they can skip the rear camera for my money. who'd want it on a device this size? a USB-c port would be nice. would give it more ports than the macbook. but the main thing I want is good stylus support. day 1 purchase for me if that happens.

Having played with a Surface Pro 3, and a Dell Venue 8 Pro HD (7000), it would be nice to have an equivalent Apple product. At least 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, stylus support, USB 3, hdmi, detachable (or even foldaway) keyboard, etc...

I was surprised how decent premiere pro and after effects ran on the venue. I wouldn't want to render a project out with it, but to pull in footage and do some basic edits and motion graphics on a device that can also be used as a tablet would be nice. I have a Mac Pro, rMBP and iPad air, but would easily be able to replace the rMBP and iPad with such a device. The real ports would also be a bonus.

I would just go and pick up a venue, but it would be inconvenient losing the integration the ipad currently gives me, and I prefer a real unix prompt to command prompt / cygwin (and of course, prefer OSX to Windows).

I can see reasons why it would be a bad idea to run full OSX on a tablet like device (ie apps not being written properly for touch and limitations of the device) but after using a windows based one, I would really like an OSX model.

if this is really going to happen I'd be happy to sell my Air 2 and get the pro model, but ONLY if the apple stylus will be pressure sensitive, as an artist I'd love to finally have the best mobile art app "procreate" ( sadly iOS only ) supported by a native accessory that would offer precise control over your strokes.

Fingers Crossed, oh what the hell, toes crossed aswell!

+1, but Stylus with pressure sensitivity please! ;)

This is just inertia in the reporting. When it was supposed to launched at the beginning of the year it made sense that would not get new processor generation. Now that is supposed to launch in the fall, alongside new iPhones and presumably new iPad Airs, it of course doesn't make sense to expect it to launch with a lesser processor than a new iPad Air.

Because the previous rumours said A8X, this spec is simply copied over to new articles that describe other rumoured aspects of the device.

Gotcha, that makes more sense. I forgot that the initial rumors were for a February/Spring release.

I'm excited and looking forward to this a lot.

The first REAL change they'd made to the iPad in any substantial way since the iPad1 was first launched, and why they have become boring.

Always wanted a larger screen, so, looking forward to this.

My only fear, and it's a BIG one if that this is going to come out, and it's going to be, wow it's good, apart from the XXX they'd totally screwed up.

I don't know what the XXX is going to be, but my worry is, there is going to be one aspect of it that lets it down in some major way.
Some deliberately screwy decision by Ive to hold something back, limit something or fit something below par into it.

Please let me be wrong, and it's excellent all round with no in your face weak points.

I'd rather have a Surface Pro 3, to be honest.
The Surface Pro 3 is excellent hardware and OS that continues to be hampered by sub-par software offerings. The situation has improved significantly since the release of Windows 8.0 but there are still some touch-optimized modern UI apps that I need that are not available.

I've been extensively using my Acer Aspire Switch 11 (think of it as a poor man's SP3) for the last month. TERRIFIC as a notebook. Love the ports that are on-board the tablet portion. Love the active stylus support. Love the ability to pop off the screen and use it as a tablet. But the apps are still (relatively speaking) the weak link.

The situation has improved enough that I can definitely see myself purchasing an SP3 or SP4 to replace my iPad 4 and 11" MBA sometime in the future. It's that close (for me).

iPad pro is the new macbook.
If that is Apple's logic, then it is a... Fail.

A 12" iPad with active digitizer, support for BT mouse, keyboard cover, and multi-window (similar to what I have with the GTab Pro 8.4) would be ideal for my needs. The richness of the app ecosystem is what keeps me going back to Apple tablets.

If the iPad Pro release rumor is true I doubt that it would be released with last year's A8. Apple releases a new processor every year so they should be prepared to include the A9 in the iPad Pro. Also, I would be surprised to see the iPad Pro come with any accessory besides the power adapter. If they make a stylus it will probably be available to purchase separately for $79 or $99. :)

I hope the "pro" iPad has more than 2gb of ram. Regardless if the critics say it does or doesn't need it.

It only "doesn't need it" until Apple puts it in. Then, it will need it and wishes for any other amount of RAM- including the former RAM standard- will be entirely wrong.

In another thread, a rumored new :apple:TV doesn't need 4K. There's 50 reasons why, which are pretty much the very same reasons why- when gen 2 :apple:TV was the current product- no one needed a 1080p :apple:TV.

In another thread, NFC technology was stupid or a gimmick that 99% don't want or need in a phone. Then, Apple adopts NFC and we want to boycott stores that won't let us pay with Apple Pay.

In another thread, iPads do not need front-facing cameras when iPads were the new thing. There were 50 passionate reasons why such a camera would be stupid in an iPad. Then, Apple rolled out iPad 2 with FaceTime and the biggest reason to upgrade was... can you guess?

<anything not in current Apple hardware for sale> is "not needed" until Apple puts it in. Then it can magically become THE "shut up and take my money" reason to buy the new model.

I'm with you on this particular topic. A multitasking, 64-bit OS with pinched RAM almost doesn't make sense. I hope a "pro" model brings more RAM too. It will probably be priced so that unit cost can't really be an excuse.

Why release a 12" ultra-portable laptop and another 12" tablet? It would've been way more interesting if it was just one device.

