The latest iPadOS 16 beta released earlier this week expands a Display Zoom option for more screen space to 2018 and 2020 models of the 11-inch iPad Pro with A12X and A12Z chips. The feature was previously limited to iPad models with the M1 chip.

The feature can be enabled in the Settings app by tapping Display & Brightness → Display Zoom → More Space. Apple says this mode gives users more screen space to work with by scaling the display's resolution, which can be useful for features like Split View and Stage Manager. Apple announced earlier this week that Stage Manager is expanding to 2018 and newer iPad Pro models, albeit without external display support.

For the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the More Space option is still limited to the model with the M1 chip, according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith.

iPadOS 16 remains in beta testing and will be released as iPadOS 16.1 in October.

All of a sudden a lot of things are possible. It is almost like it is the Apple we knew before they only cared about money and revenue. Oh wait...
Or that they had an extra month or so to spend on engineering it? They delayed iPadOS 16 and apparently to enable things like this. Or maybe they were destined to be in a .x release later this year or next.

I’m actually loving this even more than stage manager. Was convinced my next iPad would be a 12.9” but now I’m not so sure.

Does zoomed out view affect web content? Specifically websites that aren't responsive design.

It would be helpful to explain what this does and affects, especially since the mockup in both of Apple's options is exactly the same.

It's like on a Mac: you can use the default scaling, or you can make everything smaller so more stuff fits on screen (ie: your screen first more stuff on it, but everything is smaller).

I suppose that means it can be made bigger too, for people that need assistive.

Yay! Am glad to finally have this as an option. I've got everything set super small on my new iPhone 14 Pro Max and then using my 2018 iPad Pro like, seemed just outdated? I don't know. I like a sharper smaller screen, and now this will make me want to use it more, hopefully.

Would be great if we could utilize all that space to add more icons to each Home Screen..

The one nice thing about zoomed-in, and the only useful thing I’ve found about Stage Manager thus far, is that I can stack two windows perfectly on top of one another in portrait mode. No more long skinny windows!

I can get 4 skinny windows in landscape with zoomed SM. I just haven’t found a good workflow with SM yet. My biggest problem is how minimizing a window doesn’t function like I would expect it to—when I go to the dock and reopen the minimized app, it gets thrown into another space. So instead, I have to drag the app up and reposition windows all over again. Seems more time consuming than it is worth.

Hopefully this comes to the 4th gen air too, the 10.9" screen isnt exactly much different from 11" pro :)
The A14 has a four-core GPU and six-core CPU.
The A12x has a seven-core GPU and an eight-core CPU.

While the A14 is faster in single core, that GPU count is noticeably smaller.

The Air has mostly used the phone SOC while the iPPs have used a beefier SOC. It wasn’t until the most recent Airs got the M1 that they came close to parity.
