Indeed it isn't a firsr Gen product, it's a continuation of the iPad air. Problem is the bigger screen has brought to light ( and I think even the air suffers this problem) the fact apple wastes to much screen size and power with a dumb OS that is far too simple.
By your definition the iPad 1 was not a first gen product but a continuation of the iPod Touch and iPhone. :p

There's too much new technology and differences in the iPad Pro to NOT consider it a first gen product.

I'd say it's equally likely that production of the A9X is constrained enough that adding it to the iPad Air 3 would present production challenges.

iPad Air 3 would have just had the A9 not A9X

That's unlikely. The 9.7" iPad still has a lot of pixels to drive and Apple knows that not everyone has use for a big iPad. It's easy for them to keep the pencil/keyboard as the distinction between the two platforms.

Because you know there's enough supply of the A9 for iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and an iPad Air 3? And if there was an Air 3 with A9 people would still be complaining that it didn't have an A9X.

Call it whatever you like for now. It will be a higher clocked version of the A9, not has high clocked as the iPP because of thermal limitations in the smaller case, but higher clocked than my iPhone 6s. It's not like the A9x has a third core like the A8x, the larger case of the iPP allows for greater thermal envelope, the Air 3 will be somewhere in between for the same reason.

Not unlikely:

1.an altered a9 soc at a lower clockspeed with 2gb and perhaps an altered gpu that is between iphone6s and ipad pro.

2. Or perhaps a regular a9 with the regular iphone 6s gpu from the 6s but clocked at 2.26 ghz(same clock ipad pro).

This will still be quite a bit faster than the regular iphone 6s.

My bet is on option 2.

The air 3 will probably be a little thinner than the air 2, and has less battery cap. than the ipad pro(or even the air2).
And the air just is not the flagship ipad anymore.

It will never get the same soc as the ipad pro, unless the ipad air 3 is released at the same time as the pro2 or later.

My guess is that the air3 will be released in april/may though, and will be presented to the public together with the apple watch 2 and retina macbook( regular, air en pro)

The silver lining is... Apple will probably release Air 3 and Mini 5 at the same time using similar chipset. (A9 clocked at different speed)

People complaining should get the ipad pro then .
Ipad air 3 will get a faster clocked a9, not the a9x.
That is ample power for the ipad 3. Will get you about 2800(single) 5000 geekbench(multicore) and 29000 futuremark.

you think Apple will put a weaker A9 chip in the iPad Air 3 when the iPhone 7 will have an A10?

Further optimized iOS for iPad Pro
3D Touch
Faster Touch ID
Apps actually optimized for the iPad Pro
Lighter
Thinner
Possibly an even more accurate Apple Pencil

This thing has potential, but I'm not beta testing this for an year

Is it confirmed that this didn't get second generation TouchID? I can understand lack of 3D Touch to an extent.. but this just seems silly.

Yes, it's confirmed it doesn't have the improved touch ID sensor that's in the 6S, really zero excuse for Apple, especially in the "Pro" product

Wow, that is ridiculous. If there ever were a case to be made for Apple holding things back for next year's model unnecessarily, this would be it.

It's not even like 3D touch where you could argue Apple is just testing the waters before a complete widespread deployment of the technology. 2nd generation Touch ID is just the next in the line of a progression of basic hardware improvements.

and I don't want to hear about supply constraint BS, iPhone 6S is already readily available and Apple won't be producing iPad Pro's at the same level as the iPhone or iPad Air
