Off the iPad? Thanks for playing, try again.

I pulled that number off the top of my head. Now you're going to make me do a little research and math ... Let's see:

According to this:
http://www.statista.com/statistics/269915/global-apple-ipad-sales-since-q3-2010/

Apple has sold about 282 million iPads so far. Assuming an average price of $500 and 38% margin (the average margin Apple reported in the last year), that's $53 billion so far. Not $100 billion... but not exactly chump change!

I think Apple will take it, even if they ultimately top out at *only* $70 billion profit when all is said and done. :D

The only thing "great" about the Surface Pro is that it runs Desktop Win32 apps but then if that's what you're buying it for then it defeats the purpose of buying a tablet. It becomes a glorified ultrabook. If you compare the quality of tablet, touch-based apps between the two devices, then the iPad has a much richer app ecosystem, not only in terms of quantity of apps but quality of apps as well. Will that change with Windows 10? We'll have to wait and see.

I use many desktop applications in tablet mode--mostly design applictions. I doubt the availablity of touch apps in the windows store will ever compare to the mac ecosystem. But I don't really feel in any way contrained by this.

I'm skeptical if Apple will return to near bankruptcy but I wouldn't be surprised to see Forstall return to be CEO of Apple.
Why? What makes him CEO material? And if he was all that why did Steve promote Tim Cook over him? And why did Tim Cook fire him? Cook doesn't seem like the type to get rid of good people.

In 10 years Scott Forstall will return to take Apple from near bankruptcy just like Steve did in the late 90s. Mark my words.

I'd be suprised by this, but there are a lot of examples of great companies suddenly falling from grace (Nokia is a good example).

I heard once how billions of Apple's often mentioned cash reserves are held in off-shore accounts and would not make financial sense repatriating. They might seem rich, but their overheads must be enormous and I can see how that could turn very quickly.

He was promoted by mistake as well as Scott firing was a mistake. Cook is smug, he can't stand anyone who has his own opinion different from the one Cook has. And Forstall was exactly the guy with his own opinion who could stand for it. He was fired after he didn't agree to sign Maps apologies letter. Not the easiest guy to work with but Steve was exactly the same. And they both had a vision and delivered great results. And that would make Scott a great CEO.

He's going to come back and do what? Bring back felt and leather to iOS? Take away control center, extensions, handoff and force touch?
He'll bring back great UI and quality control. Leather probably was too much as well as podcast app, but overall iOS and OS X design and usability were great and I mean great. Think about app folders on iOS for example. How it was before and how it is now.

Scott has taste just as Steve had and he can make his team produce great results as we all seen in the past. Just as Steve could do the same thing. The one who's in charge of current iOS/OS X UI doesn't have taste, and quality slipped considerably.

Why he should "take away force touch" is beyond me.

PS.
I decided to read your reply to my post once in while, thinking you'd write something nice and constructive, but no... So I'll keep ignoring it. Bye.

I wonder if this is still Apple's attitude/thinking towards styli?
If it applies to all touchscreen devices/screen sizes – or if they think phones and tablets are different?

I'd like for them to make an official stylus and wonderful built in hard/software-support and storage for it – it doesn't have to be included with the devices, but for people who wants it, make it available.
He was clearly referring to phones when he said that. If he said "who wants to use a fork?" when unveiling his own line of sushi would you expect he means forks and food just don't go together? People need to give this a rest.

Is apple basically doing what it did last time without Steve Jobs? Where they just kept adding models of computers?
No.

Back then they were desperately trying to create market share when they had so little of it. A misguided effort.

Today they have so much market share that they must expand to satisfy its needs. A well calculated effort.

Today's expansion of the product lines is nothing like what they were doing back then. Both in scale and in efficacy.

Right now, I have mixed feelings about the "theroretical" return of Forstall, but if Apple's current fortunes begin to slide significantly someday, I would entertain the possibility.

I'm trying to imagine a situation where the only person in the world who can fix it is one Scott Forstall.

There are a couple reasons my work place won't buy the current iPad to give to scientists / workers in the field. They could be convinced to go with an iPad in line of business with...

  • Higher nit (light intensity units) for viewing in bright light
  • Sapphire screen for durability (is that possible?)
  • Loooong battery -- a 12.9 inch screen should have a 12.9 inch batter so that's solved
  • USB-c to hook up tons of peripherals and write to flash drive
  • Multitasking (solved)
  • Built in NFC RF maybe barcode reader

- Higher nit, that usually kills the battery. Even they allow it, you may not want to use it that way. The latest Air 2 has a bonded anti-reflective screen which should make it more visible in daylight than previous Ipads. Did you look into them?
- Sapphire right now in a screen that big sold at this volume? Considering the very large size of that screen, shattering it would be a distinct possibility. Not sure if its worth it really. I'd call it improbable.
- Battery life should be great unless the tablet is 4mm thick or they push the CPU to the max. Does a pro battery really need to last longer than 12h?
- Who knows when it comes to USB-C, will they really put a lightning and a USB-C port in the same device?
- NFC or RF reader, probably not.

Pretty sure when Jobs came back he added new models of computers.

He worked on the iMac with Jony Ive, i believe that's how they became friends, Jony Ive was about to quit at Apple until he met Steve Jobs apparently.

I don't get why they made those new Macbooks if they're gonna do this. I'm sure the price will be the same and this will be more useful than those. Also as someone pointed out, yup they're repeating their mistake again by adding too many products. They're a bean counting company now it seems.

Thank goodness they are sticking with the Lightning connector. If they went USB-C on this, it would have been a total screw up with the MFi crowd.

That would have been a forced obsolescence of third party peripherals comparable to the "screw the third parties" mindset of the Palm Universal Connector -> Multi-Connector fiasco.

Somehow, I think there is a USB-C <--> Lightning interconnect brewing on a bench in Cupertino with an FPGA at the heart of it all.

The story I believe is that Steve was in a "sanity search" inside Apple looking to find those with as much of a passion for product development he had. One of Steve's techniques was going to personnel and actually looking at employee reviews of people with low marks. He was looking for those that were "arguing with managers too much" whom also cared about product development instead of "corporate harmony" to run things.

Was told that many whom quit or were dismissed out of this mindset were approached by Steve himself and offered to come back to Apple. Many times, they were replacing their former managers that Steve fired himself. Jony, was one of the "gems" he found from a process called "corporate liposuction" where he trimmed out the middle management fat -- thus making the company lean again.

More American companies need to do this. Was told Gerstner did this himself at IBM firing some whom were about to collect pensions with nearly 40 years inside IBM starting from the mainframe domination days.

Did you actually work at Apple? Otherwise I'm calling your description of Cook BS. If it was true why would any senior executive stay at Apple? Also taste is subjective. As far as I'm concerned iOS 6 and prior were tacky. And I have no problem with usability on iOS or the Watch.

Because the MacBook Air will eventually go away. So you'll have the MacBook for general consumers and those who prioritize portability over power and the MacBook Pro for the power users. Once the price comes down on the MacBook and the MacBook Pro sheds some weight the MacBook Air is history.

The "Pro" should be in the software, not the size of the hardware. We need more capable modern OS, not iPhone OS made larger

Calm down son. You don't know Tim Cook, and you know it, as we do.
