If they would just add mouse support for this iPad, then they would have me sold. I would like to be able to use this at my desk on a stand with a keyboard and mouse, and then pick it up and use it as a tablet when I want to.

A bigger screen is always nicer.

Otherwise people would not buy large screen TV's they would just watch all TV and movies on mobile phones.

----------

I wish it were that simple. The bigger screen coupled with the OS is just blah.. no multitasking, can't run iMac apps. At the end of the day, it's just a tablet w/ a bigger screen with no improved functionality. How long can apple ride on their laurels?

I don't know if it would be more popular. I have an iPad 4 and an 11" MBA. If my MBA could run OSX as-is and have the ability to remove the display and start working in iOS, THAT would be a very good thing, IMO.

Well, I have an iPad, but hardly ever use it. My MacBook Air 11'' is used all the time though. Writing and producing docs, text, emails etc. are done much faster on an MBA, for me anyway. :)

I'll believe this fabled product when I see it. But it could be a step in the right direction for iPad. The one thing that seems to be holding the iPad back is it doesn't appear to be as productive as other devices. The Surface has a full desktop environment which allows you access to all programs available for Windows, allowing you to be as productive as you can be on a full desktop computer. Whereas the iPad isn't really marketed as a productive device. Well, it is...but not enough.

The iPad has to make do with apps that are designed around a touch screen interface which often removes a lot of the functionality of full desktop programs. Right now, the iPad feels like a giant iPhone or a giant iPod touch. That's all I really use mine as, it doesn't feel like a stand out device...just a bigger screen for browsing. In my opinion, Apple need to rethink the iPad and come up with something drastic. The iPad Pro may well be that change that the iPad needs. I think iPad needs its own version of iOS rather than just a 'scaled up' version. I dare say, it needs a desktop environment. I'm not saying the iPad needs to become a Mac but there have been mock ups of the iPad Pro running OS X. Maybe this is the direction iPad needs to go in.

We are clearly entering a post-desktop era. But tablets need to be a good enough replacement, offering all the same functionality...and more.

Oh, right... This mythical non productivity, despite the fact that the Ipad has a massive penetration in the enterprise.

If this is going to be considered a pro machine, it will be interesting to see what happens with the iPad version of iOS. If this is going to be turning point when it is considered a true creative or productivity tool then iOS has to evolve to facilitate it. This could be a great thing for the whole iPad family.

I hope they make it closer to OS X and less controlled by the APP Store. Not likely, but we can all hope.

For what it counts, I really don't care about a gigantic almost unusable iPad.
What I really want is a 13" MacBook air with retina display.
Not a 12".
Just a 13" MacBook air with retina display.
Is it so difficult????

You and me both, and a few thousand others! We couldn't agree more. :)

I'm more than willing to fork out a thousand plus bucks for a 13" 256gb rMBA. I mean I'm happy with my 2012 MBA but I would like a retina display as well as something that is a little faster (Safari page loading is a headache - compared to iPad Air 2). Plus a Space Grey rMBA would be super cool.

I mean there are many of us who are willing to throw our money at Apple, but Apple are kinda saying that they don't want our money. ??? Crazy!

So why didn't apple release this last month? Seems like their iPad sales are falling flat and this may be the shot in the arm that is needed
Increase sales of products with $200 margin (iPad Pro) by five millions or increase sales of products with $400 margin (iPhone Plus) by ten millions. Take your pick.

Supposedly this is the tablet form factor that Steve Jobs first targeted that became the iPhone and then the iPad. Was told the original plan was a tablet computer with a screen size 8.5" x 11" in size replacing the most common size of paper used in photocopiers.

Issue always was the cost and availability of the LCD screen. The smaller the screen, the better the supply. Hence why the first iOS product was the iPhone. As the LCD supply chain matured, the screens get larger. Looks like the supply chain is now set of the 8.5" x 11" retina LCD screen as the margins of the rMBP are making way for iPad Pro.
The problem is not the screen size, we have had thin displays of that size in laptops for years but the device weight (possibly also price). There are 20" computer displays that double as Android tablets but they are so heavy few people use them as tablets.

By now, a 12.2" iPad probably can be made at the weight of the original iPad.

Maybe these rumors are for the next generation MacBook Air, which just happens to have a lot of iPad-like features.

Hmmm, a touch screen MBA? That sounds okay, or would that be overkill?

A finger print scanner for logging on would be awesome. I had a 2008 HP laptop that had this. It was great not having to remember a password.

