can you? AFAIK Macbook airs start at £999. My iPad Air was £650. Already had a keyboard and trackpad.
Of course. MacRumors is regularly posting about $599 MacBook Air sales. Apple also working on getting to this price point.

Slide over and two apps side by side needs to come back to full screen mode. The overlapping windows are stupid on the iPad mini. It just doesn’t work.

You don't have to overlap windows.
True, but it's much less user friendly than the old mechanic was and on the tiny screen of the mini it really doesn't work. Coupled with lining up some windows as some apps don't resize well.

And it removes the corner swipe function for notes and screenshots which I used a lot when you turn off fullscreen mode because the window re-sizing overrides it.

If I wanted a MacBook I'd buy one.

what if you tried stage manager? in one view you could have both windows in ‘splitview’ and slideover and just section it out across different views.

However it's better in portrait.

I agree that Apple should have kept it as an option, because the final version of SS was very nice. Have you sent that feedback to Apple?

I don’t think we get these kinds of deals outside the US…
