Onlive desktop has full Microsoft word support all for free. Save files in the cloud as well. Just email it to yourself when your done and that's a quick tool. I love onlive desktop...

Edit - it runs Microsoft win server 08 I believe... Looks just like vista/7. Try it out. It's really cool and free

iPad would have been useless for me. I needed Matlab, Labview, compilers and, frankly speaking, a mouse to navigate large amounts of spreadsheet data. In the workplace, I have my own iPad stories like whtrbt7's, but bottom line everything described in his post concerns basic office document creation and review, which is something the iPad does well if you give it a keyboard. Depending on your degree program this may or may not be an issue for you. For me, I needed a laptop.

I do think of my iPad as an accessory to the laptop. I suppose it's a replacement if you mostly consume content, or mostly create office document or photographic/musical content.
