Ah, ok. Well, you'll be waiting until next fall, at the earliest.

So what features are you waiting for?

At least better cameras and a flash, rose gold color. Of course the ability to run both Mac OS and or Windows are desirable.

a folding split display with no spine is easily done. forget the spine. Just approach it differently. have two halves that stack on top of each other. Then to make one screen have them magnetically attach to each other side by side that communicate back and forth using a smart connector that is between the screens. all you would need is to have the screen go edge to edge.

Seriously: No reason to wait. The current iPP is _awesome_. It's fast, the screen is awesome and the Pencil is awesome. If you think you would use a bigger iPad that you can write on... I heartily recommend it...

I really don't want to wait. I want the bigger screen now. I love my Air 2, but I really don't like the screen size (too small). Obviously different strokes for different folks, but I'd hate to have a Mini. Portability would be nice, but I'd loathe the tiny screen.

I didn't have the cash on hand when iPP was released. Now I do. I've been waiting for a good sale. I prefer to buy it at BB to get the RZ points (the big purchase helps to make Elite/Elite Plus status for next year). I wasn't paying close enough attention to these boards or SD (spend too much $$ there when I'm on the site a lot), and I missed the Staples deal that started on the 14th. I would've matched it at BB and had one in hand now. The only thing better would be BB having it at that price and being able to use a 10% off mover's coupon with it.

That said, I was disappointed that the iPP didn't get a better camera than the Air 2, which was released a year earlier. I know lots of people don't care about tablet cameras. Some see no need for them at all. And while I agree you look like a dork taking pictures at a graduation with a tablet, I still want mine to have a nice camera. If I'm on my tablet at home and a child or a pet does something cute, I want to be able to take a pic or a video without putting down my tablet, picking up my phone, opening up the camera app, etc...

I was further disappointed to learn that the Air 3 (or Pro 9.7 or whatever it's being called) sounds like it's going to have everything the iPP has, only on a smaller screen. On top of that, some aspects of it may be better than the iPP (improved camera w/flash). Obviously it's a newer device, so upgrades can happen. But I want a reason other than the bigger screen to spend more for the iPP. I'm happy for those in the market for an Air 3 (happy it's getting everything they want it to have, save for maybe Force Touch). I'm disappointed personally though, as I want iPP to have things the others don't have (other than the bigger screen). I like exclusivity in my high $$ purchases.

Still not sure if I'm going to wait until next fall/spring/whenever the next iPP is released or not. I really want a bigger screen! I guess it depends on whether or not any more nice deals come soon. The longer it takes for another good deal to pop up, the greater the chance I'll wait it out.

Yes but it will have something and that's a bigger battery.
Running the iPad Pro in a smaller case, there's no way the same performance will happen without an underclocked A9X or it will burn through the smaller battery.
I can see them mimicking the pro in all functionality but it will come down to one thing and that's what size will the user prefer?

In this case, anyway, since the display tech is likely the same. Smaller backlighting, fewer pixels to drive, less power draw. And I'm sure Apple will do whatever other power-saving moves they have to to keep battery life acceptable to them (slower CPU, etc).

That's the real question.

What will they change between the Pro and the second one?

I don't think it will be a large change feature wise - but a faster CPU is certain. They may change the design, though. A new look, or if iPhone 7 looses the headphone jack, maybe that.

The only 'feature' they may add is 3D touch. This is not as simple as it sounds, though, but I'm guessing it's coming sooner or later.

If I had to guess, an A11X iPad Pro (skipping A10 this year) in 2 years with a slight design refresh and maaaaaybe 3D touch. But, in reality, I have no idea :)

It will most likely be 1.5 years before a new 12.9" iPad is out, so if you want a big one, no reason not to get it now. The fact that it's awesome and really really powerful just makes that decision easier :)

If they're smart, they'll keep 3D Touch as a phone feature where it works better.

3D Touch makes no sense on an iPad anyways.

Its useful on the iPhone because of the small screen space.

Still don't understand how since 2010, Apple hasn't changed the layout for iOS on iPad. Everything is just bigger squares in rows of 4.

All that wasted space could be used so much better.

On the contrary, it would make perfect sense. I'll give you an example. When I draw in Procreate, I use the Pencil for drawing and fingers for gestures. For me, the most used gesture (apart from pinch to zoom) is the color picker, where I rest my finger on a color and wait a few secs. It can be frustrating to wait every time. Instead, with 3D Touch, I could just press harder to get an instant pick. Or I could 3D Touch on the screen to quickly switch from a Brush to an Eraser. The beauty of it is that when I use the Pencil, the 3D Touch could be off and it could be set to respond only to my finger.

