I am going to play devils advocate and call shenanigans on your story. I will point a few details as to why I think it's bogus.

1 - Your start of your post with "At Starbucks today with a colleague, working on our new MacBooks." - what does that have to do with anything?

2 - I have been to over 50 Starbucks in my life. Not one of them has ever had carpet. Ever. For a place that serves beverages and food that are prone to spilling, dropping and the like, carpet is the LAST thing you want for a floor. They are always wood/tile.

3 - "sickening sound of aluminum and glass breaking" - Aluminum doesn't "break". unless a decent amount of force is applied. That wouldn't come from a drop.

The IPP is not easy to break and is pretty sturdy. The larger glass surfaces allows it to absorb impact much better since it flexes a bit more. Watch the videos below that pretty much show the exact OPPOSITE of what you're saying here.

Good catch!

I don't normally but AppleCare on my products. But I thought as this is such a huge screen it would be worth it this time........ Hopefully I won't ever need it though.

I usually don't either but I just got AppleCare for my Pro and I happened to ask the guy how much it would cost to repair or replace if I shattered my screen and I didn't have AC and he said $599.
So it's well worth the $99 IMO.

I only watched the first video, that's what my comment is on.. I personally honestly dislike it when someone drops it on purpose and creates damage and then says things like "wow, this is such a buggy release, apple should really fix it". Yeah, apple, put in some one inch dampers and a springboard to catch these accidental drops, and another inch bumper case around it to protect this ultrathin huge screen stretched tech layer static sensitive screen between the glass and all that stuff.. because 6 foot drop is all it takes. so buggy..

OP is an obvious troll, but I almost dropped mine the first day, the size took a bit to get used to. Purchased Applecare immediately just in case.

Yea I call bs too. My daughter chucked mine off the couch yesterday on a normal carpeted floor. Not a mark. She's almost 2 so it's not just a normal drop either.

Heavier weight of the iPP automatically means a greater impact force when dropped. I don't think it is more fragile.

True to a point, though it's no more heavier than the iPad 2/3/4, which I've dropped a fair share of times over the years. The iPP might be slightly more durable than even them, since it's weight is distributed across a wider surface.

For now, I'd write this off more as the guy being tremendously unlucky, rather than the iPP being extra fragile.
