I've done the same - got a 10.5 - but then decided you just can't beat the 12.9 screen space so got that on order as well now.. Going to try them both..

Lol, how about a LTE model? Maybe I will grab one of those next as both of the ones I purchased are wifi.

Maybe I will get a different color as well, both I got are Space Gray.

I just picked up my 12.9 inch Pro and have arrived home to set it up and migrate into my workflow here are my impressions within the first 10 minutes.

1. The display is gorgeous and the iPad has a level of smoothness unfound on any device I have ever used.
2. The A10X is fast, setting up the iPad Pro was quick and smooth, BAH DAH DAH BAH IM LOVIN IT:D
3. The device although large feels very light for the size and feels significant in the hand but not bulky or uncomfortable.
4. Touch ID 2 is faster then ever and I'm so glad my iPhone 7 and iPad have parity now.
5. The speakers sound wonderful and full at half volume they were clearly audible and loud as my old Air 2.
6. The 12.9 inch screen is wonderful, some may disagree but I love the space I have to work now and multitasking no longer feels like I'm giving something up.

Please feel free to ask questions but I wont be doing any tests for people, simply because I don't want to install a bunch of apps on my new iPad. ;)
Did you also own the iPad Pro 12.9 gen 1? And if so, what is your comparison between the. Two?

Thanks for the warm welcome I'm amazed at every aspect of this thing, from the polished chamfered edges, A10X performance, 120hz screen, and MY GOD these speakers :D:D:eek::) I'm blown away

Yes the iPad weighs less then the first generation, as for the speakers they are F**kin AMAZING, 80% volume and this thing is filling my room with amazing audio. If you haven't heard the speakers outside a loud Apple Store, you will probably be blown away as I have.

Thank you for reviewing the speakers but i watched a meticulous review of that:

Looks like new 12.9" is the loudest out there besides the spots/holes of first generation was 9 per speaker, Now there are 10 spots/holes on new 12.9" per speaker which made it louder if I'm not wrong.

I understand that the 2nd gen actually weight less then the 1st gen. Wonder how they reduced the weight but cool they did. That was one of my only "complaints" with the first gen. I had the cellular since release and recently sold it. Thinking of buying the new and in wifi only so the weight reduction should be even bigger.

12.9" IPP (wifi) weights 677g vs. 692g (cellular). So there is a difference. I wish they could reduce the weight about 10-20% for the next iteration to somewhere around 550g. BTW has anyone measured the weight of the smart cover on 12.9" or 10.5"?

This thing is incredible. Coming from an Air2...these speakers are amazing, so much better than even my MacBook Pro! This new TrueTone display with the higher refresh rate is instantly noticeable, as is the speed.

I never thought my Air2 was slow until this new Pro. Wow.

Really happy with my purchase. Still getting used to the keyboard and pencil.

The more I use this iPP the more I love it. The Smart Keyboard and the mix of touch and typing, I will eventually get used to, but I am loving everything else about it. Watched a bit of a movie last night and the speakers are wonderful too.

Looking forward to seeing how much more productive I become as I continue to use and learn. Am thrilled I am drawing daily again.

Just to add, the 12.9" is super portable. Reading this forum made it sound like it was like lugging around a 17" 2008 MacBook Pro. It's really light, easy to use one handed, comfortable to use on the couch, it feels just like my Air 2.

And the SmartKeyboard is way better than I thought it would be - it's so easy to use in your lap on the couch, doesn't feel like it will fall over at all, and you can type super fast on it. I'm actually typing better on this than I do on my MacBook Pro.

I'm so happy with my purchase, I only hope that I don't regret cancelling the order for the 512gb and picking up the 256gb instead...really due to lack of patience in waiting for the larger model. But I figured with iCloud storage and Apple Music I should be ok.

Bring on iOS11 and this will easily be a computer replacement for me.

EDIT: And the Pencil is perfect for taking notes. I did some testing and can be watching a lecture Picture in Picture, with Safari and OneNote running in SplitView and take handwritten notes in real time. It's actually incredible. I haven't been hyped about an Apple product like this in SO long.

First of all, thanks for your impressions...

And one question.

How about battery life?

I went to the store to play with both iPads. The screen and camera on the new 12.9" are great and are worth the upgrade. The 10.5" is nice, but it frankly just looks small compared to the 12.9". As someone who is used to the 12.9", it's hard to go back.
It is the best for productivity imho especially when split screen comes into it.

Still waiting on my 12.9", its stuck in Taiwan with a Delay Beyond our Control!! But I'm reading reviews in anticipation and am really surprised at the short charging cord. Maybe wireless charging is coming for ipads next year so Tim said "just cheapen that cord thingy this year, they'll flock to upgrade their ipad for wireless chging next year" LOL! And I'm dreaming here, but it would have been nice if they gave both new models some of the nice iphone 7+ features like "pick up to wake" and the nice feel to tapping the Home Button

Heading to the Apple Store today (would prefer BB for the points for my purchase but not in stock) and need to decide between the 10.5 and 12.9

As in my other thread, resale value is a major concern for me and the 12.9 doesn't have anywhere near the market of the 10.5 and I upgrade every year. I am concerned that in the long run I will be losing out a lot more for a small fraction of case need in the 12.9

Still torn there.

