Given how people haven't upgraded their iPad 2 even after 4+ years, it's not surprising at all that there's no perceptible improvement going from the Air 2 to the Air 3 (going to ignore Apple marketing terminology).

Apple hasn't really introduced anything new with the Air 3. The iPad Pro, on the other hand, is a very significant change, right down to the form factor.

Heck, at the very moment, the iPad Pro is much better value with the all around discounts. You can even get 20% off the full sized smart keyboard + pencil @ AT&T.

But also realize that you can sell that Air 2 128 for $450-500 right now if its in really good shape.

So you're really talking a $250 money investment at the end of the day.

I don't know. Maybe I bring too much of my own perspective with my comments sometimes and it can be jarring to some people. I can be a little too blunt sometimes.

I can understand where you are coming from.

There's tons of information out there to help potential buyers get a better understanding of a product. So, when someone post about having misjudged a product... It doesn't make sense when there's plenty of articles & videos that can provide customers with answers going in.

But then... I prefer going in with my own experience which maybe the original post felt. People want to judge the product how they see it fit regardless of what some reviewer or author felt... And I can respect that. We all have our own perspective.

Yeah, I find it's cheaper to stay on the upgrade cycle and sell and upgrade the iPad every year. I knew the performance for basic every day tasks wasn't going to be that noticeably different from the Air 2, which is still a solid iPad. I'm happy with the cpu bump, display improvements, better speakers and pencil support.

No regrets!

I think people forget come next iPad in 2017 that an Air 2 will be worth $250-300ish (it will be 2.5 years old come this fall and the 9.7 Pro will have discounts etc come holiday time) so it will cost a lot more our of pocket to get back into the upgrade cycle with the newest device.

You put in $250 now to get into the new device and then $250 next year to upgrade, its the same difference as putting $500 on top of the $250-300ish to go back to the newest 128gb.

Honestly, I don't know if they'll even be able to get that much. With the current air 2 price reduction plus any sales on top of that which are sure to come along at least by holiday season, the market is going to be flooded with cheap air 2 options. I sold my 128gb wifi Air 1 for $260 in perfect condition when the Small Pro was announced. It hurts to hear people getting $400 for the same spec'd Air 2 these days. I'm sure the same thing will happen with the Pro 2.

Honestly, I'm regretting not having upgraded to the Air 2 back in 2014. If I knew it was going to take Apple 15 months to release an updated 9.7" tablet, would've just gotten both the Air 2 and the Pro 9.7.

AGREED ... but I do like the precision fit of the combination.

I don't know, I'm torn myself. I usually use a Smart Cover by itself but this gen I was forced to go with a smart case as well due to the extra overlap of the new design. On the plus side the midnight blue combo looks good

Well yeh I wanted to try to use round numbers.

The point really was you take a small hit now and upgrade to the Pro and then sell the Pro next year for Pro 2 and take small hit, or take a huge hit next year.

Either way it's about the same, but in the meantime you're using the old device. So it doen't really make sense.

And that also depends what one paid for their Air 2. Some may have gotten it at holiday time at $150 off, which is still $50 below current retail lowered the $100. So they're even better off selling it now while it has value.

Hell if I got a 128gb Air 2 at $150 off, so $699-150 or $550, and I could get $450-500ish on Swappa right now still I would sell it and run. $450-475-490 etc is still more than fair for a mint condition 128gb Air 2 as well, they still retail for $599 right now. Someone will jump on it to save $100.

I don't feel anything is really different from my Air 2 aside from the screen feeling smooth and not attracting fingerprints.
If you're not feeling much difference, then by all means, return it. Listen to your gut, which seems to be telling you that you'll be happy with your Air 2.

Once the rumors start rumbling I'll start preparing to sell my iPad. It's always best to sell before Apple announces the product... Gives a better chance of getting the most money possible.
Meanwhile, I cannot be without my iPad. The utility I derive from it trumps any increase in resale value. Mind, I don't like to deal with hassles of selling (definitely not on CraigsList and eBay/PayPal takes a huge chunk) so my devices just get passed down to family members.

Honestly, I don't actually follow a schedule for upgrading. I just upgrade when I feel like it.

I've done plenty of Craigslist sales... More than I can imagine. I know going in I'll be without my iPad for a week or two. It's just the nature of it all, but I know it'll be worth it in the end when I get my hands on newly released model.

You mention wanting to have both the Air 2 & 9.7 iPP... May I ask why?

It was not an upgrade from your Air 2. It is an Air 2 with a True Tone gimmick and the ability to use a stylus.

Bought the iPad Air 16GB in 2013 for universal LTE for an international trip. I cheaped out on storage because I expected the Air 2 and mini 3 to have 256GB and was planning to upgrade to one of those the next year. When the Air 2 was announced, there was no 256GB option and the mini 3 ended up a huge disappointment so ended up skipping those. My primary iPad for the past 2.5 years has been an iPad Air 16GB LTE which for me, was just way too little storage space. That iPad regularly has less than 1GB free space and I've had to delete apps on a number of occasions just so I can update Excel and Numbers (even had to delete Word altogether). I typically had to carry both the iPad 4 128GB and Air 16GB if I knew I was going someplace with iffy internet.

I really wish I had just ponied up the $$ to save myself the frustration (either back in 2013 to upgrade the Air to 128GB or in 2014 to buy an Air 2 128GB) instead of wasting funds on other stuff. I get enough usage out of the iPad that it would've been well worth the $20/week I would've spent.

I kinda feel this is like saying that the iPad 4 is not an upgrade over the iPad 3 and the only difference between the two is the Lightning connector.

And what? Isn't the next version after the next version going to be better than the next version?
I think you miss the point. Every version is going to be better than its predecessor, that is just common logic. It is about HOW much better is it and is it worth the upgrade costs. The answer with this one was easily a no. People are hoping the next iPad offers enough to warrant an upgrade.

The answer may be no for you, not no for everyone. The inclusion of pencil support is a big deal for a lot of people for starters

The 9.7 isn't enough space for pencil use outside of small note taking. It only took me about 30 minutes of testing in the Apple store to figure this out. If you are buying for pencil use, the 12.9 is the iPad that you should buy. The pencil support on the 9.7 is tacked on and the small canvas makes it awkward to use in any meaningful way outside of making a grocery list. I understand a lot of people are going to want to defend their purchase of this 9.7 pro after investing in it, however this is just good ol' Confirmatory bias at play.

Had the Apple Pencil worked with the iPad Air 2 or if the 9.7" Pro did NOT work with the Apple Pencil, I would had held off the purchase. That one accessory completely changes my use of this device. I purchased mine on launch day and have not found 1 pang of remorse for buying it. The pro is precisely what I have wanted in a tablet since the very first iPad launched.

Constantly surprised by the number of people that read threads they are not interested in....and b**** about it...
What says they aren't interested?

The only reason I'd grab the 9.7 Pro is if I still had an Air1, Air2 is more than useful for me. Sure I'd love some top firing speakers that don't get blocked when I'm resting the iPad on me in bed. But I'll live.
