while true but how often do you see numbers that far out of wake compared to competitors. Same area I would expect them to be with in reason of eachother. Yes some better than others.

Anything numbers of similar products or area are out of line with others in the same area it should raise huge red flags that something is up.

Yeah, it's called Apple's stock.

There's 2 explanations, and you are ignoring one of them. It could be a statistical outlier or it *just could be* that Apple has a great product that satisfies users at an amazingly high rate. You want to get all statistical and scientific, while ignoring one of the 2 possibilities and also overtly injecting your own obvious biases. Too funny.

Agreed to a point.

Your ARE correct that this is just TOO early to tell. This research is HORRIBLY flawed.

1. First graph shows RIM/BlackBerry - when their tablet is ONLY available in limited release for TESTING to 2 company's only - Sun Life Financial (Canada) and Globe & Mail. This has been public for early research.

2. The source, linked, clearly states "A November ChangeWave survey of 1,641 business IT buyers has taken a close-up look at 1st Quarter corporate tablet demand." This MAY BE good for 2-5AM Informationals to convince those braindead but for this site ... I'd assume better quality research was posted on main page.

RIM already has a new market segment eyeing the PlayBook - Medical Research & Development. Regardless of the rumors of the iPad 2 having 1/2 camera's ... if it doesn't ship by April Apple will have some SERIOUS competition of mindshare.

3. Dell Streak is STILL a phone, a BIG one but its targeted for smartphone users that need slightly larger than 4" screen yet still front pants pocket portable.
> This should NOT be in the research, nor should HP's 500 tablet (if that is the new Win7 model that was to debut before mid-summer 2010) that thing wouldn't entice a hamster on its own treadmill.

This one seems to be somewhat less of a hogwash than the Asymco one that was posted on Front page that stated something to the tune of "we pulled the data from thin air, BUT if this data is in fact correct THEN iPhone has won the world over and Verizon with the Android phones is in dire straits. P.S. Take this with a grain of salt."

iPad is a new category which took on the dead and freed up Tablet name. While there are were no credible competitors up until the Galaxy Tab came along and PlayBook and Moto Tab were just "announced" - surveying users for Tablet preferences is so pointless that it is ridiculous. Once people see the options available - and both PlayBook and Moto Tab look pretty good - then we will see how the iPad holds up. Not saying it will fail - Apple might leapfrog others with iPad2 leaving them to play catchup - but that is all speculation at this point.

Some one should take a hard look at these so called analysts if they are into something sinister - I would not be surprised if they found something awful.

These charts reflect my own feeling on satisfaction when using Apple and other products.

Of course. The clueless will find out there is no tablet market (Tablet exist before iPad, but they are awful, and they still are). However, there is market for iPad.

Exactly.

Almost.

There is a tablet market, but not for the sort of tablets on the market.
The iPad is the market in the main.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

It's all about apps. I can do some pretty amazing things with my iPhone 4. Now imagine all that and more on an iPad, in even more easy, slick and enjoyable fashion. The ecosystem alone sells the device.

I'm curious as to what exactly these folks are doing with their iPads.

Mine is primarily for personal use: to check my personal email while I'm at work, for example, since Gmail is blocked from the corporate network.
I feel bad for working wherever you do. They block Gmail? Really?
Mine is used for corp and play. I wish I could do Live Meeting on it, but in meetings it's all I need (besides the LM).

I'm sleep deprived, and have a headache, but one of the charts adds up to more than 100%.

Also, I wouldn't be celebrating about this. If you think about it, the HP slate came out I think November 11, in very, very limited quantities. If I'm not mistaken like 9,000 were available. Or maybe even 2,000. I don't know. So if they have 8% of the corporate market, then it sounds like Apple hasn't sold that many iPads.

We're about to. We handle sensitve customer data and they are asking us to cut off all access to webmail providers. I recently installed OCS which is Microsoft's internal IM and conferencing product so we can kill all external IM providers.

Note that the two options are "very satisfied" and "somewhat satisfied". "Unsatisfied" results aren't shown.

It's easy to glance at the graph and think it's a "satisfied/unsatisfied" option, so just want to make that distinction clear.

If people just read the captions thy easily see what it is. We assume that Unsatisfied was among the options in the original questions, they just are not displayed. It is not too hard to do the math.

Thats just sad, just............... sad. Theres no competition so I guess the iPad probably wont be changing that much hence

Please explain your theory on how this is "statical to low of a number". Also, could you tell me where you went to college?

That's the same question that tripped through my head too...along with the thought, "How does one make spelling errors on a board with a built-in spell checker?" :)

I'm not represented in the data shown! :( I'm probably closer to the "Neither Satisfied Nor Dissatisfied" category, should it exist. So far I've found my iPad to trump a laptop only in portability and ease of reading PDFs. Browsing the web on it isn't really my cup of tea. Looking to get a laptop again soon.