Sounds like resale value is not A major concern, but THE major concern.

Resale value of ALL iPads have significantly dropped over the years. Whatever you THINK you can get for your 1-year old 10.5 Pro, is probably too high. With regular sales of NEW iPads for prices LESS than Apple sells refurbs, there is no reason to buy an Apple refurb, and even less reason to buy a non-refurbished used one in a private sale.

Given your wants/needs I don't see why you are even considering the 12.9. If there is only "a small fraction of case need" for the 12.9, why consider it at all?

I consider it due to the actual use of the iPad but with requirements to upgrade every year, the resale value is the biggest concern. Functionally i will make due with either as i used a 9.7 just fine last year and lived with the compromises if you will.

The 12.9 fits the needs better but seeing some of them go for almost 50% off a year later is concerning but that is tech in general as of late and just the sign of the times.

Yup. iPhones and iPads never used to go on sale and supply wasn't as plentiful.

Now, you can buy one for $25-50 off (GC or straight discount) upon release. There's just no reason to buy a used iPad with no warranty. Not when brand new stock on clearance or Apple certified refurbished and option to add AC+ are available for less.

- These iPads may not be updated for another 18 months to two years
- You should be aiming to keep an iPad for two to three years anyway
- Resale value for all iPads is pretty weak (iPads are discounted pretty frequently around the holidays), and it is even weaker for the 12.9". There really is no way around it, so if that is the major concern for you, I would buy used or wait for holiday discounts

Yep Air 2 was really slow compared to this guy.

Congrats to you! It is a great device espacially for first time 12.9 buyers. You will enjoy it more and more every day and it gets even better with IOS 11. I bought the 1.gen 12.9 last year mainly for productive work and waited for a new "Pro" IOS since then. For me this is the main "upgrade" for the 12.9.

All other hardware improvements are not essential for me. The bigger jump will hopefully come after the iPhone 8 with OLED screens, integrated home button into the display and very small bezels which will reduce the footprint of the 12.9 drastically. So I will follow the old rule "don't upgrade to only the next generation" and wait for that to come.

I am trying to have best of both worlds and separated the tablet use from the productive use. For that I don't use the Smart Keyboard but the Smart Cover instead and I don't use a back cover to stay as light and comfortable as possible (I like the aluminum back much more than the plastic feeling of the back covers).

When I use it productive a have i Magic Keyboard with me that beats the Smart Keyboard hands down. Together with the keyboard a use a Citrix X1 mouse with Jump Desktop for remote usage of my cloud VMs. I wish that would be possible with IOS!. I don't like "the mix of touch and typing" and think that indirect interaction with the iPad should should be always indirect. For that you need an additional pointing device like a mouse or a trackpad. It is very annoying to switch from typing to touch the upright display and back to the keyboard. I hope that Apple take the plunge and made this possible in the future especially if the want to establish iPads in the professional market....

I like the 12.9 inch but think it is to big to bring with you. Like in the car, restaurant, etc.

Got there and played in the Apple Store for like an hour. Back and forth really put them both to the test.

In the end I was blown away by ProMotion and the tasks I do fit so much better on the 12.9.

Resale value be damned and I'll deal with that when the time comes.

Thanks for all the input and very happy to enjoy this new device.

I went from a 1st gen 12.9 to a new 12.9. I know someone up there asked the difference. The display is of course very different, with this one having the true tone, and I really like it. I had struggled last year with whether to do 9.7 because of the true tone (and the size), but in the end, I went with the 12.9 because I was pretty much replacing my iMac and wanted the bigger screen.

I'm also super impressed with how smooth this is (that's the pro motion in action I think - I'm not super technical). When comparing it earlier to my grandson's iPad (the 2017 9.7), I couldn't get over how choppy his looked as I scrolled around. This one is super smooth, even when scrolling really quickly on text heavy pages. I didn't compare it to my other pro, but I can tell you - a lot of times my screen would kinda blank out a little if I was scrolling quickly; this definitely doesn't do that at all. It's awesome.

I have yet to try my pencil because it's just been hectic around here, but later I will, and I expect it to be better. I also haven't used the camera, but that's not really something I ever used my other one for either, so I don't know that I'd really be able to tell the difference there.

I'm honestly so impressed with the display and the smoothness that the rest is gonna be the icing on the cake.

Depends upon one's definition of "update". Apple will most certainly release a new iPad in 2018. The question is, "which one?". Could a Mini Pro be it? Possibly an 11.7 Pro?
If anything I think they would update the Mini 4 to a new iPad Mini model to match the new naming scheme, and A10 processor. Outside if that I dont see Apple doing anything major with the Pro line next year.