Downscaling would be required, no way around it unless Apple decides to upset their entire developer tools strategy. 2560x1920 is not a integral multiple of the 1024 x 768 point dimensions, so it would require rendering at 3X and then downscaling to the "2.5X" of the display. Since the physical ppi of such a display would be roughly the same as that of the Air, then the maxiPad would have a less sharp display than the Air.
No, again, the option to scale down to a 2560x1920 grid of pixels the current iPad resolution @3x would only be for compatibility or accessibility.
The plan would be, as you could see with the iPhone 6/+, a larger screen with a larger resolution, and apps supporting it with AutoLayout for an adaptive UI.
That's not the same relation as the Air and mini sharing the same resolution, and apps are then identical; the larger resolution of this iPad "Plus" would imply devs would have to support this larger resolution.

Ehm no. Why would it require 3x since the PPI would remain about the same?

With a 12.2" iPad at 2560x1920, developers would simply continue to work at 2x like they're doing on every retina iOS devices (except the iPhone 6 plus), but with a larger screen area. They'd only have to make sure their layout can adapt itself to the larger resolution. The points dimension of this devices would be 1280x960, not 1024x768.

This is exactly what is happening with the iPhone 6 (not the plus) and what happened with the 5/5S. The resolution of the 4.7" iPhone 6 is not an integer multiple of the previous iPhones resolution at all, yet it doesn't using any downscaling trick because there's no reason to, it's simply an extension of the screen estate.

Only the iPhone 6 plus works with a 3x scaling factor because Apple wanted to get over 400 PPI and reach "full HD" on a 5.5" screen. And since they could not get to 489 PPI (needed for full 1:1 pixels 3x) they had to do the downscaling thing to compensate for the lower 401 PPI screen.

Downscaling wouldn't have been necessary on the plus if they kept the same PPI as previous retina iPhones, like the 4.7" iPhone 6 did.

Oh yes, but honestly, I'd like a 12" Air 2, now, personally.
I just HATE small screens.

I totally agree. Too much screen real estate to waste on a grid of icons. Apple needs to reinvent the home screen.
What is your idea for showing all installed applications to be used instead of the current grid?

----------

But will it bend?
Only if you put in your pants pocket and sit down.

----------

I would buy one in a heartbeat if it has multi tasking or comes with OS X! Even for $1000

And with multi-tasking you mean split-screen?

Yup, without proper N-trig or Wacom support, this will be pretty much DOA among serious tablet users - ones that do require proper stylus support.

Agreed. Anticipating apple innovating a type cover and kick stand as well. The Surface pro sold about a million units in 2014. Apple sold 5-6 million macs.
And it MS sold the surface at a fairly high price point. The tablet hybrid is less niche than posters here contend

----------

MS Surface 1 and 2 had Wacom pens and the 3 is by N-Trig which leaves Wacom open to supply the pen for this device, I wonder....

Samsung owns 5% of wacom. And apple doesnt really need wacom or ntrig--they have numerous pen patents.

FYI: a micro-HDMI socket is VERY thin. So are Slimport-compliant USB ports used in the later Nexus tablets / phones, starting with the Nexus 4 and the 7 2013.
Though in principle whether you need a micro-HDMI to HDMI adaptor or a Lightning to HDMI shouldn't matter (the price difference matters but that is more a commercial decision of Apple than a technical one). Certainly, there are other limitations of the Lightning-only iPad like not being able to plug something else in, eg, a charging cable.

Idk– my iPads have served me very well over the years. I've been taking notes like this for years.

I've been writing my notes on my iPad for years using these two tools:
1. PDF Expert app ($10)
2. Adonis Jot Pro stylus ($29.99)

I've also purchased all 3 MS Surface Pros to determine if MS had finally achieved the best all around device. I returned all 3 of them.

I have used the jot, surface pro 2 and the surface pro 3. I found the jot unusable. It makes a loud tapping noise and has frequent dropouts. Your success with the jot may reflect a writing style that complements that technology.

Hopefully productivity improvements to the iPad Pro will trickle down to the regular 9.7 inch iPad?

I really don't want the regular iPad to be relegated to iPad mini status. A tablet still needs to be portable and easy to hold (IMHO) otherwise I just pull out my macbook air which will still be better for productivity than a 12.2inch iPad Pro.

My guess is that the iPad Pro will be where Apple tests things before implementing them in the more mainstream iPad. I imagine the price of the iPad Pro + size will make it a niche device but if it brings good ideas to the entire platform I am all for it.

Force Touch, Localized Haptic feedback & Thunderbolt

I would expect this to have some "Pro" features like: Force Touch like the Watch would add a new world to creative apps like Music (note velocity) and Art & Design (ink flow or line thickness). Localized Haptic feedback like Apples patent (here http://minifyurl.tk/2iK) could add a for more intuitive was to interact creatively like Music (ability to feel the location of music touch controls) and Art & Design (feel the edge of a line or art)... and many more uses that could surely come from these.
Also a Thunderbolt port that could connect to eternal drives, peripherals, input devices or be used as a second screen for a Mac (Awesome!).