To make the iPad "Pro", Apple needs to pay attention more to software issues than hardware ones.

The education market is declining the iPads because Apple hasn't addressed the needs of the schools...major, major blunder on their part.

Not to say that there aren't a few software issues that need to be addressed but the the troubles with iPad programs for education were more because of mismanagement of their pilot programs, costly and limiting licensing from publishers, and because these are high-cost devices being given to kids who won't take care of them or will just steal them. That has nothing to do with a 'blunder' on Apple's part, nor is it related to the software quality of iOS.

I use my iPad for education (granted, at the post-secondary level) and it has been nothing short of indispensable and extremely effective. If an iPad comes out with a higher resolution screen that has the same screen real-estate as a letter sized sheet of paper, and some ability to use a real, honest to god stylus for writing, there is no question that I'm buying it on launch day. That would be perfect.

Gosh, I hate this one the most out of all of them. Sure, the amount of people who have 4K TV's are pretty small. Sure, there's not a ton of 4K content out. But this is the next gen Apple TV. It makes little sense for them not to include support. Wouldn't you want this thing to be "future-proof"?

"4K isn't there yet. No need for it. Redundant. Pointless. Waste of resources to include it." Yet Apples releases a Mac with a 5K display. Kinda ironic isn't it?

But now I'm just getting way off-topic lol!

I want to see the keyboard covers. That's what I need in the pro line. Also, I need multi window capability (from a user perspective, true multi tasking).

I love my ipad air 2 with a 3rd party keyboard cover. but could see me upgrade again if the above two items are addressed by apple.

I know, this is my personal use case, but I think/hope others will agree.

I have an iPad Retina and a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2"

I find I do most of my web surfing, game playing, etc. on the Note Pro.

I only bought that because I wanted a larger tablet and Apple doesn't offer one.

I do go back to the iPad for playing videos, for some reason the Note Pro lags on embedded videos. I also use the iPad for messages and facetime, etc.

Other than the lagging embedded videos and the extra weight of a larger tablet, the Note Pro is a fantastic tablet. If Apple betters that they'll have another awesome product that I will likely buy and sell the Samsung.

I'm just curious how expensive it will be. And if they offer a 16gb version they should be dragged to an alley and smacked around, it's time for Apple to stop offering 16gb versions of anything.

Heh... this is a digression from the real thread, but I wanted to chime in that having a 5K display two feet from your face is a lot more useful than having a 4K display 10 feet from your face. I'm a hi-dpi resolution whore and want all the pixels I can get on my displays that I compute on. Having crisp text when reading a lot is much easier on the eyes. Being able to see details in photos I'm working on is really helpful and nice.

Despite this, I download all my movies in 720p. I literally can not see a difference between 720p and 1080p at the 12+ feet away that my 55" TV sits. I can, however, see a difference in how long it takes to load the video, seek through it, and transcode it.

This would be exacerbated even more at 4K. Sure, it looks great when staring at a screen from six-inches away in a store and one can barely make out the pixels, but when sitting on a couch at the back of the room he/she will not be able to see the difference between 1080p and 2160p on a screen that is less than 100 inches diagonal. (See http://referencehometheater.com/2013/commentary/4k-calculator/ ). And current mobile processors will have a hell of a time pushing that many pixels smoothly. That is why we don't need a 4K apple TV.

Would you rather have a more pixels you can't even see and a slow and jerky user interface and janky video playback, or would you rather just have a devices that works at the same resolution as the vast, vast majority of current content and have everything work smooth-as-butter?

Don't worry... 4K will come when it is ready. How else will Apple get you to buy the 5th Generation Apple TV? ;)
It won't be too long but I don't think it's today :)

Prediction:

With the iPad Pro, Apple will release its own external keyboard case based on the ultra-thin keys of the new Retina Macbook. It will be like MS Surface but with real keyboard key action.

Just get a Logitech Ultrathin keyboard cover--which predates the Surface and has real keys. I haven't tried the latest model, but they seem to have gotten really good.

(But when a new iPad comes out, I wouldn't jump on the first Ultrathin keyboard for that model: Logitech seems to make some tweaks later in the product lifetime to fix early defects--judging by Amazon reviews.)

I know this is all speculation, but what would the stated benefit be for a iPad Pro? Okay, I get the larger screen and perhaps 2GB of RAM, but then what—snappier Safari and Angry Birds?

Unless Apple is introducing new technological capabilities specifc to a Pro edition iPad (Wacom style pressure sensitivity or pen, new class of more powerful, hybrid apps that are closer to desktop functionality, etc.), then what is the point?

There's no way this is coming out before fall at this point. They'll put it out with Mini 4 and Air 3 and it'll have an A9 chip. They're not going to put a seemingly flagship iPad out with a chip that'll be outdated in October.

yes, absolutely. a good stylus means a pressure sensitive active stylus as far as I am concerned.

People usually mean electromagnetic resonance styli, like the ones Wacom makes, but I almost wonder if Apple will find a different way to do this -- maybe they will turn it inside out by using force-touch or something.

It's probably (sadly) more likely that they'll just forgo styli and keyboards on iOS devices for the foreseeable future, though, and we'll have to rely on 3rd parties to fill the gap.
