a play botton and also to the far left you will see the speaker icon. Tap the speaker icon once to unmute.

Yup this is the fix! I've been using the orientation lock a lot recently, something must have jammed up in iOS somewhere, but using this trick sets everything back to normal.

And that's using the latest version of iOS 5.01 so this bug has been hanging around for a while...

I know what happen

:p

:p Hey you have the same problem as me! Oh I think you should look at the volume key. Right next to it, will have a small little round black button. Switch it so that you don't see the small orange light. Then TA-DA! The sound is on without using the headphones anymore! In my case, I was going to school and while I was at home, my parents let my 5 year old brother playing my iPad! I was mad when I knew he had do something to it. I don't know how I know that he had but something was different from it so I found out. My parents just shut their mouths and say nothing when I screamed out that my brother had messed up my iPad! But it has no sounds an doesn't rotate in a few days. Now I found out the way to fix the volume, but I'm not sure about the rotation but at least the sound is more important. =D:apple: Hope this helps! Bye and Your Welcome if you say thank you. LOL! I'm a good helper aren't I?

iPad 2 volume slider dissapeared and no sound.

We were watching Netflix and the iPad fell over on its "Smart Cover" (was not very smart this time), Anyway the internal speaker stopped functioning. We plugged in headphones and the sound was fine. We unplugged the headphones and the sound would stop. I checked the mute slider (we usually have this set to orientation lock), I double tapped the Home button and slid to the volume control/brightness and the speaker was not muted. I looked at the volume slider on the right and it was NOT THERE!?!?. This had me quite confused. I rebooted it, reset it, restored it, NOTHING WORKED!! For whatever reason we got out our genuine iPad to HDMI adapter. I plugged in the adapter and the volume slider popped on to the screen. This left me further confused. I started playing music and unplugged the HDMI adapter. The volume slider was still there! I was like WOW! Then I went and touched the slider and it disappeared!! Well anyway, I unplugged and plugged HDMI adapter in and out a few times. Then by the MAGIC of Steve Jobs' dead soul it started WORKING! YAY! Party time! :D :D

Solution

My iPad suddenly have no sound! The volume key is not working as well!

But under the following condition, it works:
1. When I use headphone, everything is normal. The volume key is working too. That means the sound chips and the volume key is working.
2. When I play Magic Piano, everything is normal too. Music is coming out from the internal speakers. The volume key is working too. That means hardware of my iPad is normal. But, all others Apps, even Video or iPod is not working, no sound from the internal speakers and the volume key is not working too!
Tried to reset all and also restore the firmware. It won't help! Still the same!
Any suggestion?

Clean the docking area with q tip w a bit of alcohol, that does the trick !!! :)

Just got bit by this yesterday. After 3 restores I accidentally tried this and it works. Gotta figure out how to report this bug...

Hi. I have tried all of the suggestion above and nothing is working. When I double click home button and the slide to get settings, there is no volume icon. I see everything else, but where the volume icon is supposed to be, there is nothing. Are there more suggestions at all? Volume works fine with headphones, just nothing is getting sound back without headphones. Thank you all for your time!

I took a screen shot of my iPad but I don't know how to attach it here, it won't attach directly from iPad. I can send it through email if anyone is interested. Thanks for your help!

No sound: headphones mode

So I just bought a used iPad. Works great, love it, however the media and apps have no sound. When I try to use the sound buttons, it says "sound effects (headphones)" so basically, it's in headphones mode all the time. I don't have the original cables for it and I don't know how to fix it. Help pleeeeeeeease!

Thanx Allan! It took me just a few seconds to fix the sound.:)

I know this is an old thread, but I was having this problem with my iPad 3. I tried all the solutions listed and finally tried cleaning the dock connecter using a Q-tip and alcohol. It now works perfectly!

Sounds great now

Thanks so much all you all you lovely tech types, I'll keep trying. I suddenly had no sound on my games and after hours of messing about I found this site and within minutes - sound! I had used the side button for sound/mute and then for a moment changed it to orientation and then put it back to sound. Some time went after that and then I lost game sound. After reading the posts on this site I tried once again using the side button for orientation and using the control panel for sound. I saw that the sound had been turned off in the control panel so turned it on and it worked! I'm obviously no tech gifted but at least I was smart enough to find this site!
Thanks again.
