A few days ago, I noticed that when I woke up and opened my Smart Keyboard, the iPad’s screen would be black but wouldn’t actually come on. It took me a few toggles before the screen finally appeared. Once I did that, the iPad worked fine...until the next time it happened. It’s been doing this for the last few days. I did a couple of hard resets, but that didn‘t seem to fix the problem. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it hardware-related or software-related? Is it time for me to trade it in while I can? LOL. I’m hoping the next iOS update fixes a bug if it is that. This is the first time it’s ever happened to me, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a hardware issue of some sort. You should contact Apple support and see what they say about it.

I have an iPad Pro 10.5 and it’s also having the same issue. I put the case on and close the screen and the screen would remain on or when I would open the Smart Keyboard it would remain asleep.

My Smart Keyboard is also NOT detected when in keyboard mode. It will detect it randomly sometimes and no matter what I do it fails to have a reliable connection.

This started happening after the latest iOS update.

Now that I think about it, I've had both of those issues - most notably, the screen remaining on when I closed the cover. And like you, this didn't start happening until the latest update. I'm going to experiment tonight by removing the smart keyboard and letting it sleep sans cover.

I would, but I am afraid they'll give me the standard responses followed by the, "Restore as new" mandate. I may hold out for the next iOS update and see if that fixes the issue.

One other note: I took a screenshot while the screen was still black, and the shot (of my lockscreen) actually came out fine. Weird.

Well, it's definitely not the smart cover that's the problem. I'm thinking that it had to be a software issue, though it was fine until a week ago. Hopefully, Apple releases the next software update sooner rather than later.

Although it does sound hardware-related, restoring as new is a good troubleshooting step. If the problem doesn't persist after doing that, I would restore from a backup. At least these steps might help to narrow down the issue and might save you some time with Apple Support.

I’m going to try restoring from a backup first and seeing if that helps the situation. If that doesn’t work, I may try the nuclear option and set up as new. Or, since this is over 3 years old, I can get a new one, LOL. It’s weird because once I get the screen on (after hitting the lock button several times), it works just fine. So frustrating.

Let us know what happens and I'll keep my fingers crossed a restore resolves it for you.

Welp, the restore from backup didn't fix the issue. I'm starting to think it is indeed a hardware problem. I was planning on buying a new MacBook Air (my Pro is over 5 years old) and wait out the rumored mini LED iPad, but I may have to alter those plans.

Interesting development: I tried to reinstall iPadOS via my MacBook and the Apple Support online instructions, but my MacBook won't detect my iPad when the screen is acting up. It detects my iPhone just fine (I used the same cable to confirm), but the iPad doesn't even come up as a device. However, when the screen does come on, the MacBook detects it fine. Really weird. I think I'll reach out to support and see what they say.

Tech support said to wipe and set up as new via my computer, but even after doing that, the problem persists. It’s definitely a hardware issue, but seeing as how it’ll likely cost more than I can afford, I’ll probably just hold onto it and wait until I find a good deal on a new one. Once the screen comes on, it’s fine, so I’ll make do.

I have and had the same issues with three different iPads: iPad 2019 (new), iPad Pro 10.5 (refurbished) and now iPad Pro 11 (2020) (new). They all had to be replaced. Actually I'm still waiting for the box to replace the iPad Pro 11.
Customer service calls it 'peculiar'. Not sure that I would call it that.
Given that I personally experienced this exact same issue now for the 3rd time, I'm wondering if that is a more common problem? Customer service would also not elaborate on the cause of the issue.