Also, I thought the categories added up to 100% for some reason, and I thought "What a horrible way to present the data; makes Apple look good without really showing the whole story." But it does look like businesses really like the iPad... for whatever reason. I would've thought corporate users to hate the thing. Then again maybe they just like getting free toys, since they're probably given a laptop as well anyways.

Great, but I've said it before I'm sick of all this ipad and iphone news.. The only thing I'm excited about is OSX Lion and a redesigned iMac..

Archos

I have an ipad and I love it but I wanted something in the middle and got the Archos 70 and you know what? I really like it. It isn't quite as fluid as the ipad but the screen is bright and clear and it has all the apps I use on the ipad. It's fast but is limited on ram though apps run very well. I bought a 16 gb card for it. It has HDMI and flash. It's extremely lightweight and costs only $270. It's actually getting good reviews at Amazon but it's hard to find. Everytime Newegg, Archos, and Amazon gets it in, they sell out almost immediately. If I had to compare, I still like the ipad better but this is a great size and has some features the ipad doesn't. I find myself using my ipad more as a laptop around my house but I take the Archos when I'm out and about because if it's size and how light it is. It actually fits in my cargo pockets. Anyway, just another option.

When I saw Michelle TaFoya on MNF with one in her lap interviewing Roger Goodell I knew the iPad was SUPER official.

Not having a big laptop in my lap while watching tv is a killer feature alone!!!

I like my iPad but I'm not so much of a fanboy like 99% of the people here that I won't admit that it has some major shortcomings. It is not a serious device, but a toy. Mere content consumption but it doesn't do the best job of it. No flash? Means 70% of the web will not work as intended. No file browser? Means everything is done through that craphole Safari and nothing can be stored for offline use. Want to download videos or music from the internet (from something other than iTunes) and have it show up in your Videos or Music app? Tough luck. Want to take files off of it when you connect it to your computer? Tough luck. Want to watch some music videos from YouTube on it? As it is deemed a mobile device by YouTube, most of the music videos on there won't load. Want to email a video or upload something on YouTube? Too bad, because again, there's no file browser. Let's do something simple, then. Let's order some pizza. Too bad, Pizza Hut uses flash. Okay, fine, let's watch some funny videos from Newgrounds. Too bad, it uses flash. Fine, let's watch latest episodes of my favorite TV shows online. Too bad, all such sites use flash. But it's okay because it's "dying" even though more and more devices are starting to support Flash and thus more and more developers are pouring in. All this because some asswipe in Cupertino has a childish grudge.

There's such a huge market for a tablet running much more capable software (like W7) that it's not even funny anymore. We just have to wait for the proper hardware. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with at CES.

Yeah, the first chart asks business buyers which brand they would consider in Q1 2011. Although the question asks for a single response, I'm sure some are going to consider more than one brand.

Again, despite HP Slate sales with only 9,000 available (maybe they even sold them all), the poll is for "considering to buy", and then only for 1400+ IT business buyers. A choice for considering to buy 10 iPads counts as much as a choice for considering to buy 8000 Dells.

It's just a simple survey, as was the customer satisfaction findings. If you try to take this and turn it into a global or US "units sold", or even a global or US "considering to buy" then that's just being naive. Even more so when you then whine that the figures just don't add up.

I think someone else was complaining that the 3% of iPad users not covered in the satisafaction survey and we are assuming that are unsatisfied was too low a figure and within the margin of error.
What ? Did they even go to college ?
I didn't read that the survey was trying to project their findings onto any larger scale, like say, all iPad owners - which is when you would introduce margins of error. Their sample size would be way too small to produce meaningful results, or rather their margin of error would be up at something obscene like 15%.
But I'm starting to wander, being unsatidfied with the product was not the question they were asked.

The numbers in the first graph sum 108%
If a surveyed company planned to buy from more than one tablet vendor then they'd vote for more than one, making the total over 100%. It would be surprising, in fact, if every company used only one vendor.

...SNIP...

Dude, I agree! The Earth IS flat!

Can we please put the "it's a toy" claim to rest? You're wrong. It's been proven again and again that real people are using this for real work. If it doesn't support the work you want to do on it. DON'T BUY IT. I'm not sure why it's that tough to understand. Seriously.

You made up the 70% number. I'm not even going to beat around the bush, you're either misinformed or a liar. I'm guessing both.

Flash is dying. I worked for one of the largest digital agencies in the world, and we saw first-hand what the iOS products were doing to our flash work.

Here's the deal kids: Apple is big enough that they're going to shape what the web does. If the iOS stuff continues to not support flash, then flash will die. You're welcome to pretend that's not the case, but that's what it is. For the same reason most companies STILL support IE6 on sites. And that's a declining market. The iOS market is just starting. Content providers will NOT allow that market to avoid seeing their content. Anywhere possible, Flash will be replaced by more future-facing technologies. Ads, videos, animations. Goodbye flash. Yes, Flash will still have a purpose for some things (camera interaction, rich multimedia applications, etc.), but it's going to be VERY limited.

