With the new photos of the iPad3 exterior case and from rumors, it seems the iPad3 will likely fit most iPad2 protective cases (covers).

Does this seem plausible?

Well, if it's 100% same, then it should work. But, if it's slightly thicker, then some of the cases, like the ZUM Back cover, could not work.

Wait for the official release of the iPad 3, or iPad 2S. If Tim Cook (or whoever it's going to be) says that there are absolutely no external&cosmetic changes, then it will work.

As far as the ZUM back cover goes, this is what was told to me by the U.S. rep for ZUM in Hong Kong. They were going to replace my pink cover free of charge due to cracking in the corners. However, they are no longer manufacturing the iPad 2 covers, they are "preparing for iPad 3", and they only have frost or smoke black iPad 2 covers left.

I can only assume that means there may be a slight difference in size of the back. It is rumored that the original Apple Smart Cover will fit the ipad 3.

Thanks guys. I ask because I bought a fairly expensive cover made for iPad2 in anticipation it would work for iPad3. It wasn't a hard case form fitting type, but more of a flexible slip-over type cover.

Took a risk but we'll have to see. So far looks positive. Looks like the external ports/camera access will be the same.

I thought I read that the camera position had changed slightly (based on an analysis of a rumored iPad3 shell part.). but if your case covers that then no problem. I bought a W/F sleeve for my iPad2 and as far as I can determine as long as the width and height are the same a slight difference in thickness will not be a problem.
Here is a link toshow what I am talking about..

The Smart covers will fit on both the 2 and the 3.

There is a "compatibility" chart on the smart cover sales pages in the store.

From the looks I really hope my Vaja Libretto will fit. If so I will gladly pay the "upgrade" price for the iPad itself.

Think I would have problems with the Yoobao executive leather case for the iPad 2 fitting the iPad 3? Trying to get all my accessories to be here when my new iPad gets here. Don't really want to wait for "official" iPad 3 case if the current version 3 will work just fine.

I'm banking on it not mattering much. I just ordered the Yoobao folio case I mentioned above off of Amazon for 25 bucks shipped. Great price and 30 day return policy if it doesn't fit. I don't want a naked iPad when I get it though.

We are talking a few millimeters thicker, right? Shouldn't be a problem then? I hope..

It's so easy to get the dimensions of the new iPad instead of guessing, right?

The new iPad is 0.6 mm thicker or .02 inches. With the possible exception of the hard, plastic snap on cases and skins, every iPad2 case will fit.

Strong suspicion some older Incipio cases fit (like the NGP). The specs are identical on the website.

All of the tight snap on backs such as the Zum Ultimate or the Speck Smartshell will not fit the new iPad.

This is not true. I literally just bought an incase magnetic snap cover for iPad 2 and it fits perfectly! I bought it hoping it would fit, knowing I could easily return it if it didn't and it does. Even the camera hole is the right size.

The Speck Fit Folio Does not fit.
