lol op. last time i checked wifi doesnt equal 3g. for all apple cares Verizon can sell the iphone contractless in their store too. that doesnt mean it will work on their network.

Hahaha, you act like Verizon called up their local wholesaler and bought a few cases of iPads to sell in their stores. This means that Verizon and Apple actually sat down and worked out a business relationship. Verizon has a special data plan just for the iPad, something they've never done before. Something Apple talked AT&T into doing...and now they've talked Verizon into doing.

Plus they're not going through all this trouble just to sell a few MiFi devices without a contract.

Eggh, I would have liked an iPad on Verizons 3G network but 1GB isn't going to cut it. Maybe with a phone, but an iPad? Anyone know what the fee for an extra GB will be? Hopefully not another $20. I thought them expanding would increase competition, bringing costs down or services up.

Edit: Just checked the prices, $20 for an extra GB. Wow. $35 for 3GB is a better deal but I don't want 3GB's. And the MiFi device only holds a three to four hour battery, how lame.

Anybody else agree? AT&T's actions at the latest iPhone 4 launch was writing on the wall for me that exclusivity was soon to be broken and this pretty much confirms it for me.

Why else would VZW be selling a WiFi only device if there wasn't a plan for that to lead into a wireless service being sold on an Apple device? My opinion is that this is just Apple slowly warming up the oven to stick a bunch of iPhones in it.

Your thoughts?

There will be no, I repeat, no CDMA iPhone.

Verizon lost its chance a long time ago...

The funny thing is once the iPhone comes out for VWZ, people are going to be saying VWZ sucks and ATT is better.

Ive had TMO/VWZ/TMO/ATT in that order, and they are all pretty much the same. Some are slightly better than others, but in the big picture its all the same.

Light at the end of the tunnel! I so look forward to the day I can give AT&T the middle finger and sign up with a carrier that actually works!

yea, so that's why Apple is partnering up with Verizon for this iPad deal. Because Verizon wants to be so nice to Apple and not expect anything in return.

Just the fact that the Verizon iPad won't have a CDMA chip undoubtedly shows that there won't be a CDMA iPhone. It also gives a bad chance of one at all in the next year. I don't think they will deploy one until LTE is off and running.

It does make you wonder seeing how the cellular part is on a modular board, it wouldn't be hard at all to to have a different CDMA board designed to plug right in place of the GSM/HSDPA one.

I happen to know there will be a Verizon iPhone. I don't know for sure on which network. So you may be right on your first point but you're dead wrong on the second.

it's not a true "partnership"...and Verizon will make money on the iPads they sell

Verizon is not going to be making a lot of money off of this. You're forgetting that for this iPad deal, they are selling you a no contract $20/month plan which is significantly cheaper than the $50 or $60/month they were normally charging for the Mifi monthly service. Certainly sounds like a concession that Verizon is making to Apple, most likely because they are getting something in return (and we all know how much Verizon doesn't like giving up control to others). The profit on the iPad itself is going to be minimal, as far as I can tell, they aren't exactly going to be flying off the shelves. Also, unlike Best Buy, Verizon is not a store for retail products like iPods and computers, they are primarily interested in selling plans. So Verizon selling the iPad for a profit just on the product itself is an incorrect assessment.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it's not a true partnership". It was a joint Apple/Verizon press announcement so that sounds like a partnership to me. Let's face it, the iPhone is most certainly coming to Verizon, it's just a matter of whether they release it in January or June/July.

Why do people want a CDMA iPhone? Do you not want to have sim cards anymore?

I see you're from Canada. In America, the only reliable wireless carriers are Verizon and Sprint and both are CDMA only. Therefore, we want a CDMA iPhone.

You know, again, I reluctantly enter into this holy crusade that pits AT&T against Verizon.
SO much of what constitutes 'reliability' depends entirely upon where you are. My AT&T service IN MY LOCALE works fine. I have many friends who have Verizon and they complain about the same thing that AT&T critics complain about- dropped calls.
Personally, I don't give a hoot whether there is a Verizon iPhone. For those of you who want it, I hope you get it.
But I am no fan of ANY cell phone company. They are all in it to make money, and often what that means is that they will do as little as possible as cheaply as possible. And if you have illusions about any one of them being noble, or honorable or the 'good guys', or even universally reliable in the cell phone wars, you're smoking something...

I agree. It's beyond me why people choose a device over carrier reliability in their particular locale.

Why would you choose a carrier that has a phone that you want when the carrier has bad reliability in your locale?

If Att wasn't reliable in my locale I wouldn't be an Att customer just because I want the iPhone.

Seriously I just don't get it. I'm sure Verizon as an example has devices that are inline with the iPhone.

That's about the most retarded baseless statement I've ever seen.

So I guess Walmart selling the iPad must mean something too? they are just trying to pull people away from AT&T and put them on Verizon. Sprint tried the same thing.