The numbers in the first graph sum 108%

Terrible credibility...

Because there's no way companies could be choosing to buy, oh, I don't know, products from more than one company. Nope. That couldn't happen...

Great, but I've said it before I'm sick of all this ipad and iphone news.. The only thing I'm excited about is OSX Lion and a redesigned iMac..

Is it really that hard to just not read it? Are you that upset with your life?

And I will tell you right now Apple 3% does not add up and that also tells me that the numbers have other faults in them.

3% is statical to low of a number. That or just proof that Apple has a lot of fan boys that will cover the truth up and say it is better than it really is.

that 3% is with in the margin of error of being at 0%. You never get results like that on anything. It very easy to spot outliers in results and Apple is pretty far outside the normal outliers which tells me that the something is wrong with the test, question or the results. 3% should raise some huge flags when it is that far from other products.
If you can not understand that then you should tell us were you went to college because clear we should not want to go there.

Your failure to grasp even basic statistics is absolutely shocking.

I don't see how iPad's could really be that useful as a full-fledged computing device. I did see an interesting presentation in a Starbucks once. I thought that was a great use of an iPad. But when I'm sitting at work or home doing my daily work, the last thing I want to use is an iPad.

And it's still a gimped waste of money.

See first reply. You're wrong. When the iPad came out, a lot of people made these predictions. They've been proven wrong. Move on.

these are November survey results. Didn't the HP tablet just come out in late Oct?

The first chart is an "intent to buy" chart.

PS3 is used by the air force and various institutions for HPC. That's a lot more "work" than ipad could ever do, but its still just a game console, and no one is claiming otherwise.

If you have to figure out a way to use an ipad for work, that tells you right there its not meant for work, and just a toy.

Nothing short of propaganda and nonsense :)

Not to say that real iPad competitors are not out as yet...

Who on earth can still take such news seriously!?!?

It will take time, but the competitors will soon be outselling the iPad. Low price, customisation and the lack of desire to 'jailbreak' will drive this.

Not saying the iPad will die. I have the feeling the iPad will actually be adopted by Schools and Businesses before any other tablet. But non-techy consumers will nearly always go for the cheaper option. Especially if the cheaper option can do more than Apple's expensive option. And for the techy guys, the closed ecosystem will be enough to drive away their custom.

Yes, it's time to enjoy the laughs and the lead now.

It's far too early in the game to claim a long term win.

Apple is their own worst enemy. Refusing to build a very popular 7" size was a huge mistake. One they may back pedal on yet.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's time to replay the well worn out song... "but look at the bazillions we are selling now"

Yeah... go ahead... gloat.

We will see what happens when the competitors are fully ramped up and available.

If Microsoft decides to get serious and offer a windows tablet it will be a very interesting move.

Far too many people have no clue how deep Microsoft is as a company. They only see it from a consumer side.

Time will tell.... :)

Next to impossible with current management. Besides, MS' problems aren't just temporary or cosmetic, they run very deep. It's a culture issue. It's about attitude. The very act of licensing your product out to all takers betrays a fundamental disrespect for that product, and that core attitude about how the consumer should experience and interact with your whored-out-to-anyone-that-can-slam-together-a-box product will be communicated to consumers each time.

MS doesn't understand User Experience. Fundamentally sound User Experience begins with implementing a clear, uniform vision that *all* of your products must conform to. That is fundamental to building a vibrant, exciting ecosystem. And that all begins with one thing: restricted licensing.

It will take time, but the competitors will soon be outselling the iPad. Low price, customisation and the lack of desire to 'jailbreak' will drive this.

Anyone can flood the market with cheap, fragmented junk. Just ask Eric T. Mole and the netbook assemblers.

No surprise here. Apple's research is shining through, all the others are just "me too" trying to just get something out there to take advantage of the wave Apple has created. It is great to see that finally, without true passion behind the design of a product you will fail.

Once Microsoft releases their version, the iPad will become a footnote in technological history...like the cube.

Ballmer is bringing the "MsPad" out........um.......well.......real soon.

That IS a joke, right? If not, which operating system will it have? Windows 7 with its bloatware effect and lack of touch compatibility? or that 'hugely successful' mobile OS?

You do realise that the OS is the key to tablet success? iOS was designed for iPad initially. Market forces persuaded Apple to release the iPhone first. So what we have is a mobile phone with a tablet OS.

Microsoft have been locked into the idea that the 'Slate' has to be a fully functioning PC, when all the evidence is that it does not.

So now Ms are in the curious situation where they have an embarrassment of operating systems [in more ways than one], ie: two, but neither was designed for a tablet or slate.

As Grady Seasons said [to Tom Cruise's Vincent] It's like a nightmare, isn't it? It just keeps getting worse and worse.