3D Touch is like an extra gesture. So far, you have swipes, two-finger gestures and tap-to-hold. With 3D Touch you get an easy to use new one.

The problems with 3D Touch are not in usage scenarios - believe me, you could find some great uses for it. It's technological - it requires the taptic engine (which would probably need to be spaced out across the iPad's surface) and special sensors for a large area. I'm almost certain it's coming to the iPad, but most likely not this year, and probably not the next one either.

As for the wasted space on the iPad, I agree. Let's hope something nice is coming in iOS10.

I thought the pencil already had the ability to do different stuff depending on how much pressure is applied? Or is that only for drawing?

I don't own one, I just remember Apple mentioning it in a video/keynote.

The Pencil does sense different levels of pressure, but so far, it's only used for drawing. Theoretically, I think Apple could implement 3D Touch through the Pencil, but the problem is, that will only work if you have the Pencil, and Apple wants to keep the Pencil an optional accessory.

Of course, but the pressure on the pencil is reserved for drawing (thickness, opacity of line, etc.) while this would be for touch interactions (gestures). Let me explain it this way: finger and pencil interactions are two different things and the app knows when you're using the stylus and when you're using the finger. The stylus has a lot of levels of pressure, but that is used for the drawing part. You still use fingers for other things, like pinch to zoom, pan, etc. And there, 3D Touch would add an extra layer of possibility.

Yeah, I doubt we see a new iPP this fall. I'd think by next spring though. You don't think it'll be until fall 2017?

Right now I'm waiting to see how much the new 9.7 will have under the hood. If it's everything iPP is and more, I'm waiting. If iPP retains some oomph over the 9.7 (other than screen size and/or battery life) - something like more RAM, for example - I'll buy an iPP when BB has a sale. I'm kinda' thinking they'll have a sale by the end of March. Just a guess.

The iPP camera isn't all that bad...

To answer the question of the OP. The answer is similar to buying a digital camera.

You can't take today's photos with tomorrow's camera.

In some respects, short product cycles make people wait for the next version. Even if the state of the art is boxed in front of them.

Don't get sucked into the "waiting for the next version", because what happens is then you wait for "the price drop". Rinse and repeat.

The iPP camera isn't all that bad...

I agree that it's not bad. I have the iPad Air 2, and it's got a nice camera. I was just bummed that a product released 1 year after the Air 2 didn't get an upgraded camera. Usually cameras are upgraded every cycle. Now it looks like the Air 3 or Pro 9.7 (whatever they're calling it) is going to have a better camera (at the very least it'll have flash).

I'm still wanting the Pro. As I predicted, BB put it on sale this week (I figured they'd have a sale by the end of March). It's $100 off ($850 for the wifi 128 GB model). The Staples deal was better ($800 instead of $850) on its own. The BB sale is better if you can get your hands on a 10% off mover's coupon. Those are increasingly harder to come by though.

I wish the BB sale would've come AFTER the release of the new iPad in just over a week. I want to be able to compare the two. Then there's always the possibility that the price of the Pro may drop a bit after the new model is released (although I doubt that happens).

iPad pro is perfect .. If only the software would get better

This is the perfect assessment for me too. Yes, hardware upgrades are inevitable, but for me, not needed yet.

I completely agree we need better, more expansive and powerful software. Im personally happy with the os and it's evolution (mouse support would be peachy i think) but the lack of app enthusiasm from the devs so far is highly highly dissapointing for me.

I sold my air 2 and am impatiently waiting for the new one to be in the shops. I wrote off the ipp for being too big, but recently I've been using my surface pro 4 as a tablet while I don't have my ipad, and the size is growing on me - its amazing for watching video content in your lap. Weight isn't a major problem because I usually just rest it on my leg on the sofa.

So I would be open for the larger sized ipp if the 9.7" pro ends up not having a pencil, or has a price jump so that the larger one isn't much more expensive.

I definitely think the larger ipp would be a landscape device though - my surface does feel too 'tall' in portrait mode.

I've been an avid portrait mode fan with all my devices from day one. Except the Pro. I forced myself to use it landscape from the onset and havent looked back since. The perfect orientation i think :)

Surface is longer than the iPP, so the iPP shouldn't feel quite so "tall." I like using the iPP in portrait when reading. I tend to use the iPP in portrait more often than the Air, because on the iPP, web pages look good in portrait, whereas on the Air, I needed to go landscape to see the text comfortably.
