Too many absolute statements going on here. Just because something doesn't work for you (or vice versa for that matter) doesn't mean the same is true for others. For many the iPad is excellent for what they need and want it to do, for others it just isn't enough or is just irrelevant, and it's all cool. Stating one side or the other as an absolute is pure bull. It is what is to you, but don't spit on others who found different results.

And to the guy talking about the ability to edit Word documents. I'm a writer who exclusively uses and loves MS Word. The number 1 thing I had to be able to do on any device I bought is edit my stories and novels on it, and with Pages I'm doing that just fine.

spot on.

Making simple edits to documents and powerpoint files is not complicated and not unreasonable to ask.

Also a simple filesystem is not unreasonable to ask.

You fanboys are so simple minded. As soon as you get proper MS office compatibility and a simple file system, you will shout from the roof tops how great apple and SJ are. Now because they don't have it, you say it's not a big deal and no one wants it anyways.

In case you've never used a computer, a desktop OS can do a LOT more than just make simple edits to word documents and save files from the web.

I love everyone in this thread calling me a troll, when what i've said is 100% true, and everyone will be agreeing with me in a matter of time, but because you are all such rabid fans and so short cited, you are just apologizing for apple and defending them in order to defend your own purchases.

Yes, people are browsing the web with their fingers when they used to use a mouse (and not being able to see any flash content), and they are playing angry birds and world of goo with their fingers. Big deal, give me some substance.

The iPad is very useful to me. Have had it since launch day. Figured out how it's system works and what apps do what I needed in order to make it useful. Are there some features I would like to see? Sure, and some of those are ones you mentioned. But just because it doesn't have those particular feature doesnt mean it isn't useful to me.

May make it that way for you, and feel free to state that for you, but to call the rest of us derogatory names ( fanboy in this case is your choice) because some disagree with you and find it does what they need, doesn't help your argument. And is why you illicit the response/derogatory comments from others that are no better.

The device is revolutionary, you can choose to disagree, but I think the fact that you had one for a month and got rid of it, but still hang out in this forum speaks different. I think you still want one. Too bad it doesn't do what you need it to do to make it worth your while. Hopefully something will come out that does, or iOS5 makes enough changes for you. But if not, please don't blame us for our like of the device as it works today.

Revolutionary marketing, mediocre computing device.

Hopefully iOS changes that, but i'm betting we'll have to wait until iOS6 and iPad 3 before we see this thing really transform into something more useful than a pretty angry birds playing machine. I'm mostly talking about iOS and how outdated and limited it currently is. Also as iPad apps mature and get better (I can't load powerpoint and word files on pages/keynote/documents to go without loosing TONS of formatting/pictures/charts, etc...) it will be better.

All iPad/iPAd 2 owners are early adopters and beta testers, because as many people and even Steve Jobs have pointed out, this will be a slow 'revolution' away from traditional computing, and it will take years to evolve to a place where it is actually a useful alternative to traditional computing (it's just a toy now).
Need to try a bit harder with the trolling, in that last paragraph, son.

Revolutionary doesn't necessarily mean the best or most exciting, but look what the iPad has done. It's made tablet computing relevant to the average consumer. It's created a market that nearly every other manufacturer is desperate to get into, and created a product line which millions of consumers are scrambling to get their hands on. One hundred years from now, the iPad may not go down in history as the best tablet pc ever (just like the Model T certainly isn't the best automobile ever), but it will be the product that started it all. If that's not revolutionary, I don't know what is?

I agree with your first statement, but disagree most of the rest. Prior to the Model T (which yes, I agree, extremely revolutionary), there was no such type of transportation available other than horses, with obvious limitations.

Prior to the iPad, you have MBP's, PC's, HTPC's, MBA's, etc... It's not like we were suffering. It's not like a change was completely necessary since all of the devices aforementioned do everything better than the iPad, or AT LEAST as good.

Yes, it is a whole different experience using the iPad (obvious), and yes, I owned and liked my original iPad. I just didn't use it very much because it didn't further my production levels. I actually felt like I was going backward instead of forward.

It is definitely more portable...but does this equate into revolutionary?

Let me nail on the head why this is revolutionary: it's simple to use.

Morons in the computer industry don't understand everyone else. They have a GIANT audience/consumer base (almost everyone in the world) and they have always tried to design computers and software they can use, and f' the rest of the world. That's retarded.

Apple has designed computers cheaper and simpler until they are easily accessible to neophytes. That's the biggest revolution ever. What use is designing a car no one can drive? Or only 2% wants to drive while only 5% are able to drive?

This product is a computer most people seem to want, and everyone can use (outside of amputees).

Wow... That 'son' comment just hit the nail on the head. What a trolly thing to say... Have a look in the mirror, son!

The guy was being a bit of an ass so he treated the guy accordingly. Nothing wrong with that in my book since the point could have been made without the condescending remarks about us "fanboys".

I see the sense in what you're saying, but I disagree. We had landline phones and pagers before the cellphone too, but does that make cellphones any less revolutionary? A landline never drops calls and pagers were smaller than cellphones, particularly those early generation brick-like models. And yet they have markedly changed society.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

OP has a valid point. Since I bought my pre-owned iPad1 last week, I have not used my Mac netbook hackintosh at all. This simply does everything I need it to.

Well I took several word documents I was working on (saved them in compatibility format, 2003 style) and using pages and documents to go the formatting was messed, pictures were missing, tables were mess, etc... Totally unusable. Exact same thing with keynote and documents to go.

I don't want to create new documents on the iPad because that would be very cumbersome, I will use my MBP for that. What would be really great would be to do the bulk of my work on the MBP, and then grab the iPad to proof read/make small changes. This at the moment does not work. I guess if you are just typing a short story for fun and all you have is text with simple formatting you might be golden, but if you actually have a complex document with formatting, headers/footers, images, charts, graphs, tables, etc... it simple cannot be done at this point. Hopefully future version of software on the iPad allow it, but right now it doesn't.

Yea, the iPad is revolutionary - a revolutionary money machine for Apple's app store :D. For me not so much, there is still too much I can't do with it. I see it as more evolutionary although in someways it is a step backwards.

Welcome to my ignore list. Man, it's getting crowded in there. :D

The iPad1 was something new and useful that's getting a new industry going. The iPad2 is an update.

As far as "revolutionary" I'd say no. Facebook is what I would consider to be a revolutionary force. It's actually helped real revolutions happen recently.

Well, just as aside, I have written and published 7 books through my own press and have published many stories and poems elsewhere, so I've done it for a bit more than "just fun". :)

But I see your point, however, that's not really an iPad failing as much as a Microsoft failing by not putting Word on iPad. I've tried Word alternatives on my PC and they all suck for my needs, and I also work with other authors and sometimes have had to use Apple-created Word files on my PC. Not really the greatest transition either, even when they were created in the Mac version of Word.

One word: Flipboard. It is easily the most unique browsing experience. It actually fundamentally changes how I look at the web, and I love it.
I agree. Flipboard + iPad is where the real revolution for me because sifting through the junk in the news/twitter/Facebook is so easy and actually fun. I've got my dad hooked on the iPad for this...(well, Flipboard and the dozens of games he buys but will never play. He's an app addict but all he uses is Flipboard and Music)
