Actually it isn't, but it's getting close. The problem with OLED is brightness, or rather a lack of it. That is why Apple went mini-LED. If you look at the tablets or laptops that use OLED now with retina quality, they tend to top out at 400 nits, way too dim for Apple's requirements.

The problem with OLEDs that would meet Apple's brightness and pixel density requirements have a tendency to wrinkle. They are looking to Samsung and LG to perfect a different OLED technology that doesn't have that drawback. Until that happens, Apple's sticking with mini-LED. Note Samsung's own OLED tablets are very dim.
Why don't they use QD-OLED? Is it not polished enough for tablets yet?

That’s the one I will probably get. No need to update my M1 version to M2. Even 2018 and 2020 models should still be good.

That's obvious. You should only upgrade once every super cycle. Like if you still have iPad Pro 10.5 like me, you should buy the M2 iPP 12.9. I will give my iPad Pro 10.5 to my mom, she's still using my iPad Air 2...

In a tweet, Young said both models of the iPad Pro will come with OLED displays in the early half of 2024. The new M2 iPad Pro models announced yesterday include no display changes, including the lack of a mini-LED display on the smaller 11-inch model. Apple introduced a mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in April 2021, and despite rumors it would also come to the 11-inch size, that did not happen.

Compared to mini-LED technology, the OLED displays Apple is reportedly planning to use will include a two-stack tandem structure, in which there are two red, green, and blue emission layers, allowing for increased brightness. OLED displays are also more power efficient, which could help extend battery life.
Wouldn't a 11" or 12.9" OLED display be far less brighter because the emitters are so small they can't get that bright compared to larger OLED displays?

2024??!. That’s what happens when there is no true competition. Innovation is stuck and prices keep high.

This is when I plan to finally upgrade my 2018 11” iPad Pro. It still does everything I need. Hopefully by 2024 Apple will also release an iPad Pro version of Final Cut! 😉

My god, how do I become an Apple analyst/rumour spreader?

- Guys! I’ve just heard that Apple will update the iMac in 2023 or 2024.

- Also, I’ve seen schematics of the Mac Pro, *checks notes*, it will be the fastest and most powerful yet.

- Apple has been putting a team together to work on VR/AR glasses. They will be released at some point in the future and Apple will employ a sales technique where it asks you for money and in return gives you one product.

It’s easy also just throw in missed features that didn’t make the cut for the current line announced lined up and you’ll have sponsors willingly to sign you up from the get go.

Hover would be a good feature to have, but I'll wait for this new display before upgrading my 2019 12.9 Pro.

I have the 10.5 and really wanted to get a new one, mostly because I want a 12.9 screen. However I am now SERIOUSLY thinking to wait for 2024 OLED as it is likely to be vastly better for the screen and other things too (wireless charging, Apple Pencil 3???).
But it’s such a long wait….

This M2 model must be the last model till this one if this is correct. A new update every year and a half. It would make sense why Apple didn’t invest more in mini-LED (reduce blooming, bring it to 11” model) this year if theyre just going to replace it for the next model.

Sounds about right. Apple will be the 1st one to do it exceedingly well.
They'd better do. Their customers suffered for 10 years with LCD displays. And now they will obviously use the displays from Samsung (so, exceedingly good or not, they will not be better than the ones on Samsung tablets)

It's not ideal to wait and skip an entire super cycle, it's too long.

Having an older redundent device is okay because you can always pass them onto someone like your mon or grandma, etc. They won't be able to tell the difference.

IMHO If your 10.5 no longer fitting your needs, buy a used model from last year to get the best bang for your buck. I replaced my 10.5 with a gen 4 iPad Air, which will carry me over to when OLED iPads are for sale… 👍🏻

Thanks for the suggestion, I’d never considered anything outside the pro range as being an upgrade, but perhaps I have blinded myself. I suspect I will still just wait though, never be able to convince my partner that I should buy one then another in a year and a half.

Not really sure what a “super cycle” is, but I imagine it’s the main change every other device (like with iPhone XS being minor over iPhone X then next one is more major). If that’s the case then this m2 iPad is the minor upgrade suggesting it is more wise to wait… or have I completely misunderstood?

I’ve only just gone mental for my 40th and splashed out on a watch ultra, iPhone 14 pro max (iPhone X before) and ebayed a used m1 13” MacBook Pro… not bought Apple things for around 4-5 years so waiting for the iPad to spread the joy out longer might be wise too as I probably will have to wait another 5 years at least to buy next new phone or watch etc.

2024 should be a sweet time for new iPads!

is not for the ipad pro
Ross Young will be again wrong with what device this panel will go into, like he did with the 27" iMac being in fact the panel for the Studio Display
iPads Pro will go micro-led after mini-led
How was he wrong? he stated it was going to happen but was pushed back.

When it comes to displays he is hardly ever wrong

Not sure why that is taking forever! Is not that OLED display tech is not matured enough or something.
Because they are waiting for LTPO tech and to get it to the level where brightness is good enough. currently OLED screens for tablets have some short comings in this area
