Even if i really really welcome this news, and i, among with many more, did send feedback about this to Apple, i’m not convinced that Apple will do this implementation the easy way, like in iPadOS 18.

I really hope that i’m wrong, but the way Apple did the Split View in iPadOS 26 compared to iPadOs 18 it’s just so cumbersome, and i’m little skeptical to that Apple did the slide over the easy way.

But i really hoping that i’m wrong.

Glad to see it back. Don't like features to be removed. I have not yet updated to iPadOS 26. Will do so soon.

Totally disagree! 👎

If someone prefers the windowed mode, I don’t see why anyone else should decide it shouldn’t exist. People have been complaining about this lack for at least 5–10 years, and now that it’s finally here, many are happy with it.
many prefer to install macOS on an iPad device
many prefer to install Android on an iPad device
many prefer to install windows on an iPad device

doesn't mean that feature should exist.

Does anyone know whether this is a feature that can be disabled? The inability to have Split View without Slide Over is what killed my use of multitasking on the iPad.

I’m more than a little annoyed when Apple removes software features. Even though I detest Slide Over, I’m more than happy for it to exist! As long as I never have to use it and definitely cannot trigger it accidentally… 🤬

You'd have to hold the green button to arrange windows followed by pressing the text for slide over. I don't think you'd accidentally enable slide over.

Let's just give everybody what they all want. Every piece of UI Apple has ever used in their history and even including an option to skin the entire thing to Windows 8 for the one guy who still thinks that was so great. Who needs direction when you don't have to make any decisions?

This, unironically.

nope. MacBook Air 13" just as or is literally more portable compared to a Magic Keyboard + iPad Pro 13". Throw in mobile hotspot, you got cellular connectivity with zero extra $/mo. Makes zero sense for iPad to exist for that workflow.
Yes but the macbook air has a vastly inferior screen to the iPP M4, and cannot be detached. IPP is smooth and snappy like an iPhone, modular, more portable, can do office work/content creation if needed and just more fun to use than a macbook. Macs will always be needed for dev work though.

I am so glad slide over coming back! I use it every day and missed it when it gone. Had to use my iPhone instead as slide over and iPad. Hopefully it works well enough. Wait and see!

It's early days for iPad as a Mac. Since the beta ipad26 is a work in progress. I think apple will continue to refine multitaking options according to user prefernces. It's not until you remove or scale something that you learn what users like or dislike.

It's clear that Apple is reading comments and threads on reddit and mcrumors. The response to os26 is being actioned by apple :)

Parent or grandparent? Slide Over is the ultimate power-user feature for people using iPads correctly – IYKYK.
then someone’s kid. Apparently it wasn’t a dev, unless Apple removes features they themselves like.

Turn it off and lose all multitasking isn't a solution. The three options should be split screen, windowed, and stage manager for multitasking.
I agree, Apple did such a good job of refining Split-screen into its final-boss version that it’s a shame to see it go. Instead of four MT options, turning it off could be full screen apps.

Can someone explain to me what is so cumbersome about flicking an app to the left and another to the right. How did Apple make splitscreen worse its even easier to discover imo. Im not trying to argue I am genuinely curious.

The old way was press the 3 dots, then enable split mode then choose the second app. Then youd have to manually flip it around if you wanted the order different.

The new way: flick whatever app to whatever side you want

-OR-

Press and hold the three dots, and choose what side you want it on right away.
------------------

iOS 26 still has split mode, its just better and more gesture based. But you still have the old way if you want to do so.

In iPadOs 18 you only opened an app, pressed three dots in the top of the app/screen and tapped Split View, then selected a new app and you were done. It took like 2-3 seconds for a Split View.

In iPadOs 26 you can do a split views in 2 ways.
1
Open a app, swipe from the top to bring down a meny. Then you tap and hold for a second on the ”traffic lights” to bring up a meny with lots of choices.
After that you tap again where you want your app, for example to the left.
Now you open a new app, and the new app takes up the whole screen and you can’t see the other app.
So you have to to swipe down from the top again and tap and hold the ”traffic lights” for a second and then choose for example right.
Now you are done.
This takes twice as long time compared to the way in 18.

Also when you want to exit Split View you just can’t swipe/drag the middle column to one or the other side to close, like in 18, you have to tap the ”traffic light” in one app for a second and select the green, for maximizing the app, and then you can swipe from the bottom to the top to exit.
This is so freaking stupid!

You can of course when you are in an app, move the window from the bottom right corner and try to align it to the left.
But when you do that the app goes in to the middle, and you have to manually drag the window to the left or right.
And then you open a new app and the app fills the whole screen once more, and you have to manually move it to the right, because the app goes in to the middle.

And you can of course not move the app from the point you move the window, the right bottom side of the app.
You have to drag the app to the either side from the top.
I hope you understand what i mean.
All of this is so cumbersome!!
