It's true. Once you have purchased an apple device, you absolutely will not stop ever, until you have collected them all...

I want an iMac, but the price doesn't justify it. I'd rather have a desktop custom built by myself, and a nice 30" IPS Dell screen. Better performance and parts in every way (except space management and arguably style), for a slightly better price as well. The unfortunate downside is I wouldn't get to use the multitouch trackpad, I wouldn't get OS X Lion, and I wouldn't have a sleek aluminum design to the whole package. But that's just aesthetics, and I can set up the aesthetics in my room just fine.

I also want an iPhone, but I realized I wouldn't use it for anything other than phoning and texting. Quite literally I don't do anything else on the go. So again, no iPhone for me.

An iPad is cool enough, it's on my future buying list for sure. And Apple laptops are always good by me: I bought an 11-inch 2011 Air and love it :D

But yeh... for a conscious consumer, I prefer mobile Apple stuff. Not so much the stationary stuff for what I do, though.

As far as iPad vs. Air goes... they're just two different products. I want to get myself an iPad despite having an 11-inch Air. They serve different enough purposes to warrant having both. :)

Same here. I am still using a nokia 5800 exactly because I use my phone only for calls, texting and the occasional photo. I traded in my phone free (so no expensive down payment) and am saving $30+ a month in phone bills. :D

As for the ipad, I have been eyeing one for quite some time now, but haven't yet been able to justify purchasing one because I am not sure what the heck I would use it for anyways.

It's just that after I got my Imac, I have this irrational (but still controllable) urge to want to "complete the set" with an iphone and imac complementing my imac on the desk. :p

Am I the only one?

I got an Air, and I have an urge to buy an iMac lol. But I have this awesome desktop I assembled with insanely nice parts (all brand new). But I sit down and think about it logically and realize there's no reason to switch. I do wish I spent more on my screen (I spent $340 on a 27-inch TN panel and wish I spent more on a $450 VA panel or even more on an IPS panel instead). I also wish I got a more Apple-esque case (I ended up getting an NZXT Phantom black case -- looks cool but it's more a conservative PC-gamer look... should've spent more on an aluminum brushed case :p).

But ya... I like the whole idea of the wireless syncing. That's the only reason I'm attracted to the iPhone: wirelessly syncing all my apps and data and such. But then I realize what would I be syncing? :p My text documents and music are about it. Maybe some videos. And honestly I don't need to use a planner (wirelessly using iStudiez or ToDo or any other sort of calendar-related program wouldn't do it for me... it's the idea that attracts me... but I've never forgotten about due dates or anything of the like ever, so looking at my phone for that sort of thing isn't needed).

Apple products are pretty fun and addicting though.

Ohhh no! I do have some backlight bleeding. It isn't too bad, but it's definitely there. Hm... there must be a lot of these going around? Is there even a chance of getting one without the issue? Is it worth exchanging? I just got everything set up on this one!

Photos please.

For some perspective, I have had my iPad 1 for a long time now. I thought it was perfect - love everything about it. Very happy with the product. The other day, I was reading the thread about backlight bleeding, and I went home and looked at mine. Sure enough, there's a small amount on the bottom edge.

I probably to this day wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't been reading that thread. I watch video on my iPad all the time - TV shows and movies (currently catching up on the 1st season of Raising Hope while using my exercise bike - that show is HILARIOUS). It just never was an issue until someone else pointed it out to me.

So, I suggest that unless it is really bad, you use the product for a while, tinker with your brightness settings, and determine if this really is a problem. If so, then exchange, and inspect product carefully in the store before you leave with the new one, to make sure it's acceptable.

My main machine is an early 2009 24 iMac which runs Lion beautifully, but I've had my 13" MBA for 4 days now and while I do love it, I just realized today that everything I've used it for I can just as easily do on an iPad. So it's going back.

The thing about my MBA (1.7 i5 256GB) is that it got almost uncomfortably hot even while watching an HD video and while IMO the fans weren't terribly noisy, the fact that they kept gradually revving up and down made it annoying (I'm cursed with good hearing). Of course my MBA also turned out to have a dead pixel just off centre.

I'm not sure I'm gonna rush out and get an iPad 2. The bleeding and dust issues keep me wondering if it might be better to just wait a little and see if the rumours that a new iPad may come around iOS5 release turn out to be true. I still can't believe that Apple didn't put a sealed display unit in the iPad, just about every mobile device maker's LCD today is sealed for dust.

Exactly! Some of the people on that thread... Do people not just use their iPad?

I haven't read about just what backlight bleeding is and don't specifically look for things like a speck of dust under the screen that you can only see when the display is off under certain lighting conditions or stuck pixels etc. I just use my iPad 2 and enjoy the heck out of it.

Backlight bleeding is a well known issue on the iPad 2, Apple must hold it's profit margins and in order to do so has to cut corners on costs. Therefore a higher grade display is not something that Apple is interested in offering.

I will upload a picture shortly. I am on my iPad and can't figure out how to attach a photo here. Probably it isn't possible or if it is, it is lost on me lol

I can hardly see the bleeding and I watched a move last night and didn't even notice it. I just won't pay it any attention or focus on it. I probably wouldn't have noticed it ever had I not found this forum and read about it.

Now I just need to master typing on the touchscreen keyboard.

As a student with both a MacBook and an iPad there's a few things that I can tell you:

- The best device for writing papers is a notebook. The iPad can do it, but the keyboard and angle gets tiring. A common occurrence for me is starting a paper on my iPad, and after 30 minutes or so, emailing it to myself so I could finish it on my MacBook.

- The music and movie experience is much better on an iPad. I have never enjoyed watching movies on my MacBook since it requires me to change my position to accommodate the device, but with the iPad I can sit, stand, lay or do whatever when I'm watching a movie. The same goes for music... With the iPad you could put a pair of headphones in your ears and forget that it's there. With a MacBook you need to keep the lid open, so you can't really walk around with it. Also, the MacBook Air's speakers aren't good, so listening to music out-loud isn't a solution.

- The multi-tasking on a MacBook is quicker and easier. Doing internet research, while writing a document, while emailing a professor is a breeze on the MacBook, but very frustrating on the iPad. Expose, full screen apps, and spaces are what make this possible, which are things that you don't get with the iPad.

- The iPad is more fun. When I only have one task to accomplish, I usually go to my iPad first. Scrolling through web-pages with your fingers is addicting (seriously), and the app store on the iPad is finally maturing, so the apps are innovative, and just plain awesome.

- There are still limitations of the iPad. Flash is the obvious one, but it has gotten much better over the past year with more and more websites utilizing HTML 5. However, one complaint that I have with the iPad is not being able to upload files into my school's dropbox through safari. This requires me to email documents to myself, sign onto my MacBook, and submit it from there.

So to make a long story short, the MacBook Air will serve you better for writing papers, doing research, and multi-tasking, and the iPad is the best choice for watching movies, listening to music, casual web-browsing, and enjoying apps. Now, the choice is up to you.

Edit: just realized you already chose the iPad. Congrats! Maybe someone else can use my advice. ;)

You ever try using a Bluetooth keyboard?

I appreciate the advice! I actually pasted it to my coworker who is torn between getting an iPad or a laptop! So, your advice definitely is being used :) so thanks! :p
