No, I said I don’t find a compelling need for an upgrade other than (1) a major iOS update, and/or (2) “nice to haves.”

However, I’m flattered at your assumption that my opinion—which this is—is one of high authority.
I’m just trying to understand what makes you think this is not true when it’s been rumoured for months

Because it can be used as a document scanner. Ever deposit a check by taking a picture of it? Ever store a receipt by taking a picture of it? You can do that with larger documents and see them well on an ipad.
yeah with my phone I do

I think we get an iPad Pro with a faster CPU, Wi-Fi 6 and the triple camera. A faster CPU is always nice, but I'm not really CPU bound by anything I normally do. I am not someone who uses the camera so while it's nice to have it's irrelevant to me. Wi-Fi 6 is another nicety. If the update consists of just this I may hold off for a generation.

Oh who am I kidding, I'll get one and rationalize it by giving my current one to my wife.

It’s been more frequently rumored that there will be no such upgrades until fall 2020. I was explaining IMO why that would be more plausible. I simply don’t see any real reason to upgrade from the current Pro lineup, esoecially as long as iOS 14 is still in development.

You need to think laterally. Eg it can be useful at the supermarket, where you can show someone "Are these the veggies you want? How about those ones?" Same thing when buying clothes, furniture, so many things when someone else's opinion might matter.

Great point. I have also used it with my in-laws when they are having a problem doing something with their TV or another appliance.

instead of “what do you see in the lower right corner”, etc., they just show me on FaceTime.

my 1st gen. iPad Pro still works fine with daily work, I think it will serve me for another 2 years (at least).
BTW. Can I expect the iPad Pro with flat rear camera someday?:p

This is excellent news. I will upgrade my 10.5 and wife’s 12.9 if these get 6GB of RAM in all storage tiers and a processor update. Otherwise, I’m ordering refurb 1TB models to get the 6GB of RAM. They’re priced at $1319 for WiFi only models right now. With the ever increasing multi-tasking iPads do, 4GB isn’t enough to last my wife and I for the next 3 years or so.

So I shouldn't buy an iPad pro tomorrow???
It's not like I care for the camera or the augmented reality nonsense.

The release is literally weeks away. They are typically priced the same, so hold on. It is better to have the new model given how obsolete tech becomes these days so quickly. If it was an update, I would not buy this generation, but if you are in the market for a new one just hold on and get the new model.

If new ones come out, the retail outlets will generally deeply discount the old models. Plus, Apple usually puts the old models on the refurb store at a significant discount.

IOW, it pays to wait a few weeks even if you end up buying the 2018 model.

Personally, I'm hoping to get one with a new backlit keyboard. That would be perfect.

Yeah, it'd be great if you guys referred to the quarter or a particular month, rather than the season.
Except that no date has been announced yet of course.

Triple lens camera you say?

Let me think back to when I last used my iPad for taking pictures...........oh yeah, never.

They are going to need to pull their finger out if they want decent sales over the next few years on the iPad. My wife and I have the Ipad Pro 10.5, bought in later 2017 and have no desire to upgrade anytime soon. I realise some people have higher demands of the iPad but I see nothing in the last few years that would make you need to upgrade.

If Apple think everyone is going to upgrade yearly for an extra camera lens, they are living in a dreamworld.

Well, according to rumors, two extra lenses + laser-based depth sensor, A12X—>A13X, 4GB—>6GB RAM, mini-LED backlighting*, possible 128GB base storage, 5G cellular*.

But I take your point. I myself have a 1st gen 12.9” and might well be waiting for a fall 2021 5th gen lol. It’s similar to iPhones; the upgrade cycle, which was already probably at least three years, is lengthening.

Apple of course saw it coming, and that’s exactly why they went to the larger screen, FaceID and added $150-200 to the base price. Selling fewer units at a higher ASP—exactly like the move to the iPhone X platform in 2017.

*Rumored for fall 2020 afaik

I don’t find any appeal in “upgrading” my iPad Pro to a three-camera system. I’ll wait for the announcement, hopefully there is more than that.

My wishlist:
  • XCode with the full functionality.
  • Backlit keyboard with trackpad.
  • MatLab, Spyder and full version of Excel.
  • BootCamp or some form of virtualization software to allow running real professional software (Mac and Windows).
  • The ability for apps to be reshaped and placed anywhere on the screen instead of the split screen options we currently have.
  • An additional USB-C port or headphone jack (yes, I want it back).
I realize this is mostly software related and even third-party developers thing.
See you... never :(

They don’t expect people to upgrade every year...

The iPad Pro mini is called the iPhone. You won’t get an iPad Pro mini, ever. This prediction is more reliable than DigiTimes.

How do you make that list of your devices under your posts?

As to video chat, I have never understood why a person would want to be watched while talking. Text is the best way to communicate most of the time.
Video conveys nuance in body language and expression that audio lacks, just as audio conveys nuance in tone and pacing that text lacks. Conversely, video requires more bandwidth than audio, which requires more bandwidth than text. The former two also generally work better as realtime methods (text can easily be near-realtime like SMS, or asynchronous, like email). It's not a matter of any one mode being superior to the others, there is a right time and use for each mode of communication.

I would consider upgrading to a 5G iPad. But that seems like the feature Apple will hold back for the next refresh.

It'd be great if Apple announced the events more than a week or two before they happen. Until then, MacRumors is doing what they can. I'd rather they report the information they have as such (and label speculation as such), instead of speaking in more specific sounding terms when they don't actually know. And if there's a speculated event that falls on/near the boundary between two quarters, naming the season is less misleading, until we know an actual date.

Hold back? How conspiratorial lol.

How about it’s not ready yet. Qualcomm’s president is on the record saying iPhone’s September release is a tough schedule.

I kind of want to upgrade my 10.5 iPad Pro, but I only use mine for media consumption.

My son and the Xbox have monopolizing the main TV too much lately and I'm stuck on the iPad (my choice as I refuse to put TV before family, we have DVR).
