I'm not a lawyer but I worked in it for a while and this should be easy for you
You have to prove it was there in the beginning, a manufacturing defect. The genius did that for you already. Cables don't come lose after 13 months. The Genius might then try to argue that it is wear and tear. You said that there is no visible damage and the iPad is in pristine condition. You should be ok here. As far as I know, the fault can also be insufficient build quality. Under reasonable use it has to last you 24 months. Have fun finding a lawyer's definition for reasonable use though. Point is: looks alright ~ was treated alright.
If all fails, I pulled this with Dell some time back. My girlfirend's laptop had died just out of warranty and Dell was reluctant. I told them I was 25 (true at the time) and that our household was probably going to buy around 50 to 60 computers over our live time. They now had the chance to make the at least the next one a Dell. They sent a technician the next day (no mail in repair, the guy came right over and did it here).
This of course wouldn't work after 5 years of use, but my arguemt, and I have done this now several times is: I'm still young, if I like your product, I will stay with your company, if I don't I'll take my business somewhere else.
