Everyone needs a phone. So android can dominate in terms of sales because no one company can supply everybody in the whole world with a smart phone.

However no one needs an iPad. And that’s where Apple have to be congratulated. They are managing to sell a device to people who don’t actually need it. And that’s what perplexes so many Apple detractors!

Yes you can do a lot of the things you can do on an iPad with a number of other devices so you would think that no one would buy an iPad if that was the case.

What seems to be happening is that that is exactly what happened with the android tablet market where there was no inbuilt demand for it like there was for android phones. Without that inbuilt market and no decent software / hardware eco system to “sell” android tablets it just died.

The iPads success has come from Apple concentrating on software and user experience beyond the basic “watch movies and surf the net” use cases that iPad detractors seem to think is the only thing they are used for.

I feel that in a lot of ways the iPad story is a bigger achievement than the iPhone. Because Apple is actually “selling” the concept of the iPad to people who have alternatives and do t actually need it. That’s pretty hard to do.

And this has been at the expense of low end laptop suppliers. If you remember way back
When Apple explained the iPad it was there answer to netbooks which were then undercutting normal laptops. The cry was that Apple should make a netbook. But they said they couldn’t make a good computer for that price. Many people criticised them. But they made the iPad instead.

I think it’s safe to say Apple were right!

You’re correct, no one needs an iPad, but there are those people who need a computer whereby the “computer” operating system is capable of more functionality than iOS. My thinking is I wanted a consumption device with little to no maintenance and great battery life and a tablet factor. That leaves out all forms of windows 10 hardware and any Apple macOS hardware. Android tablets were not as robust as the competition. (IMO). So that leaves iPad.

Not trying to be harsh(I wish I had a Macbook pro), but it sounds funny that you can't justify the price of an iPad($329) but own a Macbook pro which likely costs at least 5 times that
It does sound funny. But a Macbook Pro is something I generate income with by producing videos, livestreams, writing & laying out books.
Already owning the laptop, I can't personally justify the multi-hundred dollar expense of a tablet, which for me, would be a consumption device.
But I absolutely love iPads. Think they're great whenever I get to use one. =)

For what is worth, Samsung's Tab S3 is a pretty good tablet and the bundled S Pen a delight to use. There's an undeniable app gap though, and we all know Samsung does not support their products well... still, considering I don't have the need for many specialised apps and I got a deal for the Tab S3 making it about less than half the price of an iPad Pro, I went for the S3 and though I'd wish the display was 10.5" rather than 9.7" I'm quite happy with it. Yeah, the iPad Pro IS better but this does everything I want it to do and it's much better value for the price.

That said, that's me and I can totally understand how the market at large very much prefers the iPad. Google completely abandoned the category years ago, so no surprises there.

As an Android phone user with an iPad Pro - you don't want an Android tablet.
True, but I don't want an Apple tablet either.

Can I ask tablet users without children: what do you consistently use your tablet for?

I was genuinely surprised that apple shipped so many. I had the (perhaps mistaken) impression that the tablet market was dead. Many friends have iPads for the kids (games and media consumption) but that's about it.

Meh, I have a Macbook Pro and can't justify an iPad. They don't "do" anything to any level that I require. Consume media (can do that on anything with a screen) and play crappy phone games. People obviously use them, but for what I do they are not powerful enough. More power to people that use them, but iPads and actual computers with pro apps are different horses for different courses.

Not surprised iPad are the number one choice for a tablet.

As much as like android phones, their tablets are always so disappointing. Apps from the google play store are rarely optimized for it. They either look too large and blurry other they look too small.

The hardware is great on Android tablets, but the software is unbearable.

I was tempted a few months ago to get the tab s3. But the software was what held me back. I evidently decided on the iPad pro 10.

I wish there was more app optimization for Android tablet, because they do make some nice tablets.

I use it to replace my laptop, I have a desktop computer that I’m going to use when there’s anything heavy to do so $329 is perfect for something to just surf and email with when I’m away.
