Are you kidding me??!?!?!

Manhattan's streets are choke full of electronics shops like what the OP described.

You can find them in mid town and downtown Manhattan -- they are literally everywhere.

Yes, they are there, and the post you are quoting isn't denying that they exist. It's just saying that stores like that aren't real "retailers," they are "tourist rip off places."

If you're in N.Y.C, try entering any small shop that says "electronics". You're guaranteed to get ripped of on any iPad2 deal. One shop (close to the Public Library) was giving me a $100 discount on the 32GB version assuming I went there 5 days later to pick it up (wtf?) I am not sure what the guy was on but I left.
I'm back in my homecountry now (Sweden), and the hunt goes on. :(

some are just NYC scalpers ...

But no one with any sense shops there. They make their living by ripping off tourists in really unsavory ways. Hence the question of why on earth anyone would go in.

Just a little update: went to the Soho store at 9 a.m. in hopes of getting an AT&T 32GB. Walked away empty handed but there was zero line and they had about 20 behind the counter - both WiFi only and Verizon models.

The OP was a tourist hence the reason he went in there.

on the recommendation of this thread I called Mike's Tech Shop

Mike's Tech Shop put me on the reserve list for 16g and 32g black iPads; the fellow was up front that they usually get the larger capacity but was kind enough to do this.

He said that the shop might get more in tomorrow, but those will be alotted to folks who were already on the reserve list. If there was an extra one, he'd contact me. He said they generally have about a week turnaround time per customer. Very, very pleasant.

Even answered my question about anti-glare film for iMacs (didn't like any of them including those I've already tried).

So I'll most likely cancel my online order at Apple this week. Even if I have to wait another 2-3 weeks, the service at Mikes was amazing.

Thanks to those of you who mentioned this place. I now know where I'll be going for my Mac needs. :)

Quick update on this. I swung by there at about 1:30. No line, and Verizon models in stock -- no WiFi, though, so it looks like I'm going back tomorrow.

You might also want to check Tekserve (23rd and 6th) if you're looking for a 16GB black wifi. I picked one up from there yesterday evening and they had about 20 left in stock.

I had luck with the target tracker posted in another thread. I found 64 GB ATT listed as available at the Brooklyn Target on Flatbush Ave. got there at 9:30 (open at 9) and they had a bunch.

craig's

it makes me laugh how some pipl get upset about scalpers ... wall st does it every day :)

anywho, i've seen some decent deals on craig's list. $50 over retail is not the end of the world, if you _must_ have it today

thanks

Thanks hsnifferstein. :) I may swing by Tek Serve tomorrow a.m..

Update on Apple Soho: I called just before 5:00 p.m. > no more iPad 2 of any kind. Very rude too.

Apple have learnt plenty from previouse releases they make this hype machine for publicity. Do you realy think when apple announced the ipad they didnt know how much stock they would have on the release date? really? If they had released it a week later they would have had more stock, 2 weeks later even more stock it wouldnt have been classed as a delayed release considering until they announced it no one knew when it was going to be released.

Last year, it took 28 days to sell 1 million. So, I think apple had 2 million for launch and thought it will last one month. They may had 4 million for international launch and may took some of that to address our demand. Apple may not have seen that the demand multiplied by 10 times or so.
