I just don't understand what's so inconvenient about holding the vol down rocker for 1.5 seconds to mute...

It's far less annoying than waking the device, double clicking the home button, swiping right and tapping the screen orientation lock icon.

Strange decision, as I thought the orientation switch was a brilliant decision. Oh well.

If the device is asleep then why do you care about the orientation lock? Surely you would only be turning the lock on when the iPad was running? Unless I'm confused.

Ok, good point calling me out on that technicality. But my point stands. This is an illogical move, IMO.

Can we all stop bothering a very important CEO with ridiculous petty questions like this?

For the record, a mute switch is way better. I hate that emails make a tone when they come in in the middle of the night.

It's not a huge deal to mute with the rocker switch. But having a dedicated switch makes muting (and orientation lock) consistent across iDevices.

Don't like

I don't like this.

I like it the way it is. I don't need multi-tasking (in my experience this has been pointless on my 3GS). Steve's excellent taste is usually pretty helpful, but there are times when it can really be grating. This is one.

So do I upgrade...we will see.

THIS is why I hate Steve Jobs.

People want the ability to CHOOSE orientation lock or mute. Its not exactly rocket science - add a setting to let them choose which one it does.

What an *******...there's no excuse for this. The size of it is not the point here - this is classic Steve: 'I use it like this...so everyone else will too'.

It's MY iPad Steve - not yours!

This seems like the smallest most insignificant change ever.... sure I don't have an iPad (yet) but screen lock v. mute is that huge? Isn't the screen lock just turning to a virtual switch?

Where is the problem coming from? Just a physical switch preference over virtual?

I know on my iPhone I would be very annoyed without a mute switch, however the orientation...... not so big of a deal....

You have no idea how often the orientation lock is used.

Either way I still think a far larger percentage of the world will be wanting to mute the iPad rather than lock the screen orientation. Hence quicker access to mute (by 2 seconds).

Plus the way Apple evolves I'm sure the mute switch will come in (more) handy eventually. I'm willing to bet a dollar you may change your opinion.

For me, the simple act of laying it down on a table is enough for it to switch to the opposite direction, the orientation lock was also good for waking the device and it staying in the orientation it was when sleeping - as picking it up can flip it.

Oh, ok, if you don't like it, then forget it. I'm sure apple will put you on speed dial so they can consult with you before making any decisions.

Two Months From Now:

Mute Switch Approval Ratings Up 40%; Orientation Lock Controversy Declared "Internet Bull----"

This is the kind of thing that people working at  Resellers (like me) get billions of questions about. For those people who don't read sites like macrumors but who own an iPad as well it will, at first, seem as if something broke.
I've encountered many iOS 4 users who didn't even know what "the multitasking" was, how you could trigger it and whether it was edible...

My iPad is not currently jailbroken, but I'm going to change that just for this "simple" reason. Although it might be a minor issue for some people, for other people the orientation lock switch is one of the most used functions on the device and its a lot more convenient to trigger it with a physical rather than a virtual button.

Really?

Again, really?

I'm glad I don't make products that you buy, if I did I would take it away from you. It's a switch. A switch.

Again, a switch.

This article is talking about the purpose of a switch.

Again, a switch.

Your iPad will still work, and your life will move forward. Promise.

I can't believe people are contemplating the the fact of upgrading their device depending if they can:

a. Mute faster
b. Lock their screen faster

Either way you haven't lost the function... I really truly am in awe.

I think you've nailed it honestly. Apple/Jobs loves consistency.

Well this is the obvious reason - no rocket science in the decision.

Still doesn't mean the iPad is an iPhone, etc. I know they are shooting for consistency, but this decision isn't good from my perspective.

At LEAST give us an option to choose. Yes, across all iDevices.

MUTE is NOT the same as volume, people!

First of all, the level of whining about this issue is kind of a mind blower. Sheesh.

Second, and most importantly, the MUTE switch is NOT the same as volume.

The mute switch will not kill the volume of the iPod or apps that have sound, but it will mute alerts like email and such, as well as FACETIME "ringing" which wil no doubt be coming in rev2!

So quit complaining because you don't even know how it's being implemented in 4.2 (and beyond) yet. Your precious "press and hold the volume" is still there, even though I'm sure some of you guys were the same ones bitching about this feature last April when the orientation lock switch first came into being after initially being advertised as said MUTE switch. :)

How soon they forget...

Sj

..... The items you question about apple are the reason you love apple; SJ and crew develop ideas that you are not ready for period. In due time it will all make sense.

Switching my view

At first I was miffed, but now that I think about it, I'm constantly using this switch. It was bound to break eventually. Good move Uncle Steve.

Wouldn't you really only need the orientation lock when you have the iPad on and are actually using it? So in that case, the on-screen lock makes perfect sense. Rather than reach for the physical switch on the side of the unit, just swipe and tap on the screen, which presumably you'd already be looking at.

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPad revision does away with that switch entirely. Why not press both the volume up and down buttons together and have that trigger mute?

Big deal. It's so minor I'm surprised it's being reported by MR.
