Why was this even limited to M1 in the first place? Lmao.
Gotta have something to force folks to upgrade. Its the same thing they do with the iPhone each year. Each year there is at least one or two (if not a couple more) features in the new version of iOS that you won't get unless you're on the latest and greatest hardware.

So happy about this! I was contemplating getting rid of my 2018 Pro 11” for an Air, and it just brought the two features I wanted. The change to the UI I noticed yesterday…did’t say anything, just assumjed that was part of the Stage manager featres.

So is the A14 iPad Air 4 once again too “underpowered” to support a simple display zoom feature just like it was underpowered for Stage manager?

It would be really getting ridiculous at this point if they leave this feature out for the Airs.

Looking forward to this. Glad they are continuing to listen to feedback from customers!

Much prefer the zoomed out approach as it makes the interface feel less cartoon. I do wish they gave you as many zoom levels as some Android deployments, but this is still a step forward

Another nice aspect of zoomed out—in regular side-by-side with both windows 50:50 split, I am able to open apps with their full-screen elements (instead of the usual compact iphone-like interface).

It makes no sense why 11” iPads and all M1 iPads are compatible with the More Space Display Zoom option but not 3rd and 4th gen 12.9” iPad Pros

The 12.9" models have more pixels to push around, and unfortunately the pre-M1 chips just can't quite handle it. I have no doubt Apple tried their best, but they will always put a world class user experience ahead of glitchy features that don't work as smooth as they should.

The A12X/A12Z chips were faster than most Windows PCs in its generation and the Windows PCs had now problem with it

Yeah, there must be millions of people refusing to upgrade until that feature came out.

Do you have an official source for this reason, or are you just referencing the developer in this article who himself admits that he’s just guessing the non M1s can’t handle the extra pixels?

Not trying to be obstinate, I’m just hoping this feature might suddenly become available in a future beta.

The A14 has a four-core GPU and six-core CPU.
The A12x has a seven-core GPU and an eight-core CPU.

While the A14 is faster in single core, that GPU count is noticeably smaller.

The Air has mostly used the phone SOC while the iPPs have used a beefier SOC. It wasn’t until the most recent Airs got the M1 that they come close to parity.
An 8 year old intel integrated GPU can run a scaled 4k display, and the 2020 iPad Air manages to render advanced games rather well. The screen has a res of 1536x2048, if the A14 GPU cores can't run a scaled resolution on standard app rendering there's something wrong.

Wishing that iOS 16 had more than two options but rather have four to choose from that way you could have large icons but still see the contact photos in iMessage.

My M1 iPad Pro is looking forward to iPad OS 16.1. I’ll be giving this feature a go.

Except iPadOS 16 isn’t even publicly released yet. If they wanted people to upgrade to get this feature wouldn’t they have at least waited until a few versions after the GM release to add it in?

Because they have to have the feature working on something first so it can go out to beta testers and there is less optimization they need to do with a beefier chip. Same story with iPhone. The early iOS betas always optimize for newer models with older models suffering a lot of crashes and overheating which would improve with subsequent betas.

Given the trajectory of these threads it’s just a matter of time before someone complains that they’re deprived of this feature on their 2012 Retina iPad.

Wait for it.
