Could you post the model number of your printer?

And if your printer does have wifi network capability, then what you do is find the printer from your iOS device. You go to Settings > wifi, and turn wifi on, and see if your printer shows up as a wifi network.
My older HP Envy printer had instructions onscreen for setting up an ad hoc network. You need to set up the printer wifi network from the printer then join that network from a phone or iPad.

I did also play with setting up a printer network with the Airport Express, just because I was interested in the possibility of doing it. IIRC, there were various error lights that blinked (because there is no internet access) but the process was simple.

I will do that when I get back home.

Wow. I ordered Airport Express last night and I might not even NEED it? Haha - oh well it was only $50 for the refurb.

I do have an AirPrint enabled Epson printer that I just purchased. My HP might have done it, but it was giving me fits.

So I put my wifi on on my iPad or phone and then do wifi setup on the printer and see if the printer finds my pad?

Well geez, might as well jump in :)

1st off, great job of not getting frustrated and just giving up!

Your new Airport will be the wifi "hub" for which all of your wifi enabled devices will connect to.
Once connected, they can then all "see" each other and share information (like the ability to print).
The working distance will vary but could be up to a hundred feet or more.

Your printer might have a wifi "hub" built-in allowing direct connections. While that's great for printing, having a central hub (the airport) will allow all wifi devices to inter-operate which is much more flexible and given your desire to learn new things, will allow you to do more cool things.

You could buy some wifi enabled speakers, and play your music to different speakers in different rooms. Get the Philips Hue lights and control lighting. All kinds of things...

My parents do the exact thing you're trying to do. They live out in the middle of nowhere, and all they have for Internet is their Verizon cellular connection on their phones and iPad. They have a wifi router though, and it's used specifically for printing. They set up a network and only connect to it when they need to print something.

I'm sorry I didn't get this posted earlier - house full of people tonight. I really appreciate all of your help and feel badly I'm not on top of my game.

My printer is an Epson XP-320

Yeah. One would hope. ;-p

But wow. You'd think I would already know this. I'm definitely gonna try it today, but my airport express did ship, and now I'm pretty pumped about getting it!

Well I am clearly illiterate. I have looked through all the printer info I have and online, and I can't figure out how to do this directly. When I try and do anything, it can't find a network. I have no idea how to create a findable network without using my hotspot.

I have wifi turned on on my iPP, but it just keeps asking me to connect to my phone hotspot (which is NOT turned on), and when I try and follow the steps with the printer, it finds nothing.

I guess I'm gonna have to wait for airport express, and hopefully I can figure THAT out!

I don't think I ever saw the wifi direct option - guess I'll go back and follow those instructions.

I DID get my airport express yesterday though, so hopefully I can get something up and running when I get back in town Monday.

Ok so I am now connected wirelessly to my printer through the direct connection; working on actually printing something now.
[doublepost=1464911690][/doublepost]I actually printed a document!! The only thing is I couldn't figure out how to get my document saved to where I could access it, so I took a screen shot then printed that and it came out tiny. Weird. Progress though.

Yay! Good to hear you are getting somewhere!

What format is this document, and how was it created / where did you get it from?

I'm sorry I am just now updating this. I JUST finally finished hooking up my Airport Express. It came in over a month ago! It's been a rough year so far, and the last month just hasn't been an improvement.

I do not remember the format of that doc that printed so tiny, but I do now have my Airport setup, and I printed a document (full size too) from my Pages app on my iPad.

I just wanted to come back and say thank you for all the help. I'm SO excited to have this up and running. I feel like I'm gradually getting a little less technologically challenged.
