Artists would absolutely LOVE to have a 13" iPad.... the functionality of a Wacom Cintiq and computer built into a single device? We'd lap it up!

Just seems..... odd. I don't know a ton of people begging for a 13" tablet. It will be fairly heavy, and I just can't imagine business or creatives picking this thing up unless it adds additional functionality on the OS level (power user features).

Who wants a stylus? You have to get ‘em and put ‘em away and you lose ‘em -- yech! Nobody wants a stylus.

Onboard pen. Apple won't touch it, despite a lot of people wanting it.

People do want marking implements that are not part of their skeletal structure (fingers and toes). How many people do you see finger painting out there, versus using pens and pencils.

But you're right... styluses are not optimal. I have a NotePro 12.2. I use the onboard pen often, but I have lost the larger pen that I bought with an eraser. It's somewhere around here...

So why didn't apple release this last month? Seems like their iPad sales are falling flat and this may be the shot in the arm that is needed

is there any indication that a people are not buying because they want a considerably bigger one as there was with the iphones?

In the iPad forum, there are people clamoring for them, if that translates into consumers wanting one, is another thing.

Another reason might be that there are a number of people thinking that with an iPhone6+, they can get away without a tablet. If the new iPad Pro does deliver extra things not possible on the smaller screen, it might make people think they do still need an iPad... (Not me for the moment, at least).

Eventually, Samsung (or whoever) will produce exceptional devices that are convertible laptops/tablets. When they get really good, I suspect Apple will have to follow suit, so I think they will only get away with making us buy a laptop and a tablet for so long. I am sure they could quite easily make a MacBook Air that switches to an IOS tablet when you snap the screen back or similar, but they won't do it until they are forced to by the competition. That is why I like strong competition.

This is dumb beyond dumb ....
Tabs are fading out: not because they're unpopular, but because iPads are
so damn well-made, there's no compelling reason to buy a brand new one every year.

I bought an iPad 2 in 2011 and the ONLY reason I bought another new iPad Air
was 'cause the frackin' thing slipped outta my hands [blasted slippery aloomineeum ....],
plummeted to the sidewalk and spiderwebbed the entire screen. Not a happy moment.

So, again, other than "keeping up with the Jones"/early adopting,
the need for a brand spanking new iPad every year is nil at best.
And certainly not the need for a 12-inch plus new one, at that!

Sorry, but put this "iPad Pro" nonsense firmly in the FAIL column.

They don't need to sell a new one to everyone every year or two for the product to make sense.

Instead of an 12-inch iPad, I'd like to see one of those gizmos that Tim said
"isn't even rumored about": the things they're basing thier mammoth new HQ on.

I wonder while Apple continues to saturate the market with these widening array of products will the sales outweigh the R&D costs. Its a no brainer right now as sales are beyond [huuuuuge] but I wonder if this will get the meat and potatoes as other products.

I have and ipad 2, 6+ and just got my 13" rMBP. I'm not even sure where this would fit in as I was wondering if there is even a need to replace my iPad 2 that hasn't been used much at all since getting my macbook.

There simply must be a significant OS tweak in iOS for this type of tablet to become successful

Yeah, I agree and I +believe+ it’s the release of this device where we’ll see a notable divergence in the flavors of iOS on tablets (that we’ve already seen start with unique iOS features between the 6 and 6+). Splitscreen/panels/“windows” at the very least.

I also think this will be the @3x Retina device that was suggested by the code in the 8.1 beta. 12.2” @ 3072 x 2304 (which would be ~314PPI).

iPad Plus NOT iPad "pro"

This will simply be a larger screen iPad, more like iPhone 6 plus is to the iPhone 6...it will be something that would benefit medical, airline pilots, etc., it will be to push into enterprise market...NOT professional content creators like the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro computers.

This could also finally replace magazines.

Also, there is no iMac "Pro"

I don't know where this iPad "Pro" name idea came from, but it makes no sense, unless you think microsoft's surface is serious competition (it is not).

You contradict yourself. All the uses you give are professional in nature, even if you don't think content creators are among that group that would find a use for it (artists, video editors, architects, etc., who deal with graphics daily). Yet you reject the "Pro" suffix because "it makes no sense." Why? In truth, Pilots and Drs., which you list as potential users are professionals in the truest meaning of the word because they must pass a compentency test to obtain a license to work.

As you note Apple does use the "pro" product on two Mac products, "Mac Pro," and Macbook Pro." Why does Apple not having an "iMac Pro," somehow disqualify an iPad obtaining a "Pro" moniker?

Where there's smoke, there's fire....but I'm of the mindset that this (whatever this is) is a combination of the 12" retina laptop and a large tablet. I can't see Apple introducing two products the same size.

Maybe a tablet running OS X....

I agree. Dual user-interface (tablet and desktop) is a trend. Samsung will follow this route and Microsoft is already doing with Surface 2 (although it has some problems with weight and battery life).

I think Apple will adopt this approach when iPad market becomes saturated (based on sale reports). They are probably already experimenting ARM installations of OSX. Apple is just waiting a call from the "market forces" to launch the real MacPad.

I'd've bought it off ya if it was cosmetically & functionally perfect.
Just like my poor, lamented iPad 2 was .... *sniff*

Not perfect as the upper right part for the glass if chipped off. 100% of the viewable area is unblemished but non-the-less, not perfect. But I'm not completely ready to concede that I want to rid of it, it's just not getting much love. lol

We'll probably see a 17 inch iPad Pro before we see a 17 inch MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately! Although if Apple was to do that, adding a 3rd party keyboard via bluetooth might be something to try.

Ideally though they'll do a 17 inch retina MBP. (And a better Mac Mini update)....

This might be very interesting. The current iPad is still too small for reading magazines and do some serious works. Apple has to do something quickly as the iPad Airs have not been selling very well. The biggest decision is whether to make it Mac OS compatible or some kind of hybrid. If they do so, many people will jump on it. They should not worry about cannibalization with Macbook Air; just bring up the price on bar ($700+).

Unless development is way off, I don't get why they wouldn't of announced this at this year's iPad event with a 2015 release. Some consumers will be mad that they bought an Air 2 when a sudden "Pro" model comes out unless it isn't until Fall of 2015.
