I'm glad to hear they're dumping MiniLED, my 12.9" developed a dead spot (see the "smudge" in the middle near the bottom of the screen) and Apple want a fortune to fix it. I suppose it's my own fault for not paying extra for Apple Care, it developed the issue a few weeks after the warranty ran out.

Don’t blame yourself for not buying AppleCare blame Apple for their bare minimum warranty and poor quality control on $1K+ devices.

Here is what I am hoping for (not in any particular order):
  • OLED
  • Landscape camera
  • Desktop class browser
  • MK with function keys and escape key
  • Clamshell mode
A landscape-oriented camera is a challenge because the magnet and charging coil assembly for the Apple Pencil 2 takes up a fair amount of space inside the chassis exactly where the camera would go; that's why the 10th generation base iPad has a landscape camera (no charging coils) but the Air and Pro do not. I'd personally prefer Apple not move the pencil's mounting/charging location.

Not sure if it will be worth upgrading from my 12.9 I pad pro 5th gen will have to see what else they add.

Landscape camera are key to use it in Office way, the centre camera function are to annoying to stand long time. If used with keyboard as an office devices for Teams, Zoom and other solution it is needed to move the camera.

Wow, that sucks. I bought my 12.9 M1 at launch and renewed the AC+ when the original 2 years ran out May this year. Happy to pay the £7.99 p/m for the “just in case”

OLED sucks especially because of burn-in which is not yet solved. Beside, there isn't any advantage over mini-LED in terms of professional uses.
Burn-in is a real issue but it tends to be more problematic on desktop operating systems that have static, persistent user interface elements (the macOS menu bar and dock, the taskbar on Windows and various Linux distros). With an iPad or iPhone it's less of an issue because most apps have full screen unique user interfaces; the content of the screen is regularly changing so it doesn't have a chance to produce burn in.

In my experience, once you see OLED, you don't go back. My literal first OLED device was whatever iPhone had it first. Even with the small screen size, it was a revelation for me. Next, the TV was upgraded. Then my desktop monitor. Of course, as soon as relatives visited and saw the OLED in action, several are planning their next purchase to be an OLED. It's just that good. I regret not getting OLD on my bedroom backup TV, but it's still nicer and rather new so I can't justify the replacement.

iPads? No thanks. My kids each have iPads (Air). I would never in a million years trust them with an OLED screen. You really don't need to baby them, but they would be abused by kids who don't think to press the lock button and regularly leave static games running on accident. The only people I know with iPads have them for their kids.

I would not expect OLED iPads to be great sellers. I could be wrong, just my opinion.

I had a PC laptop from Asus with OLED and it is not the best. The screen was good, but, Microsoft did not recognize OLED, so you had to go through the ASUS utility to adjust brightness. They said burn in was a problem with OLED and you had to take measures to reduce the possibility. No icons on the desktop, hiding the taskbar, etc. I have the iPad Pro 12.9 with the mini LED and it is the best screen I have laid my eyes on. I would take mini LED over OLED any day. Maybe Apple will do it better, but the tech just is not there in OLED.

What causes that? Must be a very small segment of the population since everything is oled now. I def didnt notice a diff switching from lcd to oled

Uhh, really? Can’t really speak for iPads as I don’t use them much. But there was a huge difference going from LCD to OLED back when the iPhone X appeared.

Don’t really care at this point. Can’t imagine ever buying another iPad.

Is this (burn-in) really still an issue with modern OLED displays? I know it could happen on older OLED TVs, but I’ve never heard of it in a phone or tablet.

Well yeah the blacks were finally black, which i loved. Got an oled tv the same year and love that too.

Sold my iPad Pro mini LED. Blooming doesn’t bother me. My TV is mini LED, in a bright room and I love it. I just found the screen ate through my battery and the size was big for my preference and usage of video watching. An 11” OLED would solve those problems for me.

Watching movies in bed now with a pro max.

There's a guy on YouTube that left his OLED Nintendo Switch on for a whole year on a static image and at the end of that you could see some minor burn on the screen, usually only visible when displaying a full screen of a primary colour.

So unless you've got some very specific use case that requires keeping your screen on at max brightness on a static image most of the time, it should never be an issue and not worth worrying about.

Can the charging coil not simply be moved to the right by an inch? OK the pencil will be off centre - that could be rectified by a new pencil. I don’t see this as a huge issue considering we are talking about a new iPad i.e. an opportunity to re-engineer, not like they need to reconfigure the existing model.

“It seems more likely that the next iPad Pro models would be announced at WWDC in June or later, but Apple's plans could still change.”
Gurman's speculations ≠ Apple's plans! 🙈

Yet, of course, whatever Apple's plans are, which Gurman doesn't know, they could change!

The only people I know with iPads have them for their kids.

You need to get out more! 😁 Just kidding.

We know gobs of folks, of all ages, from youngsters to researchers, professors to elderly grandparents, employed and unemployed, professionals and not, that own, use, and love their iPads.

They're not just for kids! Even Gurman must have said that sometime! ‼️

Im all for better screen technologies... but more interested in better efficiency.. it's one component that is a big power draw.

Yes, the inky blacks are nice, but their LCD panels already have amazing contrast ratios.

OLED keeps advancing which is why Apple moving w/ OLED. It's better than the miniLED right now. It can get just as bright as miniLED but w/ no bloom issues. This is miniLED biggest weakness, bloom. It has a hard time showing both deep blacks with bright white next to one another. Plus OLED literally can turn off each pixels when it needs to. miniLED cannot do this. On top of all of this pros, it saves more battery too.

You must not know about OLED if you think burn-in exist. There's a youtube video of a guy running a Switch (which is using Samsung OLED screen). He left a static image at full brightness for like 6 months (24/7) and no burn-ins. You're safe. No person will ever do this w/ their ipad.

MicroLED or nothing.

I will definitely not get a new iPad or iPhone until it’s all MicroLED.

No point anyway since with the current screens, and oled, I get headaches and everything is blurry when I look up from these devices.
You're gonna wait a decade for it. They can't make it small for a phone yet or bring the cost down. It's still far far away. By than, the pros of MicroLED will be wiped away by all the advancement in OLED. OLED weakness before is that it couldn't get bright enough but now it's super bright now.

Two of the mostly same device to switch between a few inches throughout the day?
Possibly. Maybe the 12.9 will sit on the desk for most of the day, while the mini will sit on the nightstand most of the day.

I attribute this to better consumer awareness. Even my recently retired coworkers now on CNN or Fox News all day know that an OLED is not for them.

The testing I've read say they are less susceptible, but you can still make it happen if you're not careful. It's not a consideration for my daily driver devies, but I have some home from an 8 hour workday to find an iPad wedged between couch cushions on a static screen of some free-to-download game. How long was it there? Probably at least a few hours. That's a bit too risky for me.

Now, if they cover image retention under monthly Apple Care, I could be convinced to try it.

Wrong comparison. We are talking about the professional monitors and Nintendo switch is way smaller than iPad Pro's screen. This is why OLED aren't really widely being used for professional monitors and they still lack important features such as high sustainable brightness, power consumption, color accuracy, price, and more.

Whoever say OLED is fine for professional uses is totally ignorant.
